I made... something.

Got a bunch more work done on this one. I ground the bevels in, didn't like how they came out so I re-forged them a little bit. Cleaned up and flattened the handle. Then did an edge quench and temper. According to the heat treat specs for O2, the edge should be around 60 HRC right now, but I have no way to check for sure. I'm going to finish grinding the bevels and put an edge on it, and test it out to make sure it won't chip out before I put the handle slabs on.

Check out that tapered tang

Im liking that shape man! Edge quench meaning you heated the whole thing to non magnetic then quenched the edge only letting the spine air cool down to spring temper? I see the end of the tang is yellow like it was torch tempered from the spine?
Just curious how you tempered it? Looks great man!

You got it on the first part. Heated to nonmagnetic and then a little soak at temp to make sure its heated through, then dunked edge down into a trough with a couple inches on oil in it. I held it in the oil for a good while with the edge down just to make sure. On the blade the lowest line on the forge scale is the quench line, the others are from splashes.

The end of the tang was stickin' out of the forge so it didn't get heated much.

That makes perfect sense. Thanks philllll! was wondering why the tang didnt fit the process. Thats gonna be a purdy handle:thumbup:

Well I had a little forge time last night and made another one to add to the "forged out, still needs to be finished" pile.

This time I tried my hand at a 'hawk inspired by JW's headhunters. Started as a piece of 5160 leaf spring.

Hmmm, Philllll is getting gooder and gooder. Who else thinks his skills are becoming slowly but surely a threat to HI and that a moderator should label this as advertising :D?

Kidding, I just feel that this last project was harder to do and quite surprised you took such a big jump, a testament to your skills getting better - am I right, or...far from it?

Thanks, Moon.

I haven't finished the last one yet. I put a rough grind on it to test the edge retention but haven't done anything else yet. Here is a shot of it next to the 'hawk. I still need to slim down the 'hawk handle a bunch and chop an inch or so off the end. I trying to decide if I should round the pommel or make it pointy.

For this I think rounded pommel. Just my opinion. I have a tendency with a wrapped cord grip to scratch myself with a pointy pommel where with a full rounded grip I never seem to have that problem. strange but there it is LOL. Looks great, very inspired!

Yeah I am leaning towards rounded, gotta go look at the pics of Jim's headhunters again for more inspiration!

I've had a hankering for one of JW's hawks since I seen one for the first time. Someday it'll happen. Definitely on the list.

Looking great philllll! Yeah im with the rounded haft. I wonder if you could pound it out kind of "I" beam shaped like some of the Estwing tools and leave it raw with scales in the middle and ground clean around the outside. Might look pretty cool. Just an ideer? Awesome job again!

These will look so nice once fitted and finished, do keep us posted.

(I heard Ndoghouse is working on some guillotine, to cut the bilton in convenient bite-sized pieces - I'm following both your progress. Not sure if he has a name yet for it? But it will be brutal, if past is of any indication in those regards.)
