I made... something.

I love the look. Does it feel cumbersome with the handle above the bulk of the blade like that.

The downswept handle probably helps alleviate that a bunch though.

Joe- it is front-heavy for sure.

Here is a disassembled shot. During testing I found the edge to be a little chippy, so it is going back in the oven for another tempering before final assembly.

Another good looking rugged slab :) I do like your style evolution. You seem to be really having a lot of fun with them.

Great work, thank you for sharing

Here's a fun little project I started yesterday. The knife is made of a small cutoff from a san mai billet with cable damascus over 1080/1084 railroad track steel, made by my friend Zack. I still need to heat treat it and put an edge on. This one won't be getting any handle slabs since I want to show off the billet.

I used Zack's new hydraulic press to draw the steel out and a hammer to forge in the bevels and some distal taper. The handle shape is pretty much how it came off the press, but it turned out to fit my hand well. Total time between forging and initial grinding was probably 3-4 hours.

Interesting. Was wondering about that handle shape. How thick is the spine and how's the edge?

It's about 3/16" thick at the handle. The edge is convex ground and around 1/32"-1/16" thick at this point. The knife is around 9" overall.

Here is a photo in hand:

Thank you for the additional picture. It helps give a better/different perspective.

Phil,

Would tying some jutes around the DamaBaddy help a bit with the grip?

That O1 is a holy smokey MamaJama!

Hmm, I think in my mind I see that latest one as being kind of uncomfortable to grip. Also, I think I personally would polish it up a bit more on the blade, go for a very smooth blade so that the etch will show of very subtly but still obvious in a shiny polish. Almost the opposite of the way I love the rest of your other blades. LOL!

I am still on the fence about wrapping the handle. It is pretty comfortable as-is, but a little more grip wouldn't hurt either.

I will be polishing it up a lot more for sure, after I heat treat it and finish the grind. Also a dark acid etch. Right now it's just got a couple-hour vinegar etch that I did to check how it would look. The railroad steel center part got darker than the cable on the sides so I should end up with some good contrast.

Awesome, I can't wait to see it all finished out. I bet it is going to be gorgeous!
