I need another Mnandi thread to read.

Love the Mnandi!! I find it to be a perfect compliment to my self-defense blades. I use the Mnandi for all the everyday tasks and when the Zombies attack....well, I've got that covered too!!

Wow, that IS very similar to mine!
Can't wait to see your pics. Those lighter colors will pop under the correct lighting or outdoors.

Your post is reminding me that I'm so eager to watch season 4 of The Walking Dead. :D

I'm also relatively new to collecting, and to this forum. I only have four Mnandi's so far, but adding to those as fast as I can!
My question has to do with how much of a no-no it is to replace or change the scales on these knives. I can see where that wouldn't be too good on one of the high $ ones, but do you ruin the value on a more average knife that just has so-so scales?
I have made many knife and gun grip scales, and as an amateur guitar maker, I have all kinds of beautiful exotic woods in my shop.
So, is this considered ok, or does the value drop tremendously when the scale doesn't match the birth card?

My thoughts:
The value to a collector would drop, plus the warranty would drop.
The value to you as the owner may increase.

That's sort of how I felt about it. One approach that I feel comfortable with, though, is to replace an average piece of wood with a spectacular one of the same wood species. Maybe I couldn't represent it as original, but at least the birth card would match!

Pretty similar story, have a bunch of sebenzas and other CRK's and often carry a small classic, but in a suit I needed something lighter. I have a mammoth ivory Mnandi in the original style I love but cannot bring myself to carry so I too bought a cocobolo new version for carry and love it.

DucS2R, I get that.
I'm sure enjoying how the Cocobolo is staying like new with nice lustre....must be those natural oils in the wood.

No big story here ..... I just like them. I bought my first CRK (a large Sebenza CGG) on 5/5/12. My first Mnandi followed on 5/15/15 .... an Ebony with Ladder Damascus. I told myself, this is nice. Very useful for a small blade and fits my hand like a glove (for a small knife). I then told myself that I wanted only one more Mnandi ... an Ivory to go with the Ebony. Well, just so happens that the initiator of this thread was kind enough to sell me her Ivory with Vines and Roses Damascus Mnandi two months later, in July. That was the turning point in my love of the Mnandi!! From that point, wanted to have one of every inlay that spoke to me. There's just something about the Mnandi that is different from most other knives in this particular size. I have a number of similarly sized folders, but none feel as good in my hand as the Mnandi .... NOR are they as good looking!!! Going back to my previous post above ..... well, yes ... Lisa gave me the nudge I needed with that picture of her Cocobolo. Just ordered the one I had been looking at for the longest time:

Very nice! I know exactly where you purchased that one I almost bought it! Haha!! I throw some pics up my cocobolo :)

You guys are killing me with this thread!

I had a SUPER NICE Mnandi, a stark white Mammoth Ivory with Ladder Damascus, it was my dress knife, or wedding knife as I referred to it (I even wore it to my wedding believing that I'd never sell it) but I found it just too nice to use so it sat in the box waiting for special occasions. That just didn't work for me so I ended up selling it believing that I'd get one that was a little more of an everyday capable user and not a show piece, I've yet to replace it but after reading this post ill be on the lookout for an African Blackwood( if they made it ) or Ebony Mnandi again- maybe with some nice Damascus.

If anybody has an old style pivot that is like I'm looking for and is interested in a StarTac, small tanto 21, or a 25 I'd sure like to hear from you ;D

1AbominAble1, part of the fun will be trying to track down that next special one.

I'm also one who typically has at least two EDC blades -- the pair is usually an Mnandi and a large Sebenza. The Seb handles all the heavy duty work, but for really fine, detailed cutting, digging out a sliver, removing office staples, etc,, the Mnandi is really handy. Here's a couple old images that folks are probably getting tired of seeing:

Thank you Fooj for adding to the thread. I doubt I'll ever tire of seeing those beauties!

I do have one complaint.

The mnandi is very thin so it often slips out of its leather pouch.

a few times I found it outside the pouch inside my slacks pocket.

I couldn't agree more Lisa.
I also enjoy "stalking" the postman while waiting for my knife to arrive- he's grown used to me, I think if I order anymore knives we'll have an old school Pink Panther thing going where we try to scare each other ;)

Keep using that leather pouch, placing the the knife in the same way each time. If you look at my EDC photo a couple posts back, you'll see how the pouch eventually takes on the shape of the knife, like conformally coated plastic on plier grips. When it gets "broken in" in this fashion, the pouch holds the Mnandi quite securely. If you then squeeze the edges of the pouch like you would one of those old-style oval coin carriers, the Mnandi is released.
