Is it done yet?.....

No. I'm waiting on a order for some rods to re-pin the blade and bushing. I've got the right side inlay sanded and shaped but I'm in wait mode. Also trying to get Pete to sell me a new spring holder. I think Joe will need to OK this. In any case, I think it'll be mid-week before my rods get here (nobody in town had what I needed).

I really appreciate all the positive comments and helpful pointers. Thanks guys. I'm having a blast tinkering around with these two knives. I didn't mean to get into a barehead on the second knife but it is looking very interesting. The picture just doesn't pick up the green micarta color well. I think its going to be awsome with a final polish.

I'm trying to get that final finish on the micarta. Here's what I did: 220,320,400,0000wool,1500 sanding along the lenth of the scale.

Its canvas micarta and maybe thats how its supposed to looks. Any suggestions or tricks I should try?

Does it feel smooth? The canvas is softer and I am sure you can feel a texture. I like the way it looks.

I typically stop sanding at about 600-800 grit on Canvas Micarta. It seems plenty smooth to me and still has some grip. I don't know if you can get a real gloss going with the canvas, the fibers will keep coming up. The paper and linen Micarta polish up more but have less grip.

I think your scales are looking great, nice work.

YEP 'dey used not only walnut - they used maple burl, iron wood, oak, and a few other woods.. i heard that they experimented with other woods reacently

i had Arksknives put some 200+ year old chestnut on a knife for me were i was chicken to try it my self..

gee looks like some one has a new hobby tinkering with sharp things...:D welcome to the asylum!;)

What a fine hobby it is ;)

Can't wait to buy a home and setup a workshop...

Well I'm finished with the scale on the Barehead project. It turned out to be a really good tutorial for myself on a number of do's and don'ts. On the finishing of the canvas micarta, a 600 grit sanding and a little buffing time was sufficeint for the results shown. This picture is finally showing the color correctly.

I am disappointed that I flubbed the back pin placement on the left side (pictured on right). It’s a little low. I won’t go into detail but let’s say I was learning what my sequence of steps should be and I got ahead of myself on the pin drilling.

Thanks again all for your great suggestions and nice comments. I suppose I won’t post anymore pictures until I get her back together.

I would love for someone with experience putting a knife back together to coach me on proper steps. I’m fearful of having to pop it apart again if I do something wrong.

That's looking great! Did you find a replacement spacer? How about making your own out of the same Micarta, if you have any left. Didn't Buck do that on some of the 110's?

The green micarta looks great and I love the look of those pins. I don't notice any problem with the back pin placement....

Neither did I. Those knives turned out fantastic, Flatlander! I particularly like the combination of the green micarta and the brass. Great choice!

I think you guys are looking at the two 1/8th bolster/springholder pins. Those are OK. What I should have said is the 3/16th pin. The one in question is on the left side scale with I have pictured on the right. Its the last one (top to bottom). In guess I should call them inlay pins. It should be centered left to right (like the other one) but looks about 1/16 left of center. What did the old Carpenter say "measure twice cut once":o:o:o

I got my brass rods today. But the real good news is that Joe Houser has decided to send me a new springholder.:thumbup::thumbup: That is an extremely generous thing for them to agree too. Just another example of how Buck Inc. has the best customer service in the Knife World. You can surely count me as a delighted customer!!

I'll finish up when the springholder gets here.
