I want a Salvati hammer!

There's an incredible blacksmithing talent in our midst, and I want to take advantage of his skills and get some tools made. My only problem is he's currently working and living a couple hundred miles from his shop, and as a result I can't justify getting him to make a special trip for my needs.

Sam Salvati makes one of the best damn hammers I've ever laid eyes on. Working big round stock, he forges out these beautifully tapered gems (and all sorts of other shapes and sizes, too!), slitting the stock with hot chisels and drifting them by hand. I've felt them, and have yet to find one that balances and hits the same way. These are obviously tools made by someone that knows what the final outcome is supposed to be about.

He also makes some kickass tongs. I've been dabbling in making tomahawks, but I'm getting pissed off by not being able to hold stock properly. I want a couple of these made, too...

Anyway, I'm hoping I might be able to spur some interest from others to get him to make a special trip and bust out a bunch so it's worth his while. I haven't even called him to discuss this yet, but I figure if there's just enough response I can apply a good ol' helping of Irish guilt to push him past the reluctance. :D

I need some of this stuff, and I just can't see buying a blacksmithing hammer from anyone other than a blacksmith that makes his products -through blacksmithing!

Any of you guys think you might be interested in this?

dood!

this was super sweet. i really like the touchmark on the hammer too. nice touch. i was watching some of the demo last week thinking how it would be sweet to have one if only i forged.

this just got me thinking though, no reason i can't have one made for other odd hammer jobs.

i'm always reaching for a hammer a in the shop to smack something. sam do you think you could make something a little smaller for general smashing work? like peening pins and stuff?

Nice thread Matt!
Sam is a very talented young smith and his knowledge of tools is unreal.
His hammers are things of beauty and after seeing him make one at my hammer in we discused him making me one and also one for one of my customers....so...I have two on order.:D
Maybe your thread will shed some light on Sammy and others will get on board. This young man REALLY needs to be making tools for us full time...lets see if we can't give him the push that he needs.
GO SAM!!!:D

I know what you are saying. I wanted one also and finally worked out a deal with Sam for one if his hammers. He has it forged but it is sadly residing up at his shop waiting patently to make its way out to my shop. He does nice work but needs to get a shop closer to where he lives:)

You know Matt, its funny u brought this up., I was supposed to get a nice little 2 1/2 LB hammer from Sam at ashokan a few years ago but it just wasn't in the cards for me., after seenig the photos of Mace's hammer in , I just got to thinking about it again. I REALLY want one still! So Sam, think we can get a little somthin goin?

i too want a sam hammer
one of these days i hope to get one (oo and set up a forge and really have a need for that hammer )

I was thinking the same thing !

I'd love a hammer just like the one Sam made at Mace's hammer in !

Josh

I have some of Sams tongs and love them.
I want a hammer also.

How about it Sam, I would commit to a hammer if you want to make a run of them.

Greg

Sam, I'd be interested in one also, and I'll even through in some jerky! I spent yesterday morning at Vern Six's hardly used forge and worked out a nice bowie from some "Sam Salvati mystery metal" from Ashokan. Sam thought it was either 5160 or 1080. It forged well, but my hammer wasn't as nice as the one of Sam's that I borrowed at Ashokan.

I've been on line for one for years. I give him a bar, get a promise and wait a year to find out he gave it to someone else! I've got a 6ft bar of 1045. How many hammer heads will that make? How about I drive it to his house and shackle him to his anvil? I've got some S7 as well. Sam, I'll even bring the coal!

Geesh, free steel and coal delivery (and a smith assistant too probably), buckets of money from numerous customers and lavish amounts of well earned praise. Sam, sounds like a winning combination. Merry Christmas dude!

I haven't replied yet because I'm so embarrassed!

No need to be embarrassed because people want what you're good at, man!

I didn't mean to pressure you, Sam... I guess I just think I know what you should be doing - it's up to you to know what you should be doing.

I need to work some things out in life. I couldn't just make a trip and take 2 weeks to make a run of hammers or i'd lose my apartment, or over the course of a couple weekends I'd end up breaking even with travel costs. For me to be back in my home shop i'd have to quit my job and relocate back home. I'm workin on it!! I'd love to make everyone hammers, and am honored you all want one of mine.

Paul, no problem I could make those skidding tongs If I were in my shop, I could make your Father a pair better than any he could buy in a store.

Mike, I could make any type of hammer you want.

Aldo, the reason you have been waiting is because I don't want to make you a plain hammer, I want to make you a very special hammer, I want to make you a piece of art you could use! I have not had the full time to devote to it, which is why I have not made yours yet. what shape and diameter is the 1045?

Matt, and everyone I can't thank you for your kind interest. I hope to make the move soon.
