There's an incredible blacksmithing talent in our midst, and I want to take advantage of his skills and get some tools made. My only problem is he's currently working and living a couple hundred miles from his shop, and as a result I can't justify getting him to make a special trip for my needs.
Sam Salvati makes one of the best damn hammers I've ever laid eyes on. Working big round stock, he forges out these beautifully tapered gems (and all sorts of other shapes and sizes, too!), slitting the stock with hot chisels and drifting them by hand. I've felt them, and have yet to find one that balances and hits the same way. These are obviously tools made by someone that knows what the final outcome is supposed to be about.
He also makes some kickass tongs. I've been dabbling in making tomahawks, but I'm getting pissed off by not being able to hold stock properly. I want a couple of these made, too...
Anyway, I'm hoping I might be able to spur some interest from others to get him to make a special trip and bust out a bunch so it's worth his while. I haven't even called him to discuss this yet, but I figure if there's just enough response I can apply a good ol' helping of Irish guilt to push him past the reluctance.
I need some of this stuff, and I just can't see buying a blacksmithing hammer from anyone other than a blacksmith that makes his products -through blacksmithing!
Any of you guys think you might be interested in this?
