i went and did a very bad thing...

Bye CF.

We have been putting up with your poor judgement for too long.

Hey everyone look around everything every where is copied in one form or another. I see it traditional archery, guns, and knives. Not to mention clothes, sneakers etc. etc. I mean look at probably the most copied knife pattern in the world. Probably the drop point hunter. Everyone says it is a Loveless design. Well did he invent it? Did he patent it? Don't think so. Everyone here bitches about rip off designs etc. I don't get it. IF the design is protected by a patent/copy right then there could be legal trouble. I see mechanisms that are patented or patent pending but that is the mechanism and not the blade style etc. Least for the most part. I just don't get involved in that argument much anymore. After working at Kodak for 20yrs and seeing a ton of people using Fuji camera's and film, I gave up. Especially after loosing my job. So if someone wants to buy a Chineese knife or what have you good on'em I say. keepem sharp

Longbow, the main issue is that Copyrights are protected by international law. China does not recognize patents from any country, or any property rights, intellectual or otherwise from any country or citizen. Moreover, they havea nasty habit of not just coypying a design, but counterfeiting them entirely, with the original manufacturers name on them and everything. If Time warner can't stop chinese theft, what makes everybody think that Ernie Emerson can?

The only people who will be able to stop the Chinese economic juggernaut is the Chinese themselves, and there's a very good chance they'll do exactly that. I say, in the meantime pick up a few quality knives at a ridiculously low price.

Blackhearted, since you know how to heat treat, I recommend the S+W "Urban Camo" karambit. I was just as impressed as you when I received this $15 knife. It's a framelock with steel handle -- extremely tight and solid. On top of this, the blade is supposedly 440C, like some other Chinese S+W models. You might be able to make this into a first rate folder.

You have obviously been disappointed with some of the $100 or so production knives you have bought, which is why your M-Tech is so amazing to you, though I maintain that whyile the M-Tech may seem well made, the quality of its parts is substandard to say the least...."

I think that depends on the user to decide- I love Opinels, some folks think their cheep crud. The Important thing to note is that the chinese are now making stuff that is GOOD, or atleast AS GOOD as very much more expensive products.
You used to pay for quality, now it seams that your just paying for brand name- quality has very little to do with price in todays "globalised" world.
We can try to maligne chinese manufactures quality all we like, but the simple fact is that every one else produces stuff thats just as bad as their crud and they make stuff thats JUST AS GOOD as our good stuff, only much cheeper.
Theres a similar stink about chinese made 'aeromatic' and 'tauchmeister' watches going on on the watch forums, like chinese knives i've found these watches to be about as good as ones much more expensive. some people hate them because their chinese, but apart from style/taste and maker issues theres not much other then predudice to be said against them
Here in the USA we'd better buck up our ideas about quality and production or we'll end up as the republic of Walmart....
An aunt by marage has spent the last 40 odd years as a teacher in China and she thinks that they ARE the worlds bigest super power, its just the rest of us dont know it yet....

A year ago. Yeah. That's when I bought my $2 tomahawk folder from SMKW. Damm good knife, once I peeled off all of the crappy rubber coating from the handle.

*Sits at his desk eying his sub-10$ opinels and Victorinox knives that readily outcut 100$ production folders*

:D

nozh2002,
Today in Guangzho China, I believe the cost for a Big Mac by itself was 16Yuen, about 2 american dollars. I had a double cheeseburger combo plus an extra D,Cheeseburger for 26 Yuen, medium size. The Chinese I work with here make very good wages for China labor, about 200 American dollars a month. Factory workers make less. It might be a while before I go back to McDonalds, but I will double check the BM cost for you if I go back to McDonalds soon.

Congratulations - you found a new toy for $8 that will give you more fun than other $8 toys.

Shame on you! You let a $8 toy rob you of enjoyment from previous purchases that far exceed $8. It is a virus!!

IMO

The reason your able to buy it so cheap from a Chinese manufacturer is the worker's who made it work in a sweat shop type environment and are paid wages that are so low they would be considered slave labor here.
I'm sure you now realize that the reason they're so cheap coming from there is that if a company tried to pull that off here(in good ol' USA) they would be slapped into last week by the judicial system.

Now, that's not said to insult you, as your free to spend the money you make as you please. Just think that what you paid for that knife is probably the equivalent of a week's wages for the people who put it together.

Have you ever been to a factory in China? Have you ever been to China at all for that matter?

Anyhow, I got a Chinese made little folder as a gift for shopping this online knife seller. It's a lock-back and everything's tight fit. No blade play whatsoever.

Just a few years ago, anything that had the words "Made in China" on it; that was enough for me to put the product back on the shelf. Now it's a bit of a different story..... I recently picked up an L.E.D. pen light from a Chinese company called "River Rock."

I wanted a back-up light to carry with me. I ended up testing it out one night while patrolling the building I work at. Just for fun, I also brought along my Inova X5, and my mini-mag converted with a 3-bulb L.E.D. kit.

That single L.E.D., 2 AAA battery, $10, Made in China, pen light; outperformed both of the other MORE expensive lights! What the Hell?!:grumpy:

My little back-up L.E.D. is now the most powerful one of such lights that I own! Although I'm happy at the bargain I got for $10, I was angry as Hell at the companies that made the 2 other lights. Still can't figure out how an Inova X5 with 5 L.E.D.s and powered by 2 lithium batteries could be outperformed by a single L.E.D. light running off of 2 AAAs! (Possibly the reflector)?

This incident has caused me to start taking a look at possibly adding some Made in China knives to my collection. Why spend a lot of money for quality, if you don't have to?
