Hello,

I have happily purchased many a knife from the forum over the last several years and have been very happy with the results. I recently purchased a knife from what appears to be a well known forumite and this particular transaction has gone south.

This incident started on 2/8 when I purchased and paid for this knife using paypal. My payment posted the same day it was sent on 2/8.

The knife was described as "This knife is new and in close to mint condition, and the edge may have been lightly sharpened. I have stored this knife in my safe with a light coat of oil"

There was a fuzzy picture included and this particular knife has a presentation box with the label and model on a metal plaque on the outside top of the box. The picture depicted knife sitting on top of the box with the plaque obscured by the knife.

Everything has always gone well, the seller has been around forever so I bought the knife.

When I recieved the knife the first thing I noticed was that the presentation box was poorly covered with a coat of shellac. The shellac was covering the plaque.

Then upon opening the box and removing the knife for inspection I found the blade of the knife has sharpening marks across the face of the blade.

So I reply to the seller:

"It would have been nice to know that the knife box had a bad shellac job
where they even lacquered the label on the box; but that was craftily
covered by your display photo. When someone says "the edge may have been lightly sharpened" I would take that to mean there are no sharpening
scratches across the face of the blade as the knife you sold me has."

O.K. so I was to blunt or maybe I'm an a**hole.

Then the seller replies:

I have refunded your money in full. You can choose either
to Send me the knife back to
XXXXX
or
paypal me what you feel the knife is worth.

So the seller attempts to refund my payment on 2/17. It does not post until 2/23.

During this time frame the seller then demands that I return the knife at my expense.

I state I will return the knife and let him know when I do; but my work schedule prevents me from doing this before the end of the week.

During and since this time frame I have recieved emails containing profanity and most recently threats.

Alright so here it is on the forums. Go ahead and let me have it or tell me what you think.

IMHO, you both seem a little bit rough around the edges in trading etiquette.

You got a refund. I say return the knife at your expense and forget about it. It's pretty common to have to eat the shipping on any kind of return.

I know you're mad, but if you blow this any further out of proportion you'll probably end up regretting it and look like an a55 on the forum. Again, IMHO. ;)

He is probably upset that you inferred that he was being dishonest by covering up the box with the knife. After something like that he most likely doesn't feel like taking the full hit for shipping in both directions.

I must ask, were there any other communications between the two of you that would have caused the other person in this deal to send you nasty emails? Just asking, because I know who that other person is and find it hard to believe that he just started sending you such emails for no reason.

I think if you weren't happy with the knife you just could have sent it back without insulting the man's integrity. If you honestly believe it was done on purpose, you never had to deal with him again.I would have allowed him to correct the problem before launching insults. As far as the profanity,I would have to know what went on in the exchanges leading up to the e-mail.I'm not sticking up for sending nasty e-mails,but I would have been upset to be accused of being underhanded in a deal.I mean this forum member is well known and respected.A simple e-mail asking for a refund would have sufficed, and this wouldn't be here right now.I wish you both the best of luck in resolving the issue.

Why didn't you just politely write him back and tell him that the knife is not what you expected and you would like to return it?

Most reputable people at BF would gladly refund your money and it sounds like this person had no problem in offering to refund your purchase price.

Your initial response to him was out of line, imo.

M1, you crazy bastid! :p :D
My response here would be far and away better suited elsewhere. I am just sitting back, hoping to learn the ins and outs of succesful online trading. ;)

Time to refill the popcorn... And I think KV drinks orange soda ;) :D

I would have to agree with settling this in private. But as they say... "The truth has 3 sides. His, His and the truth"

Yes I have every intention of returning the knife, always did, which will be this coming week.

Amazingly, I believe I did business with this person a couple years ago and all went well.

i have had two deals with this member; on both occasions they went out of their way to make our transactions smooth and easy, despite my repeated fumblings of our second deal! this shows me that this member is patient, and courteous.

i'm sure the problems stems from the accusation in question: "craftily covered"... that kinda bungled the deal, i think. i say pay the shipping, return the item, and just let this one fade into history.

good luck to you two; i'm sure you'll work this out honorably.

Hello,

I have had bad experiences with online trading, but not here.

I believe whole heartedly that a seller or buyer who traded unfairly would be exposed asap and dealt with among these traders/sellers/buyers.

In a situation like this, especially with the knowledge that longstanding members have set a standard for online trading, that patience and tact would pay off nearly every time.

I honestly believe that the label being covered was simply an attempt to present the knife with it`s display case.

You are also dealing with someone who has a "high art", in other words, once provoked, unleashed his disatifaction with your quick accusation.

Send the knife back, pay for the shipping, after all he did pay to ship it to you, and look forward to your next good experience of buying/trading on this forum.

All the best on your future deals, and his. :)

I would just close out the deal and let it go. Even if you feel that you took it in the pants a little, these kinds of things can get out of hand and end up making one or both of the parties look bad.

Dan Walsh...
Why dont we just cut the crap.

The person you are referring to is myself. Lets get the facts straight.

1. I posted a knife for sale. I have sold hundreds of knives on this forum.
2. The knife in question is over 30 years old.
3. I described the knife as best as I thought was necessary for this transaction.
4. you made a low ball offer of $80 shipped which I accepted, You paypaled me and I shipped this knife the same day.
5. Two weeks later out of the blue you send me a email insinuating that I craftily covered blemishes in the box ( I was selling a knife I thought not a display case) and in that you were unhappy with scuff marks on the blade.
6. Insinuating that I am dishonest pissed me off. I apologized for the condition of the knife and told you that I did not appreciate the impication that I deliberatly decieved you. I have shipped many knives far more valuable than your knife ( which has a collector value of over $150 BTW) ask cpritle..once I sent him a $350 custom which when he recieved he was unhappy with. He sent me a polite email saying he was unhappy with the knife and we exhanged knife and refunded money no problem. Chad didnt call me a crook. You could have done a search for the hundreds of positive feedbacks I have recieved on GB&U but instead you jump to conclusions and attack my integrety. When I sent you a emailo on this and refunded your money you could have avioded a lot of this unpleasantness by a simple apology but like a arrogant jerk you are strangly mute about your accusations.
7. You paid $75 for a knife and $5 for USPS priority shipping. Before I received my knife back I refunded your entire amount of your purchase.
8. Unfortunaltly for you, Paypal sent me a email saying that since the funds were already deposited in my account they would have to withdraw funds which would occur in up to 4 business days.
9. You send me the email you recieved except in the text of your email it says that the refund would take 8 days to process. I dont know if this is paypal policy but I start worrying that this transaction is going to take forever.
10. you send me a email saying that you would not send back my knife untill funds clear in your account. This is fine with me. Then you ask me for a "shipping no." to return the knife. I respond that I paid for the shipping and refunded your shipping price..so send the knife back. ( We are talking a whopping $4.70 here)
11. On Wednesday of last week funds clear and I send you a email to this effect. You respond by saying that you will ship the knife " when you can"
12. I respond that that is complete B.S. because you have your money and my knife. and when you paypaled me I was courteous enough to send the knife out the same day.
13. Now you have dropped off the face of the earth and have not emailed me with status or anything untill you in true coward fashion post this post instead of contacting me. Yes I did send you a email on Sat. telling you that I had shipped this knife to you USPS and I would pursue getting MY PROPERTY returned to me. And yes you have royally pissed me off YOU HAVE MY KNIFE AND YOUR MONEY and I have NO communication from you

also in most cases money is usually never refunded untill the knife is returned just like EVERY FRICKING STORE IN THE USA..so I think I treated you pretty good giving you your entire funds back before I recieved my knife but you start whining about a few bucks to ship and then you stop communication all together Dan?? what am I supposed to think..I think I just got screwed.

It completly pisses me off that you would post this thread without trying to settle this dispute first man to man. I told you I was going to post this tale of woe if I did not recieve communication from you by monday. Obviously you have enough time between your three jobs to type this bullshiiit but you dont have the time to email me or get to the post office to SHIP MY FREAKING KNIFE.

so after offending me....do the honerable thing and send me back my knife!!!!!

Hmmm! You're looking pretty bad here, Dan. Methinks you ought to ship the man his knife back tomorrow and then lay low for a while. Maybe people on here would forget about this after a while and consider dealing with you again. But then again, maybe not. I know I wouldn't.
