G'day all,

As an Aussie I have a keen interest in USA made/owned knives. Have a small collection of US old timers (which I'm slowly adding to) A Benchmade is a definite must have - but which one? What is the iconic BM? Kind of like the 110 is the iconic Buck. Yep, after a folder.

Suggestions?

Cheer, Iain

IMO, the 710. It was the first Benchmade to feature the Axis Lock. It's a classic.

710 started the Axis lock but the most iconic since then has been the 940. The size is right for most people and if the reverse tanto blade shape doesn't suit you there's always the clip point 943.

Mate, just keep in mind that any with any Benchmade at best you have a 50/50 chance that customs will seize it if you get it from US.
Probably the linerlocking ones have a slightly better chance than anything with Axis-lock.

To answer you question I'd say 710 or one of the Griptillians.

I'll also say the 710 in D2 & G10. It just seems to stay in the lineup and keep selling year after year after year after...

While I do agree the 710 is iconic being the first one with an axis lock, the 940 is the most iconic in my mind. Benchmade has chosen this model to run a standard production on s90v and carbon fiber, it's a hot seller and will continue.

Next to the 710, my vote is for the Ares series, especially the early models:

Can't have a Benchmade collection without a balisong, considering that's where it all began for them.

I throw the 42 into the ring.

While I'm not a big fan of the 710, I know I am in the minority, so I would probably say the 710 in any configuration, and the Griptilian line, which are my favorite...

I would also have to add the AFCK and TSEK line as well. They have a very strong following for users, and collectors, and have been around for a long time...

My vote is for the original AFCK. Too bad they don't make them or their descendents anymore.

In current Benchmade production the 710 is probably the most widely popular so I would suggest it, even though it doesn't interest me. In some ways it is similar to the AFCK- thin, light, open construction.

In my opinion, both the Griptilian and the AFCK.

I agree. The AFCK was a sleek and effective design. I think of it as a Benchmade analog to the Endura.

The Griptilian was a great working knife from the start. With its offshoots now, it is a major player in the Benchmade lineup.

Next to the 710, my vote is for the Stryker series, especially the early models:

That is an Ares not a Stryker.

Griptilian hands down. What most people think of when they think of BM and definitely the knife they sold/sell the most.
