Idaho Made?

overwhelming majority of clients dislike it

Someone dig out the poll thread, it was like nearly 90% of people didn't like it.

Also on other knife forums the results were similar.

Yeah, I have an active imagination.
I don't buy the unmotivated State pride line, but I could easily be wrong on this.

I could be wrong, but internet forums are almost always paid for by advertising.

You could be wrong.

BF was paid for by Spark, who doesn't even advertise his business that provides the money to do so: One Stop Knife Shop.
BF is now also paid for by memberships: Basic, Gold, Platinum, Knifemaker, Dealer.
We recently added advertisements, but only for non-paid members.

Manufacturers are not charged for their forums here.

Hey Mike, remember your post from back in March?

I think it's disrespectful and kind of rude to complain about the stamp. Chris Reeve can put anything he likes on his knives as he is the designer.

IMO, The sebenzas are such a well known design it's not like the Idaho stamp detracts from what it is. Therefore, I see no issue with it being on there...plus, its a little more "personal" (not sure if thats the best word to use but can't come up with anything else ATM) than "Made in USA" that we see on alot of other knives.

My latest Sebenza is the first one I've had with the "Idaho" stamp. It is really so lightly engraved that it is hard to even see. Of course at 48 years old I need reading glasses so maybe that is part of it!!

Originally I liked the idea of the stamp(Chris's pride of his state and living there), but not the placement. As time has past it is becoming less and less important to me. It may just be that with the economy going to crap and all the unemplyment and so forth,a small stamp on a knife just doesn't rate that much concern anymore. The knife still works the same, the amount of time you are even going to look at the stamp is very slight. The knife is going to be in your pocket, on your dresser or being used. Other than collectors how much time do you spend staring at the knife?

The idea that these polls even begin to be useful as any kind of indication of broad customer opinion is really a stretch. If it were even close to true, CRK would have seen a drop-off in sales that would have given him whiplash and he'd have made a choice between (1) early retirement and (2) going back to the no-engraving style. The fact that it's hard to find new Sebs in stock tells us that demand for these knives still outpaces available supply.

How 'bout a related stupid new-Sebbie-owner question: If it's got the IM mark on the scales, it's from 2010 or later, meaning that it's the S35VN blade?

I took a vacation from the forums and from knife buying due to the birth of my daughter and a shift in how much extra money I have to spend on myself.

This is the first I've heard of it. It won't stop me from buying an Insingo, someday, but i don't like it, at all, and I've very glad I have a clean Sebenza, already.

Most will be, but not all. There are transitional Sebs with S35VN and unmarked scales. I have seen quite a few of those for sale, and I have one of them. There are probably also Sebs that are "IM" marked with S30V blade, but I'm not sure about that. BTW, the cutting performance doesn't differ much.

Hmm, ok, thanks! I'm really not all that concerned one way or another, I just already have a S30V blade, and I'm always poking at the newer steels. :D

I've also had MINOR issues getting my Benchmade S30V to hold an edge the way I'd like, it seems to be very picky about how your edge geometry is set, and how much polish you put on the blade.

I have an Idaho stamped Sebenza with S30V. It's from November 2010. I didn't think they'd switched to S35vn until 2011

Well, I just got 2009 from the mention on their website, in the FAQs. I don't know if that applied to the FIRST knife they made in it, or when they swapped all their knives over to it. Either way, I'm expecting good things. Heat treat makes ALL the difference with the supersteels.

I didn't like it and voted so in the poll but recently bought one of the latest runs of the small insingo. The stamp is hardly noticeable. Not as bad as Spyderco's Gayle Bradley with a Texas logo on one side of the blade and Taiwan on the other.

I think that date is probably right. The earliest S35VN Sebs I remember seeing were from January 2011, but some were assembled using pre-IM scales. It is like the P&R transition with S&W. You can find guns that are pinned but not recessed, and other that are not pinned but are recessed, during the transition period.

I don't like it where it is.
I would rather it be on the blade tang or in smaller print on the lock bar.

I really don't like the text , I wish it could be just inside one of the liners. My problems are:

1.) The text seems to be some flavor of Comic Sans. Anything written in this font I can't take seriously. We have a secretary that writes all her e-mails with it and it drives me nuts.

2.) It's an expensive knife, I don't need a bunch of words on it ruining the aesthetics. I'm one of those people who can't stand the stickers/decals car dealers slap on the back of new cars. I just bought a new Volvo, I told them I wouldn't take delivery until they took off the license plate frames and sticker on the back, maybe it's just me.

I really want a small Isigno, but I'm waiting until I can find one without the "Made in Idaho". And I have no beef with Idaho at all, I've been to Boise, I've visited CRK knives, and they are flat out the best factory knives money (any amount of money) can buy. But I still dislike the Made in Idaho.

So, more or less the only way to tell is the birth certificate?

That's exactly the way I feel Troy. A new CRK is worth every penny IMO, but it's still a lot of penny's to me. If I'm spending that much money, and there are knives without the IM stamp, I'm going to hunt one down. Obviously that's going to be from the used market. The stamp takes away from the simplicity of the aesthetics. CR has every right to put whatever he wants on his knives. But IMHO, it's a mistake when it sounds like the majority of his fans don't like it. I think he should give his fans what they want. 1. Remove the stamp and 2. Bring back the regular (yup, I went there)... And by fans I just mean me. :)

Hey Mike, remember your post from back in March?

Thanks, made me laugh.

Yes, I am being rude and disrespectful but the Idaho Made thing really bugs me.
The more I see it, the more it annoys me.
So much so that I think I'm going to sell my Insingo.

I know that as the finish wears on the knife it will get more and more prominent too.

But the blade is really nice, so I want to keep it.

Also I still honestly can't believe that it isn't to do with some sort of State sponsored grant or tax break or something.
Effectively making it an ad right there on my knife, turning me into a shill.
That sort of thing is very common down here.
I work in the film industry, so maybe I'm a little more aware of this sort of thing and maybe I'm a little more cynical than some.
