Idiots without knives

Why would someone come into a knife discussion and say "Bringing knives to work for such simple tasks is usually unnecessary and useless."?

When I worked at Target, we were issued those cheapie folded steel box cutters as needed. I must have had half a dozen of them even though i rarely needed one.

Generally I always carried a SAK or more often a multi-tool. In addition to needing a box opener, I would often run into something that needed tweaked, tightened, or bent. I never once was told not to bring my knife/tool to work. Actually, I became the go-to guy;)

On the converse of that, we had this seasonal guy that brought a cheap fixed blade to work for opening boxes. The thing must have had a 5" blade. A SAK or small knife generally won't scare the customers, but a big honking fixed blade had to be a no-no. He didn't come back to work after Christmas. There is a time and place for a specific tool;)

I work at a job that requires some hand tools to adjust and maintain machinery, and salvage parts not made correctly.

The management refuses to provide basic hand tools - hex wrenches, a "Crescent" wrench, or even a hammer. I did for awhile. Now I don't.

It is not my responsibility to provide tools necessary for my employment. I'm not a mechanic, I'm a machine operator. I only bring a pocket knife now. If it takes me two more minutes to chase down the one hammer in the the department, that's management's policy concerning my employment, and a condition I have to work under.

This place gives no consideration if you do bring tools to make the job easier. And when you leave, if something is missing, the guy with the toolbox is blamed - not the coworker who saw a target of opportunity.

It doesn't help that this employer is the largest recruiter of felons in town. They don't care.

NOT bringing a knife to work for simple tasks really is unnecessary. If management won't provide them, then that's their working policy. Don't bring one to help them out if you don't want to. It's not required.

I think he should have sharpened the coat hanger first. A dull coat hanger is dangerous tool:D!

Coat hangers only have 2 uses. Opening boxes is not one of them

1. hanging clothes.
2. If flipped upside down you can use the hook to hold an IV fluid bag.
3. If it is a metal one you can untwist it and make one heck of a marshmellow stick for smores.

;):D

Maybe the poor guy just works somewhere that doesn't allow employees to carry a pocket knife or even a box cutter. Where I work we can't and we get a box cutter with no blade.

Agree with this. It is up to the employer to provide you with the necessary work tools. What they don't provide means that it is unecessary for the job. Most jobs that require a box cutter will provide a box cutter to their employees. Only knife nuts will use every excuse in the book to use a Sebenza to open a box sealed with tape.

If I relied on my employers(in the past) to provide the tools I needed to do my job, I would have been totally screwed.
Busted, dull box-cutters, scissors too dull for kindergarden, hammers where the head flew off, screwdrivers which wouldn't even fit the screw they were intended for anymore, flashlights too weak to light up one room, let alone be used on a guard patrol, respirators not even rated for the hazards we were working in...
Yeah, I should have relied on the employer.

You didn't exercise your rights as an employee then. It would have been better to voice your complaints to them than pout about for years.

You don't understand how low-waged jobs go, do you?
Your "rights" don't really count in many cases(I KNOW, as I have checked with the Ministry of Labour).
And you think I spent years pouting? Hell no, I brought the tools I needed to do the crappy, low paying jobs I could find in this terrible economy(Try finding a good job in Windsor), and now I'm in university so I don't have to work for uncaring scum like I had to in the past.
If you think the governmental agencies will help out workers, you are wrong. At the one factory I worked at, we found a filing cabinet FILLED with notices from the Ministry of Health and Safety(or whatever it's called these days). Warning after warning, month after month. Faulty machine guards, cracked plexiglass windows(which were supposed to keep flying metal objects from splitting your head), cranes which needed maintenance, etc. The problems eventually got jury-rigged solutions which didn't make things safe, but the Ministry let it slide.
The government agencies exist so that middle and upper class folks can rest easy, thinking that the rest of society is protected. Oh, and to have investigations AFTER someone has died.
That's reality.

A simple box-cutter would have worked. Knives are unnecessary for a lot of tasks.

I do not agree with this. I have worked as a dishwasher in one restaurant and a runner in another. Nether provide non-slip shoes. I know from experience that substituting sneakers doesn't cut it. Likewise I have had to open many boxes in stockrooms. Could I have used my keys on most of them? Yes. Did bringing a knife make it much easier. Yes.

Yeah I tend to laugh when I see people trying to open things with thier keys or teeth looking like they devolved into cro magnons right in front of me, then I get pissed when I hand them a knife to save them the dental bills and they look at me like I'm the crazy barbarian halfwit that carrys a knife. Oh well I dont do it for them I do it cause thats the way I was raised and I've had instances where it was worth it's weight in gold to have it.

You should have gotten another job sooner then.

You should have gotten another job sooner then.

You STILL have no clue of what you speak.
I'm done with you, as you have no handle on the realities of life, or what people outside your idealized bubble experience.:thumbdn:
Maybe when you've lived a bit more, in a few different situations, you will grow up to the point where you aren't so annoyingly close-minded and condescending.
But I doubt it.

Duh stabman! It's so much easier to find another job than to bring a hammer from home. It's about principles man. Maybe the rent doesn't get paid, but at least you didn't have to pack your own hammer.

The troll returned. Tirod and Homer - what the hell - wake up smell the depression boys. Your tired attitudes are just too 1990's!
