Hello, j.d.,
Since I am probably one of the few up this early, I will give you the feedback you desire. You are pricing your knives at retail pricing. One example is the Starmate. A regular Starmate is $75 wholesale. Limited run or pre-prod does not add that much value to a production knife. Individuals that are selling their personal knives usually do not put a change amount in the sale price (e.g. $155.95) in the for sale/trade area. I feel the spirit of the for sale/trade area should be for fun and to add new knives to one's collection. The only time it may be ethically correct (in these forums) to sell a privately owned knife for more than what was paid for it is a knife that automatically increases in value as soon as it it bought from the maker (i.e., customs, some microtechs, emerson customs, etc.). If you have a booth or area at a flea market, I must assume you have a tax ID. That means you can buy from wholesale distributors. If you overprice on the private for sale forum, you will be peer evaluated. Hundreds of people sell here; only a few get pointed out for resembling a dealer in the private section. If you are one of the very few that get pointed out, is it your peers (the KnifeKnuts) or is it your methods.

The big "but" to all this is that they are your knives, this is an open forum, and you can price them any way you want. I have been here long enough and I will speak for others...please do not try to make a profit in the private sale area, it takes away the pleasure of what we do here.

Since I am the one that brought this up in the first place, I will speak on it.

As you have readily stated in your most recent posts that you are a "Flea market man", you no doubt do a lot of wheeling and dealing with whatever items you sell. If these items are knives, then obviously you are a knife dealer. If the items you sell at flea markets are not knives, then you are obtaining your knives from either a dealer friend or a distributor using your tax ID number that you obtained for the purpose of buying at wholesale prices whatever it is that you sell.

It seems to me that you are coming up with a lot of brand new, current production model, and sometimes serial numbered knives. The only way to get a lot of these things is from either a distributor or dealer.

How do I know this, because I myself am a small private dealer (with no internet prescence) and soon to be knifemaker. The difference is, that if I put a knife in the Individual For Sale forum, it is a knife that I purchased for myself and have had for a while or I got from trading with other people, and I sell them at very reasonable prices and many times under wholesale pricing. If I have some knives that I have for sale through my business I will put them in the Dealer For Sale forum.

Now don't get me wrong, I am in no way trying to tell you what you should do with your knives, you can sell them at whatever price you want, and if people want them, they will buy them, but let's just try to be a little more truthful in how they are obtained.

I don't know, maybe I am wrong about the whole thing, but obviously if this has come this far, then others think the same thing.

Or better yet, if you would simply explain your situation, then maybe people woudn't be asking these questions.

And please do not take this as an personal attack, it is not, I am just asking what others have been wondering. Have a nice day.

Got to agree about the prices, jd.

I've been getting an honest chuckle when I see prices approaching retail referred to as "great deals", especially when the same items are being offered in the same place for far less.

Your prices crack me up. However, as stated above, you are free to try and get any price you want, but if I were you, I wouldnt get my hopes up. Your prices are what I would expect to see in a mall. If you really want to sell/trade on here for fun, thats great, but I think most of us are to smart to be gouged on price. If you have something to sell from your personal collection, look at what others are selling thiers for, and try and be competitive, otherwise, you probably ought to stick to the flea markets. Just a thought.

Hey J.D., I'm glad you're open to suggestions here, that's a good sign. I assume that you're from another country, judging by your grammer, so I'd like to say that your english / spelling isn't too bad. If you'd like to check your prices against others, HERE is a good place to start. Good Luck!!!

J.D. Welcome to the forums. The Individuals For Sale Forum, is just that, hobbyist or occasional sales or trades. Dealers (Resellers) have their own listing under Knives for Sale/Dealers. You in my opinion fit in the classification of a dealer or reseller. List there, compete with the other dealers and I wish you the best. Price your knives at what you wish and let the free market determine the outcome.

J.D.,

Thanks for taking the time to reply and help us understand how it is that you obtain your knives. Welcome to the forums and stick around, you just might learn something from all these knife knuts, I know I sure did, and I continue to learn everyday.

Man.....you gotta love the conversation on this forum. You guys are straight up & I like it. I know as small dealer" like myself(one who has tax ID & works full-time during the day at another job) trying to pick-up a few extra dollars for these hungry mouths over here, it does frustrate me to sometimes see NIB's being sold quite a bit by the same individuals on a regular basis for what might seem to be a nice profit. It does make you question where they are buying at or you wonder if they just enjoy transferring the cash around. Well, I'm a dealer, but I will only post in dealer section, unless perhaps it is my personal carry that I'm ready to move. We must play by the rules around here!

My few pennies worth.

JD in this Forum, just go by this one rule (I learned from my Father) and you will prosper. Treat others like you would like to be treated. I have seen over and over, if you give someone a chance to screw you on this board; they won't. I have sent knives out before payment and have never been zapped. One thing though, if your word is not good, we will know fast! Enjoy and good luck!

Just my personal opinion...... I think that "j.d." is too cool
cool.gif
!!!!!!

He throws a post up, opens himself up as a no BS - straight forward kinda guy!!!!

Never bought a knife from him nor remember seeing his previous posts........so can't comment about his prices or anything else....

Takes a little heat about his spellin' and knife sellin'......... MAN!!! Comes back to you all as a very nice guy!!! Really down to earth!!!

I'm not frettin' about his status (may he be a distributor or dealer).

J.D., welcome! It's nice to see some good ole fashioned kindness these days!!! And not the type of cuts normally received from paper!

I will offer something......don't worry about the wanna-be-moderators.......their tongues (actually keyboards) tend to be sharper than their blades!

Welcome, and who cares how anyone spells or uses grammar, communication is the ability to get beyond that crap and understand each other. Sounds like good communication was established, and sounds to me like JD is an honest upstanding member of bladeforums. Gotta go, getting all choked up....
