If I dont own a Sebenza.....

I'd say you don't have to OWN one. To merely have handled one would be enough. To have handled one after having a bit of experience with other knives is even better.

I have owned 4 in the past, but do not currently own one. I will own another one, some day, though.

Really, it's about the experience. Many will say you can't judge other knives unless you've seen them, and with CRK it really is that way.

Once you've experienced a Sebenza, you have a new bench-mark with which to compare other knives.

I don't own one and probably never will, I really don't think it changes how seriously I'm taken and don't understand how it could.

No.:p

JK, why would it make a difference? I own a Sebenza, and nobody takes me seriously.

I had a large, sold it a week or two later. Will probably never own another.

Not my cup o' tea and don't see what the fuss is all about really....

Absolutely you can. I have been a knife enthusiast my entire life. I have never owned a Sebenza, and get this...I don't like frame/liner locks. Especially the trend of insanely overbuilt, over priced ones. Knives like that in my opinion fall into the realm of man jewelry and not tools. Nothing wrong with owning a Rolex watch either, but its not a must have for anyone that wants to tell time.

We all like different stuff be it tactical/self defense, traditional, outdoors, folding, fixed, multitools etc...

There, I said it, hopefully Bladeforums wont revoke my registration.

I really couldn't care less if people "take me seriously as a knife guy".

I don't need the approval of anyone.

If you shop the forums here long enough, it wouldn't be that hard to buy a Strider SnG, Hinderer XM18, and Sebenza, use them for a month each, then sell them for exactly what you paid. You'd be out nothing but time, and would probably enjoy using some very nice knives :)

I own a Sebenza, and nobody takes me seriously.

Great post :D

Great post!I own zero frame/liner locks. And it will stay that way...I hate them! And that detracts in no way from those who love them.My favorite lock is the Axis lock.I think it is a wonderful advance...oily smooth as well as strong!Fantastic!
I like well built lockbacks too...but they are not as much fun!

I share your taste re the huge overbuilt framelock trend.

I like Rolex watches.I wear my Dad's 1985 Datejust stainless every day.It is very conservative compared to some of the more bling ones.
Cell Phones have time derived from atomic clocks...and are far more accurate! And nearly everybody carries one.But a fine mechanical watch is very cool.
I can understand the Sebenza's appeal.They are very nice.They just have a lock I can't stand!

So, I agree with you.You can be a knife guy...and not own a Sebenza.

Some people will take you more seriously if you own one, and others will take you less seriously. One reviewer, who has plenty of street creds and over 190,000,000 Youtube hits, characterized the Sebenza as a "douche knife" because they cost so much for what you are actually getting. So there is a spectrum of opinion on that one. Ultimately, you will have to decide for yourself. I own 4 or 5 CRKs, and after 10 years still can't decide if they are the best knives ever or the biggest douche knives of all time. For me, its 50/50. They are smooth and solid knives made to high tolerances, and I envy the guys that are really into them. I wish I was too. But Sebenzas are way harder to deploy than a $60 Delica, have a clip you can't move, don't actually cut any better than knives costing 25% as much, and are priced out the wazoo for what you are actually getting.

Maybe its like dating Kate Upton. At first, she's the hottest thing ever, but then a month later, you figure out that . . . she's still the hottest thing ever. Okay - bad analogy.

Rock on.

You might be taken seriously as a knife guy but if you breathe a word about fit & finish without owning a Sebenza, the character assassins come out of the woodwork.

Sometimes they do this even if you do own one.

growing up a buck 110 meant you were a serious knife guy

I remember when everyone who was into knives in HS had one.I carried an ancient barlow. The first knife I ever bought myself was a Bucklite.
I wore it for years on my belt.It was a very good knife! Then I bought a spyderco Endura...that pretty much sealed my fate...

You make it sound like Sebenza owners are part of a cult.

oh wait...

My limited impression is the Sebenza is to knives what a 1911 gun is to semi-autos. And as with guns or any other collection, if you're a serious collector then it's not about whether other collectors think you're a serious collector. The only perspective that matters is the perspective from between your two ears. I'd even say if you're concerned whether you would be viewed as a serious collector then you're not a serious collector but a wanna be poser. Not that I'm saying YOU are; I'm just making a general statement.

LOL! Yes, bad analogy. But hey, I'd try it on to see "if it's for me" or not.

Tried the Sebenza. It's not for me. Don't want to take me seriously as a knife guy now? Don't. Knife not for you? Fine.

Sebenzanistas are still going to come out of the woodwork and make sure the flaw is with you and not the knife, however. ;)
