If I dont own a Sebenza.....

Then can I ever be taken seriously as a knife guy?

I'm not so sure he's being serious with this question ???

Maybe just wanting to see the reactions. Not really sure.

Just in case you are being serious....yes, of course you can be taken serious if you don't own a Sebenza.
The Regular and Classic Sebenza are my favorite knives, but that doesn't mean anyone should take me anymore serious than someone that collects Jarbenzas:p

How anyone can call the Sebenza a d****e knife is beyond me. There are literally countless custom knives out there at triple (or more) the price with maybe 1/50th the functionality. There are production knives priced higher that perform marginally worse in at least one aspect. I get that it's not a knife for everyone but the argument that it is over glorified or snooty is just asinine.

You'll probably be taken very seriously by all the warriors carrying folding swords and the survivalists who need the spine of their knives to start fires in the 21st century. And after all, the internet is a serious place. Well played :)

I haven't handled one yet, but I think I kind of have to so I can have my own opinion of it.

If you aren't impressed at first, remember that you just haven't handled enough quality knives to appreciate a Sebenza.

Since it had been 15+ yrs since I'd handled a friend's Sebenza, I recently purchased a large Insingo. Easy enough to recogniZe the quality...but I was underwhelmed. I posted a thread entitled "Meh?" in the CRK forum; and was pleasantly surprised by the tone of most of the replies.

In response to the comment that everybody should have a knife against which to compare the quality of all others - I was once given a cheap souvenir shop knife - that is what I use as a benchmark, and the knives I have all compare favorably.

The sebenza doesn't really appeal to me. The only Sebenzas that make me want to run out and spend too much money, are the DT damascus blades. To answer your question. When im reading posts, I don't think does this person own a sebenza. So no I don't think it matters.

.......Maybe its like dating Kate Upton. At first, she's the hottest thing ever, but then a month later, you figure out that . . . she's still the hottest thing ever. Okay - bad analogy.

I picked yours to weigh in here because I've used a similar analogy for a long time.

I've owned four Sebenzas over about ten years. One small, three large. I still have a large in a drawer. It's CGI and extremely well done.

I think they probably are the best folder out there. I also think people into knives should own at least one in their lifetime---because, let's face it, speaking generally, anyone into knives who hasn't yet had a Sebenza WANTS to have one. I usually advise people who have the budget to buy it first and get it out of the way.

I can't bond with 'em. It's as simple as that. It feels like I'm holding a squared off slug of titanium with a blade in it. I liken it to the beauty pageant contestant with no personality or soul. But it doesn't mean I can't acknowledge what a high quality product they are.

Yeah, you can be taken seriously without owning a Sebenza. Without EVER owning one?? That's going to depend on how hard you eventually get the pull for one. :)

I have many Sebenza's, yet I don't feel any smarter or more privileged in owning them. So, no as many has already said. There are a few things to know if you want to be taken as a serious knife guy. BTW, your post is not taken as silly. Make intelligent posts, remember, what you put on the web, never goes away. Participate in discussions based on your level of knowledge on any thread. Always be willing to listen without being biased and form your own opinion. Always read and listen to understand and not just to reply.
To be taken seriously as a knife guy is not about any one brand of knife, but rather, how you react to what someone says, how you respect a knife in front of people, especially non knife people. But most of all, it's about having fun and learning about this wonderful hobby. That's all.

Ahaaa!

If you don't own a Sebenza it means you haven't drunk the kool-aid and you've got at least half a brain. If I couldn't sell it or trade it I wouldn't spend 20 bucks for one. It's just that boring.

This is an example of the polar opposite of what the OP is asking. Fanboys and haters, can't have one without the other. I don't know what is really worse between the two, I would say that they are equally bad. YMMJVALMTM...

I completely agree with Rev. Just because I own a Sabenza, does not mean I drank any kool-aid, and last time I checked, I had a whole brain. I also am not preaching the gospel of the Sebenza from the mountain top.

Can't someone just own a Sebenza because they like it, and it's a good knife?

One wonders what kind of person even makes a post such as this.

Even as a knife guy (knife enthusiast), and I think that I am..... I'm mystified. Almost equally bewildered by the number of serious knife people, who have apparently taken this dimbulb seriously. Could it be that Those who DO own one...will take even the faintest opportunity to talk about them. BTW...Eliteone might be a stretch as am online name. LOL. Get a life. shrug

I don't remember the exact quote but, "A flower does not need acknowledgement of its beauty from other flowers".

Why should you care if you are taken seriously? Which would help you sleep better, owning a Sebenza or being taken seriously?

A flower that screams louder than all the other flowers is not better, "tolerances", nor is it more beautiful, "fit & finish".

I own a Sebenza and I could give a Rat's ass if anybody takes me seriously......My opinion really only matters to me.I consider a Sebenza of good quality and I seem to be pleased with the quality and my personal perceived value of my particular knife...Seriously it's a keeper in my eyes..Can anyone see through my eyes?Expensive does not always mean better, but sometimes you get what you pay for. There are many knifes that I like and a Sebenza has a place in my lineup.I would probably choose to own one Sebenza knife rather than 5 or 6 , or even 10 cheaper costing and generally lower quality knives such as Gerber,Remington, and Colt(new models)That's my opinion and I don't think owning any particular knife gives me creds, or props, etc.........

Does owning a lexicon make you wiser?
A guy on the street with a 6" kitchen knife is taken seriously.
Press would call him a "knife guy".
;)
