If I dont own a Sebenza.....

99.99% of the people I meet or know, could only name two or three knife brands at best.

They wouldn't even know Spyderco, Benchmade or Kershaw let alone Chris Reeve knives.

I had a large, sold it a week or two later. Will probably never own another.

Not my cup o' tea and don't see what the fuss is all about really....

Absolutely you can. I have been a knife enthusiast my entire life. I have never owned a Sebenza, and get this...I don't like frame/liner locks. Especially the trend of insanely overbuilt, over priced ones. Knives like that in my opinion fall into the realm of man jewelry and not tools. Nothing wrong with owning a Rolex watch either, but its not a must have for anyone that wants to tell time.

We all like different stuff be it tactical/self defense, traditional, outdoors, folding, fixed, multitools etc...

There, I said it, hopefully Bladeforums wont revoke my registration.

I have to agree. I think the frame lock folders out there are cool looking but I'd rather cut my apple with my Opinel because it does it best. To be fair I've never owned a Sebenza proper though. I've never seen the appeal either.

I own only two CRK knives...a 2002 Sebenza and a 2011 Umnumzaan. Excellent knives, and I especially got some good use out of the Seb.

That said, who cares who might or might not take you seriously as a knife guy? Where does it matter? On forums? How about simply loving, respecting and properly using your knives? That's far more important than what brand of knife you own. There are people in many countries who routinely use cheap, no-name cutlery daily for hard-use survival who I guess wouldn't be taken seriously by 'knife people'.

What's most important is what serves you best and makes you happy.

Some people will take you more seriously if you own one, and others will take you less seriously. One reviewer, who has plenty of street creds and over 190,000,000 Youtube hits, characterized the Sebenza as a "douche knife" because they cost so much for what you are actually getting. So there is a spectrum of opinion on that one. Ultimately, you will have to decide for yourself. I own 4 or 5 CRKs, and after 10 years still can't decide if they are the best knives ever or the biggest douche knives of all time. For me, its 50/50. They are smooth and solid knives made to high tolerances, and I envy the guys that are really into them. I wish I was too. But Sebenzas are way harder to deploy than a $60 Delica, have a clip you can't move, don't actually cut any better than knives costing 25% as much, and are priced out the wazoo for what you are actually getting.

Maybe its like dating Kate Upton. At first, she's the hottest thing ever, but then a month later, you figure out that . . . she's still the hottest thing ever. Okay - bad analogy.

Rock on.

Great post!!

I agree with this guy 100%. I have only owned 2 sebenzas, and currently only own a large 21. I like it and appreciate how it's made and everything. But it's not the end all be all knife for me.

Some days I can't use it enough, other days I leave it behind for my military or SNG.

I have also found that they are not the best slicers in comparison to a lot of other knives I have owned that are of a similar design.

I will say that when I was without one, I felt the urge to purchase another one really bad. Like a good buddy told me once" there must be nicotine in the Ti slabs that gets people addicted or something". Hahaha.

I'm currently working on a review for the large I have been carrying. Running it through its paces to see how it performs.

So to answer your question.
NO you do not need to own one to be taken seriously. If anyone else tell you something different, their crazy.

If you don't own a Sebenza it means you haven't drunk the kool-aid and you've got at least half a brain. If I couldn't sell it or trade it I wouldn't spend 20 bucks for one. It's just that boring.

I think everyone should have a knife in their collection against which they can judge the quality of every other knife in their collection. In the category of production folders, that knife is the Sebenza for me. YMMV.

My limited impression is the Sebenza is to knives what a 1911 gun is to semi-autos. And as with guns or any other collection, if you're a serious collector then it's not about whether other collectors think you're a serious collector. The only perspective that matters is the perspective from between your two ears. I'd even say if you're concerned whether you would be viewed as a serious collector then you're not a serious collector but a wanna be poser. Not that I'm saying YOU are; I'm just making a general statement.

Exactly. You're "expected" to have one if you're "serious". Here's a Dalton, a Ralph, a D'Holder, and over here a Sebenza..."

I have started taking you much more seriously since you picked up your first Sebenza......

If I dont own a Sebenza.....
Then can I ever be taken seriously as a knife guy?

If you are interested enuf to ask, you should try one out, and sell it if you don't like it.

To have handled one after having a bit of experience with other knives is even better.

I haven't handled one yet, but I think I kind of have to so I can have my own opinion of it.

I doubt I would buy one — but maybe the mysterious Ti slabs will whisper to me and force my hand.

Now just what in tarnation does this mean? I keep seeing it pop up. Just assumed it means "you're making me violent" but that can't be it!

Aha! Thanks bld522.

If you don't own one, then you don't own one. What makes you a true "knife guy" may be defined differently by whom you ask. What makes you a "knife guy" is a combination of knowledge, experience, and having handled or owning a variety of cutting instruments and knowing about them, their origin, and who designs and makes what for whatever genre you are interested in. I own a car, but that doesn't make me a NASCAR guy.

If you don't own a Sebenza it means you haven't drunk the kool-aid and you've got at least half a brain. If I couldn't sell it or trade it I wouldn't spend 20 bucks for one. It's just that boring.

This is an example of the polar opposite of what the OP is asking. Fanboys and haters, can't have one without the other. I don't know what is really worse between the two, I would say that they are equally bad. YMMJVALMTM...
