If the Axis is the best locking mechanism

allenC said:
BTW, have you ever placed an Axis-lock folder, or a Benchmade Bali-song, in a vice and performed your suggested test?.

I have seen folders with far more metal break under impacts. I have not handled high end bali's, the only ones I have seen are low end as they are not legal here. The basic point would be what is the central pin made from on the bali, how is it heat treated and how large is it. If it was bainite L6 at about 1/8" then you would probably break the blade before the pin would shear, however if it was some stainless steel at 1/16", not hardened, then it would be fairly easy to crack it off.

Well, I put my cheap Fury bali-song to the test.
First I placed it in the vice and pulled downward on the handle as hard as I could--everything was just fine.
But the way my vice is positioned on the workbench does'nt give me enough room and leverage to apply enough force.
So I wedged the open blade inside a cutout of a shelving rack and stepped on the handle placing all of my weight (218 lbs.) on the handle.

The results:

It failed, but not in the way I expected.
The blade and stop-pin held out just fine, but the cheapo Fury has thin brass liners and brass bolsters and plastic scales.
It also has a pivot pin instead of a pivot screw.
The thin brass liners deformed, bowing outward on one side, and the pivot-pin came out of that liner.

I don't have any pics but I could mail the remains to someone who can post pics.

I'm really wondering how my Benchmade Bali-song would fare with its titanium handles and thicker pivot-screw...but I can't make myself risk damaging it just yet.

Allen.

Ask Benchmade, they promote the strength of the axis as having a high break point, so inquire as to the ability of the bali in comparison. Interesting break, heavier folders can take adult body weights, many problems happen just as yours did with the handle itself coming apart.
