If the lock mechanism on my pocket knife breaks or fails while using the knife will my fingers be cut off?

I'd say it depends on the design of the knife, how you were holding it, and what you were doing with it.

I think if a person cut off a finger, or just cut themselves period due to lock failure, that it's very likely they made a big mistake when using the knife.

My advice- Don't make big mistakes when using knives.

That's the advice I live by, and after several decades of using folding knives I still have all my fingers.

Know the limitations of your knives, and use them accordingly.

It is a possibility, albeit a low one.

People always find ways to hurt themselves inadvertently or by using a tool in an unsafe way.

I have had a few close calls on liner locks that have handle flex, such as the Kershaw Whirlwind. When applying a bit of side pressure while cutting can unlock the blade.

It would take a very large amount of force to get all the way through a finger though, even at a knuckle.

relax op.....dont get yourself all worked up and paranoid.........good proper knife usage even used on a poorly built knife won't let you lose fingers or get hurt......

take a deep breath, youre gonna be fine if you use proper knife handling techniques.......i have been fine and with all my fingers for many decades.

Whenever I use a folding knife I always light an M-80 and grip it in the same hand. That way when it blows my fingers off I can come to BF and complain that [Axis locks are flawed/liner locks are flawed/MTech is not the quality brand I was led to believe/Cold Steel's "Iron Proof" tests are all fake/no folding knife is safe/etc.]. ;)

All of your fingers will probably not be completely cleanly severed . ;)

But if you have a lot of force pushing on the spine of the knife , going against the lock , you could certainly be cut .

If you are concerned , get a Cold Steel with their Tri-ad lock .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

If you think folding knives are dangerous, walk up on a job site where there’s power tools and look at the ground…fingers everywhere.
In 30 yrs of construction I’ve seen two guys cut off their thumbs. Actually, one guy only lost half his thumb to a tablesaw. The other lost his entire thumb to a miter saw. I found his thumb laying on the saw horse shelf. The first thing I thought when I saw his digit was, “damn, Matt’s got a long thumb” Weird.
We quickly got him to an emergency room and they sewed it back on. He got 80% movement back.

So on the bright side, if you do cut off your fingers, they can just sew them back on. No worries. 😁

Ignoring the basic tenets of safe knife handling will always buy you a trip to the medicine cabinet.
And that's without breaking anything!
But if you treat them as If they're always trying to chop you up: they never will.

Emergency room? Sutures? Those are for wusses.

Real men use duct tape and a staple gun, and then it's right back to work. 😁
