(If) There Can Be Only One

Count me in for the 18 inch WW11. I would give the 20 inch serupati to my wife, and the village serupati to one of my kids, that way I could still have all three!!

What? Another knife? Don't you have enough of those things already?
How many does one person need?

It's a real good all round knife, Jay.

Judging by all the positive feedback, it looks like the 18" WWII will have to move further up my "Wanted" Khukuri list! HIKV, big-time!

At the moment, I can't wait to get home and spend quality time with my 20" Sirupati which arrived this morning. Another HI khukuri which has surpassed my expectations - this is getting to be a habit! OAL is actually 21", with a 15" blade. Sleek and deadly, this can definitely qualify as a short-sword. Karda and Chakma are huge, especially when you compare them to the others in the market. Scabbard is a bit tight, as Uncle Bill had mentioned, but nothing that a bit of treatment won't take care of. There is one happy khukuri-owner in NYC today! Thanks, Uncle Bill!

Oh no! Not another NYC HIKV-positive person, gtkguy!

This makes at least four confirmed cases in NYC of which I know. Looks like its reaching epidemic proportions.

It may be of some interest to some to learn that Sonam (GTKguy)spent most of his life in India and Nepal, growing up with a Gurkha regiment. He tells me that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to find the HI quality khukuris available on the market in either India or Nepal. This is the same thing noted knife collector, Dr. Bill Rosenthal, told me when he travelled to India and Nepal on a knife and khukuri search. I, too, have noticed the same thing.

Back to the top for Arvind. And the question *was* asked of Pala Kami - he will go with the Gelbu Special, one which had not been available until the last couple weeks. Incidentally, I'd go with ( mind on tilt!!! )

I would have to say my 16.5 inch WWII model. Based on what I've done so far with it at least. Keep in mind however I have'nt tried the other HI models yet so when I do, my opinion could be revised

The 20",or so.AK has a lot going for it,if you don`t have to wear it.If you can lift it,it will do most of the work.I split a piece that was a little to big for the stove. It was just laying flat on the pile.A light chop, and I had wood, without chasing pieces,as with an axe.

The 16.5 inch WWII is excellent. It's like a 2 wheel drive pickup. Does about everything you can ask and if you can use it well, a lot it shouldn't be able to.

I haven't a clue why mine doesn't stand out to *me* as special. Maybe for someone who isn't 5'4" it'll feel more light and lively. Oh well, I have more than my share of khuks with their own character and spirit all their own.

I'm looking to buy my first Khukuri soon, and I have found this forum very useful. I have used many different Khukuris, though none of them seemingly higher quality HI models, in fact, some of them were quite hideous disgraces to the steel used to make them. I was just wondering, all things being equal, which is a more useful blade design, the Ang Khola, or the WWII?

A.d.i.d.a.m.
It depends on what you aregoing to use a Kuhkuri for as to which is better suited for you.
I believe the Gelbu Special is gonna be a top contender for favorites before to much longer.
There is lots of discussion about this very subject in a lot of the old threads.

Khukuri FAQ

Yeah, immediately after posting, I realized that I wasn't very clear on what "useful" pertained to. What I meant was, general camp chores: chopping wood, clearing brush, food preperation (though that's more for the Karda), field dressing, and so on... My understanding is that, for the most part, with the 18", it comes down to aesthetics, and the question of "do I need/want an extra 10 oz ?

The 18" WWII is lighter than the 18" AK, but it is still a great chopper from what I hear. It might be what you're looking for. Interestingly, the GH WWII has been voted as the best all round khukuri of the GH models. That weapon/tool combination is a pretty powerful one at that.

Ghost is right, it is an impossible question.
I'd go for the WWII 18", but others that could do just about everything are the 16.5" WWII, 15" AK, some of the BAS's that turn out to be 16", an 18" Chainpuri or or or...
