If you could keep only one "Traditional", what would it be?

schrade(USA)LB7

That's pretty much my answer; for years I got along just fine with a single bladed knife, either a lighter-weight non-locking cutter or a larger lockback like the LB7. If it came down to a choice, I could get along just fine with one of my old Schrade LB-types. That one blade could do most, if not all, of my lifetime cutting chores.

My keyring has a few little tools on it that would do everything a Scout/Utility knife would do, and more, so my LB-type & my keyring stuff would probably be it.

thx - cpr

A Herman Williams customized Schrade 61OT Old Timer, and that is a single carry I can live with.

I think with only one knife to keep, it would have to be both eminently practical and significantly meaningful.

Multiple blades, large enough and small enough to do any job and still be pocketable would satisfy the practicality.
Favored pattern and materials with excellent workmanship would satisfy the emotional attachment.

After some thought, my choice is the Tidioute Cuban Stockman, at 4-1/8" in 1095 steel and ram's horn handle.

Running a close second, with D2 steel but only 3-3/4", the RAT Railsplitter.

My Voss Cut Co 4 inch stag handle stockman. That would do me good for the rest of my life.

If I could only have one slipjoint, it would of course then become not a hobby, or collection, or interest, avocation or otherwise have any parameters in common with knife collecting. It would now be a relationship with a loved tool and companion. I carried a knife like that from 1970 to the late 1980's, a Boker congress knife which I totally wore out. Lately I have a dear everyday companion, a 6375 Case stockman, part of my crew of beloved stockmans and cattle knives. I also have its safequeen sister, a 1970 5375, which would become my only knife, if such it must be. Still sitting by the phone, waiting for Ken Erickson's call. That might change everything.

Okay...I've given this some thought and it's a brutally hard question to answer.

Putting aside purchase or aftermarket values and issues deriving from best usage for particular tasks, if I had to eliminate all knives but one from my "traditional" knives collection I would keep this one by Ken Erickson:

The reason for my choice is that this knife represents to me a near perfect balance of the cutler's art, the rich history of slipjoints, a salute to the men who used such knives in building our nation and lastly because it was thought out, designed and built in concert with a friend who stands for and represents values I hold dear.

I am truly humbled that you have picked this knife Elliott. I appreciate everyone's choice in this thread, all great knives in one aspect or another. It means tons to me to know that folks understand how much I enjoy bringing these vintage patterns back to life and celebrating the men and the times when these knives were not much more than a everyday tool.

Can't do it. I bought a Case Barlow in stainless when Grandma died, and I got a Queen 4" Congress in carved amber bone when my daughter had heart surgery. Both are staying put...right alongside of the little Camillus boyscout lockback that Dad bought me when I was a kid.

Why do people keep bringing up this topic in a new thread. My answer is still the same but in my case it is 3 knives

Leatherman original Wave
CRK Classic large Sebenza
Falkniven F1

Of the 3 - practicality would win over heart and push comes to shove it would have to be the Wave (or one of my other LM's)

Why are you complaining when of the three you listed, only one (barely) fits the parameters of the Traditional Forum?

FYI, not everyone is aware of the earlier threads and some folks weren't around for them. Let's cut 'em a little slack. ;)

And let's try to remember which forum we're posting in as well.

That's such a tough question. After some deliberation, I'd probably go with this Ohta:

It isn't my most expensive knife, nor is it the most versatile, but it feels so 'right' in my hand, Wharnies serve my day-to-day needs particularly well and its solid build quality is very confidence-inspiring. It feels like a knife that can stand up to a lifetime of carry and use and keep on tickin' without a hiccup.

I love all the answers. It seems as though everyone one is giving it alot of thought. For me during the week with where I work it's always the same 2 knives.

I love the weekends they allow me to carry the knives I would never risk losing at work.

If I didn't have to work where I do that case cv stock would be with me all the time...funny, I care more about a $60 easy to replace knife because it reminds me of what my Dad and Grandfathers carried than the $300 strider that sometimes goes to work with me! lol

I don't post on Traditonal much anymore since my interests are sort of 'all over the place' concerning knives lately , even though a thrid of my recently culled collection are Slipjoints.

Only one out of them all ? My Dad gave me a Wenger SAK , it is still in it's box , it was given to him by an old friend who is now died of cancer and even though the Wegner is pretty ubiquitous as opposed to some of my older Slipjoints it would have to be that knife.

No sweat Blues, I got thick skin. I haven't been around for awhile... didn't realize this topic had been beaten to death lol. To me I just love talking about my knives and I love hearing others speak about theirs with fondness and great memories...not to mention the fact that people keep posting to this thread anyway even though it has been done six ways to Sunday already. Whatever the thread you guys keep posting, I may not always jump in the conversation but I am always interested in how others feel about their steel.:)

It hasn't been beaten to death (afaik). And it's probably not all that easy to look for the past threads in any case. (I can only imagine how many threads some of the "keywords" would bring up.)

In any case, if the mods feel it's either off topic or needs to be merged with an existing thread it will be dealt with at that point. (Or anyone may report a post for the moderators to deal with as necessary.)

Long way of saying: "Carry on." ;)
