If you could keep only one "Traditional", what would it be?

Rick - what's the steel in that Ohta? Beautiful knife, by the way.

thx - cpr

I think with only one knife to keep, it would have to be both eminently practical and significantly meaningful.

Multiple blades, large enough and small enough to do any job and still be pocketable would satisfy the practicality.
Favored pattern and materials with excellent workmanship would satisfy the emotional attachment.

After some thought, my choice is the Tidioute Cuban Stockman, at 4-1/8" in 1095 steel and ram's horn handle.

Running a close second, with D2 steel but only 3-3/4", the RAT Railsplitter.

Those look like formidable companions. I like the swedges on both and the extra pin is nice on the scales.Rams horn tends to grip good in your hands.

One Folder: SAK Economy Huntsman

One Fixed US. Camillus Marine Corp Fighting knife.

If truly only one knife period, it would be the Camillus.

My dad bought me the Camillus when I was but a lad. THe SAK was the first pocket knife my wife bought me.

That's such a tough question. After some deliberation, I'd probably go with this Ohta:
It isn't my most expensive knife, nor is it the most versatile, but it feels so 'right' in my hand, Wharnies serve my day-to-day needs particularly well and its solid build quality is very confidence-inspiring. It feels like a knife that can stand up to a lifetime of carry and use and keep on tickin' without a hiccup.

Nice looking Ohta Rick. The picture is nice too, did you take it?

Thanks, Elliott. :)

CPR - Kama's right; ATS-34.

Thanks, Ken. I used the top of a cookie tin for that pic :D. I thought the shiny scarlet orange-peel textured paint looked interesting.

Ill keep my SAK because of that toothpick.Old Timer use to have a knife with a toothpick ,Id like to find one of those.

Y'all have been added to the tally.

The official "you can only have one" tally thread

Personally, I'd hang on to my 1997 Buck 301 stockman with its blade hardness of 59HRC and flat ground blades. It ain't the fanciest. But it's a stockman, frickin indestructible, holds a decent edge, and is easy to resharpen. I have nicer knives, but if I could only have one, this would be it.

Always a tough choice, since I love each and every one of my slippies for different reason. All things being equal, I'd probably go for my Case Soddie Jr. Feels good in hand, and I love the blade shape. A shame it's stainless, but that's what Lowe's carries.

If you could keep only one, what would it be?

After much cogitation, it would my the rusty Schrade folder that my dad used to carry, or the Queen Canoe he now carries. Sentimental thing, you know.

In terms of a real world user, though, I must conclude that I would keep a lowly Delica 4. Preferably a FFG with black FRN, which does not exist, except for the one I am about to Frankenbuild. And with a sweet, mirror edge.

The vast majority of my knife usage comes in the form of EDC. The Delica serves that role in a superior fashion. No titanium, fancy steel or high end anything. It just does what its called on to do, disappears in the pocket, and feels just right in the hand.

Difficult choice but I'd say this is the one. Even at 4" which is a tad bigger than what I'd prefer, this Joe Allen slim line trapper somehow always finds its way back into my pocket.:)

I missed the other threads but enjoyed reading this one. I think the choice for me would be my Case/Bose Dog Leg Jack. I would miss my other smaller knives that get most of the pocket time and use, SBJ especially... It is funny but as I thought about the choices, the "tactical" knives in my collection didn't really get much consideration compared to the "traditional" patterns I have.

Practical. spyderco cat carbon fiber CPM-S30V Good every day carry knife. Wished they made one in left hand and then there would be no doubt in my mind at all. But they don't.

So I suppose I have to throw out my second choice because it is a true ambidextrious, my Benchmade Mini Griptillian with the spyderco blade. Wished it were CPM-154cm but 154cm will have to do. Light knife and a good slicer for camp meals and every day cutting like the anoying hanging thread on a suit or something you know, and opening letters, ya important stuff like that.

If I had one like that it would surely be my pick. I have been looking at that knife over and over. Now that is a just right knife. Old style slip joint with a practical everything.
