If you could only carry one blade,

I am a huge fan of single bladed traditional knives with the new GEC 83 being one of my favorites, especially for office carry. I would love to have one in stainless steel.

The modified wharncliffe, however, has the best of both worlds.

...I'm going to have a knife made for me, and one of the things that I wanted in it was ease of profiling on an Edge Pro. The modified wharncliffe has it all.

Interesting thoughts regarding your selection process and intended outcome-- thanks for the further clarification.

Could you please post a picture of what you mean by a "modified" wharncliffe?

This Halfrich has a modified Wharncliffe blade, Sarah. It's shown a few posts back.

I saw that, but wasn't sure that's what he was alluding to. Thanks!

... Are you sure that's not a modified zulu spear? ;)

(Any blade is a 'modified ______' if one grinds at it enough. :D)

If only one, would need at least one locking blade or be fixed. For a folder, lockback whittler pattern like this Erickson.

For a fixed blade, stainless and old ivory micarta.

Thanks for that Gary. I would have called that a Zulu Spear blade. What is the closed length on your knife?

It's 3 5/8" Mark. Jerry calls it a small Rounder. I think the point is a little lower then the Zulu blade, a little less belly. I could be wrong though. Whatever it is I like the blade shape and find it good for most anything I do. You won't skin with it but I don't hunt anymore and used a fixed blade when I did.

I suppose it could be a modified Zulu too, Sarah! :)

PERTINUX, The modified wharncliffe has a slight bow on the edge of the blade, without an upswept tip. It's so close to a zulu spear that I think the only difference would be the lack of an upsweep. I'll see if copying and pasting a link will get a picture of what I have in mind. Some bautiful knives with this approximate blade pattern shown so far.

Here are the pictures from the post you've linked above:

I wouldn't have known to identify that blade as "wharncliffe," even with modifiers/modifications, but can now see what is meant by the descriptive.

Thanks!

Yep, it's basically a worn wharncliff ;) sorta just bringing the tip up slightly to provide that slight curve but with the tip still quite low, also one of my fav blade shapes as well !

There's a fine line (in my eyes) between a modified wharncliffe and zulu spear, and that line is often blurred. Either way it's a very useful blade.

If you can only carry one blade then send the rest to me! I can carry a lot more! ;) :D

I typically carry multi-bladed knives like Swiss army knives or stock knives so it's a difficult question for me to answer. The clip blade and sheepfoot blades are the most used blades on my stockman.

Sarah,

I think it all depends on who is doing the modifying. This Ohta also has a modified wharncliffe.

For a long time, the one-and-only knife I did carry was a Vic Classic. However, today I'd probably pick the one in the middle here:

Camillus Army Engineer's knife. But if that specific knife weren't available, I'd choose any make in the standard 4-blade camper/scout pattern.

(The fixed blade at bottom in the image — a Condor Kephart — would run a close second as the one-and-only. But I'm thinking that a pocketable blade would be more useful than the Kephart.)

Speaking of a Zulu spear, is there anyone that makes the Zulu that isn't a high end custom knife. I love the blade especially the Oesner ones so I don't understand why more people don't do them.

Yeah, what texmex03 said. :thumbup::thumbup:

Last week the clip was my first choice for an EDC blade style, though I did state that a wharncliffe, spear, lambsfoot, spey etc could all make an acceptable EDC.

This week I'd like to select the drop point as a contender for a one and only EDC blade style.

Next week the spear? As in SAK or Scout.... and then...???:D:)

To try one out, I bought a cheap clip blade knife and modified it myself, about 15 bucks and 30 minutes.

I have my Exporer Plus. It has a magnifying glass on it. It's amazing how something I never considered using before can become indispensable. I always have a SAK and if I have to carry only one, gotta be my SAK.
