If you could only carry one blade,

Gary, I reground the spey blade on my Case 6392 to the same profile as yours. I must say I really like it and find it much more useful! Will post a pic of my 1982 green bone 6392 when I get an opportunity to do so.

IF it's blade type rather than pattern...then I can't make up my mind (nor on pattern either :D ) But I suspect a fat Spear as on the GEC 85 or a stabby Spear as on the Queen Cutlery Teardrop linerlock, but then there's the Drop-point which I revere....What Laguioles have and the Leaf style blade on European knives.

Can't be done really once you know the wealth of choice:cool:

Mine is a GEC #73. Perfect size for EDC, yet stout as all get out for anything a little harder you might run into without compromising slicing ability.

So to answer your question, I like a simple drop point in full flat grind with a slightly sweeping radius and a pointy tip. I find it the most useful blade shape. Though I do love Wharnecliffes and sheepsfoot blades.

As far as steel, I don't really have a preference. Something easy to sharpen would be my top choice though.

I've not felt I was lacking for anything with my #77 Barlow with single sheepfoot. It's been my primary EDC since I received it 6 months ago.

That is one stained blade! Any pics of it opened? I would love to see some.

I would carry a clip-point blade in stainless steel. Preferably a low-carbide steel like AEB-L or the similar Sandvik steels.

Honorable mention to the Lanny's clip and Zulu blade shapes, and I am not averse to the modern CPM stainless steels either.

I carried Bucklite 422 exclusively for around 16 years(from about 1988-2004). The 422 is the lite version of the the 112 Ranger with a locking clip blade, stainless (I think 425m). It did everything from the smallest job around the house on up to all of my deer and one out west elk hunt.

I have seem to migrated to a single blade dog leg trapper. I used my scagel fruitport for my daily carry since 2012 and just recently upgraded to my a custom made by TA Davison (also a dogleg sinle bladed trapper). I really like clip point blades and I like a longer slender blades that are common in trappers. Second, I really like the feel in the hand of a dogleg style handle--they seem to fit my hand perfectly. I have tried a multi bladed trapper but they just do nothing for me as I dont find the need for a secondary blade. For some reason more than one blade kind of kills the soul of the knife for me and simply makes it a tool.

You able to share a pic? That sounds like a well-worn old friend, I love old worn knives that have seen lots of use

Here you go... In the hot summer the spine and spring of the blade where exposed in the pocket have turned nearly black - from perspiration apparently. When opened you can see the difference in the aging process. I don't force any sort of patina, I just let it age as it will through use and time.

I've changed my mind quite a few times as this question has come up but I have now decided it would be my 4 1/4" stockman.

Unfortunately no. The knife was either lost or stolen. After that I went about 8 years without even carrying any knife except when I would go hunting I have a large Old Timer stockman I would use. In 2012, I found an old Bucklite similar to my lost one and I found this forum while looking up information on that knife..............and the affliction began! Now there is no telling how many knives I have. I don't think of myself as a collector, I'm just always on the lookout for the perfect knife and along the way, I come across some that are no longer made or in new condition with a box and papers so I put them away so I don't hurt their value, so now I guess I have a collection. I might someday go back to the simplicity of the old Bucklite(I think I have around 7 in my non-collection).
I have been carrying a 6318 Case stockman for 7 weeks straight.

For me it would be the Victorinox Trekker. There isn't much that can't be done with this knife.
