If you had 3

Fallkniven F1 w. firesteel.
Tarp or plastic sheath.
Swedish army mess tin (it is one thing when assembled and the wind shield is pointless if you dont use the spirit burner so I leave that) or a Trangia food container with handle or a Trangia coffee pot.
I can carry stuff in the mess tin :)

You could actually just do it with a good folder and a firesteel, and hang it around your neck. Maybe a scout firesteel and a Fallkniven U2.

Two things for me: a toothbrush and a butane lighter. Admittedly, I'd be pretty busy for a couple of days making tools, foraging for shelter/food/cordage materials, but having easy fire would be a real luxury. The first thing I'd make is an lightweight axe and a spear or two. Then I'd burn a water container out of a chunk of wood, and while that was going, I'd throw up a small debris shelter. Proper clothing and shoes are such a good survival kit all by themselves, that if you only add in a fire source, I be well ahead of the game. The main thing I am thinking about all of the time are all of the situations where it seems to be necessary for me to hand over knives, matches, etc.. So I've asked myself, what is the single most important thing to me (whether in the woods or airport) besides clothing, and I kept coming up with fire as the answer. And long before a week has gone by, I'm going to be miserable if I can't brush my teeth, so I'll add a toothbrush in there too. YMMV. Cheers.

Tough choice, but here's what I'd want.

Some sort of metal pot
Locking multi-tool with saw/ferro rod
Tarp

Motorhome ,hot tub and Tia Carrare

Seriously though assuming I have good boots and warm clothes already I would want some snare wire. a good knife ,probably the Skookum bush tool that should be here in my grubby little hands in about 5 hours and some method of starting a fire. Probably just a good lighter.

Now I am going to cheat a bit and say that I have my little PSK I got from my bestus buddy Roo that has a survival blanket ,fatwood ,mini ferrocromium rod and some snare wire. I am going to also add some water purification tabs and a nonlubricated condom.

Add to that the SBT knife(I am so stoked it is like XMass morning) and the canteen with belt pouch and metal cup I also got from Roo and I am not only going to survive I will probably be comfortable doing it.

OK I am going to cheat even more and stick the PSK kit in with the canteen.

Now I can take a wool blanket and even be warm. With the wool and the emergency blanket from the PSK ,some rabbit for dinner from the snare ,some fresh clean water
and a roaring fire I will be camping not just surviving.

Maybe i should toss some instant coffee and some salt ,pepper packets in the PSK?

a Mora or "tollekniv" w/firesteel
a small fishing-kit
a small billy-can

on second thought, I'd ditch the billy-can and bring some baby-wipes instead... Seven day's with moss for t.p. is not for me:D

Taken literally, the 3 items for me would be:

1) Knife
2) Ferro-Rod
3) Guyot stainless bottle

Fortunately I don't believe in a fair fight and if you're not cheating, you're not trying hard enough:D So, with that said:

1) Knife/sheath system would include:

Ratweiler with Spec-Ops sheath with:
SAK Outrider
Ferro-Rod
Sharpener

2) My water "system" (ala Bear:D) would have a shoulder bag with NATO canteen, steel cup, stove stand and I just received a nice canteen cup lid stamped out of aluminum (need to to take some pictures); also includes a bottle of Polar Pure, snare wire and a small hank of 550 cord.

3) Silponcho (toss up between this and a wool blanket)

Of course I wouldn't count my clothing as an "item", but depending on the season, this is where I would rely on wool, such as my Swanndri Bush shirt and a good soft shell or even my Barbour waxed cotton Border jacket (the longer version); quality leather boots and wool socks...don't forget the hat and scarf and probably a pair of my convertible pants and leather gloves:D Oh, a good synthetic T-shirt, Smartwool zip-neck long sleeve shirt and a quality synthetic 7-button long sleeve shirt (5.11 makes a great one)...

Yeah, that would do for my "3" items:thumbup:

Wow there is an awful lot of nakid' people with no boots running around the woods these days:eek:

1) A good fixed blade knife(RC4)
2) A magnesium fire starter(Doan)
3) A stainless steel pot

Gotta say I'd have to echo everyone else and go for the things I can't make easily.

Knife.
Firesteel.
Metal water container.

For the knife I might go with the SAK Farmer due to the saw being useful in shelter building.

If you can count the knife/firesteel as one item I'd add a sil poncho to the list.

Well, I'm going to ASSUME we're clothed for the season. Although being in FL, I probably could get away with running around nekkid in Oct.

Since it was one of the rules that a firesteel on your knife sheath is one item. . .

1.) BRKT Aurora w/firesteel

2.) I'd LIKE to have a GI canteen w/cup and stove (since it all fits in one container it might be considered one item. If not, a Guyot stainless bottle. With the water down here, you HAVE to boil it if you can't filter it, and it's much nicer to carry water in a bottle than in a pot or billy can.

3.) A length of spiderwire or 550 cord. Shelter is easy to make with palmetto fronds, but cordage I have no skill at all making.

pretty much what everyone else was saying...
buck nighthawk
a metal container
poncho

Oh I kept making the argument that most of the knives I carry have a ferro rod attached so I consider that 1 item. They said no but since I started this thread it counts:D

So I'll go first. I'm in New England, I would feel comfortable with My Fiddleback large bushy/ferro rod, Guyot 32oz bottle, and a poncho.

So whats your 3?

C'mon bro I count 4 there ! We are obviously like minded in our choices but as I only picked 3 I opted to go without the knife !:(

Hey, the OP set the rules, and he said it was OK.

Psst, Get a sheath with a firesteel loop, then you can have both.

If I were to do like you though, I think I would opt for a Bic instead of the rod if I couldn't have a knife. Since the Bic doesn't need a striker. But, I'm sure you could always find something sharp enough to strike a firesteel.

P.S. I forgot to state were I would be in my first post. I would most likely be in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, that's why I opted for the sleeping bag, because it could be sunburn hot during the day, wearing shorts and a t-shirt, then it can drop to freezing at night.

Hey! I thought a lot of you guys were cheating. I missed where tony said you could have a firesteel, so, even though I do friction fire, that would be my third/fourth choice.

Now we're talking luxury. :D

hmmm...wet coast (actually the Mainland) of BC:

- Husky 3120 XP chainsaw
- 25 liters of 50:1 pre mix gas
- 25 liters bar oil

with the chainsaw i could fell and slab a LOT of big cedars, and build a nice dry cedar shingled cabin, and have firewood too. I could use the hot muffler to ignite gas soaked woodchips to light a fire, once going its easy to keep going. To gather food i could chainsaw thru the cabin doors of the summer people and loot their dry goods and freezers ( alot of them leave food in their freezers all year....) beer too, whatever i could find,.........heck the possibilities are endless....I could fell trees into a creek and dam it, trapping fish in the pool, make a old time water trough and pipe water into the cabin for cold refreshing showers and water.........all that cedar bark can be pounded down and made into blankets, sleeping pads and garments, and rope.......rope to make snares (ah i'd just make a big deadfall and eat bear!

I like your thinking. Were I in that kind of area, I honestly think the chainsaw isn't that crazy of an idea, if you don't limit yourself to hand tools for survival.

Back here in the almost treeless plains of Nebraska, though, I'd probably go with this list:

Knife/firesteel (Breeden Pathfinder)
Stainless bottle or pot
Sleeping bag or poncho/tarp depending on the season.

Tossin' in my two cents here, but it's a little redundant!

-knife + ferro rod (Vic Farmer, rucksack, or BRKT Aurora, Kephart)
-Guyot bottle
-nylon tarp (maybe a gi poncho)
