I have these two knives that I'm just dying to use, but I know I'll probably regret it because they're fairly rare. If you had these, would you use them or keep them in pristine condition to retain their value?

I see them both as users. Are your purposes for owning them purely to flip? If so put them in a nice cozy place in your safe and wait till you think there value is high enough. If you bought them to keep.....well the answer is fairly obvious.
 
Are you a knife collector or a knife user that has collectible knives?

I always fall into the later camp, generally if I get a knife that is too pretty to use I trade it.

So in reference to your particulars, I would beat the sh*t out of the SYK and trade the Spydie.
 
It would depend upon each person's thoughts and circumstances as well as the reason for the purchase to begin with.

In my case, my thought is they are factory knives, of course I will use them. In other peoples cases, they would not dream of using them. There is no right way or wrong way when it comes to use or put up. Do what is right for you.

How much money do you have? Can you buy a second hand one to use? Rareness aside, if you want to keep them pristine, don't use them. Do you have similar knives that you can use? Are those two filling a niche in your user line-up, that is void of a user?
I own one wakizashi, it's from Swamp Rat. They don't make them anymore, but they were made to be used. So, I use it. At any time I could have it stripped, convexed, and polished. That alone would add to the value, at least to somebody, and I still would have got to use it.

Besides, time will tell how rare or collectable something is, and there will always be better knives, better steel, and more collectables.

I have a few knives that I don't use. Most are older inherited knives, I don't want to damage or loose those. A few others were limited runs and I bought two of them, one is a user the other will be someday.
 
Para 2 S90V is the only modern folder I've carried since I got it...use it!!
 
Use them. You'll get more satisfaction out of using them than you would looking at them every so often in the safe.
 
If you are dying to use them...then use them. I have knives I use and knives I don't use....I don't believe there is anything wrong with either.

Thing is...you gotta put them in the category you feel strongly about. If you are dying to use one of your safe queens...it should be one of your users.
 
I think the hardest thing for me to swallow is knowing that there are so few of them made. Even though they are just production knives, if you were to want another one it's not like you can just go out there and buy another one on a whim. And when you do find another one, the price is inflated up the wazoo.

I hold the same belief as some of you guys that a good knife is meant to be used, but at the same time they are like an endangered species. I'll probably carry the s90v and not use it, and I'll definitely need to think hard about using the SY muk. It's nice to hear all of your inputs.
 
I always trade or sell anything rare. I am a collector by nature but I use my knives. So I end up wanting the rare ones but not using them, then because I'm not using them, off they go.
 
use them both, those are user knives. and every knife you get is a new knife, just got my CB leek today and it will be my edc for a month or 2 :p

I didn't use my cf s90v manix 2 up untill 2 months ago, you'll love the S90v on the spydie, holds it's edge for 2 month's of my edc use :p

That's how I was for a long time. Finally narrowed it down to less than 10 knives that all get carried and used... except a pair of 2001 MT UT6p/s that are our engagement knives... too broke for a ring! I traded this (see vid) for the 2 MTs and a NIB BM Infidel.

If I had that paramilitary, I'd use the hell out of it. The fixed blade, probably not, but that's just cuz I wouldn't have much use for it.
 
Heck yes. The fixed blade looks great for batoning and chopping and the Spyderco would be a great EDC.
