If you only had $50 to buy a folder knife, what would you get (new or used)?

Funny you should ask as I recently made a purchase in that budget range.

I got my CRKT M16Z for $53 and while its not super pretty I am greatly enjoying it so far. Solid construction, not the worst steel in the world, and the double locking system seems fairly strong. I'd not use it to try and pry open a door. :)

I would buy at least 2 or 3 knives for $50.

Right now I'm looking at a
Case Texas jack ($35)
Boker Plus Lockback ($15)
Oceoo River barlow ($13)
Chief Peanut ($10)
Navy K611 ($16)
Victorinox black Cadet ($27)
Kanekoma Higonokami blue steel ($17)
Leatherman Squirt PS4 ($24)

1. buck vantage pro
2. griptilian
3.endura or delica

these might cost an extra $10 dollars, but you ll be glad you spent the money.

I got my Benchmade 15020 for $50 on these forums so if I were you I'd have a look in the knife exchange for something you really really want.

Any general ideas of what you're looking for? Modern or traditional? Larger or smaller knife? Big & beefy knife, or something more compact and light? Any other attributes (opening mechanisms, lock types, etc.).

Some generic recommendations would be:
Vic SAK (any of the 2 or 3 layer models with a tool set you like)
Kershaw Leek, Blur, or Skyline
Spyderco Delica or Endura
Benchmade Mini-Griptilian or Griptilian
Ontario RAT-I or RAT-II

Many of those can be found new for under $50. The Spydercos and Benchmades occasionally pop up on the exchange for under $50 as well.

I might go with a Kershaw Blur (blem or used is okay, though I've seen new ones for around $50 at times). If I could manage to find a used S30V one, then even better (I've seen it but have never bitten). My first brand was Kershaw and I've never had a Blur which is one of their ubiquitous models. It seems like a nice size balance - big enough to get some larger work done but also small enough for some finer work (except for maybe detailed point work... its general shape looks more slicey than pokey or razor-like like the Leek is for example).

This is almost exactly what I was thinking. I do have certain things I would prefer were different about it, but I think if I had to get just one, it would be a Blur in S30V, probably have to be used at that price.

Has anyone mentioned Byrd brand? They at the working mans brand from spyderco. I have had one for years and while not as nice as more expensive golders you more than get what you pay for and they are solid and sturdy.

I agree with the blur option. Great knife.

Either a boker plus nano, a little small but i really enjoy it overall. Or for 10 bucks more you could go with the H&K conspiracy. great knife for the price. Or like everyone else has said a delica.

Well, it depends on what you're needing it for. Are you wanting a knife for regular EDC? Are you wanting something for possible self-defense? Do you have any requirements on blade length or weight? Is assisted opening okay, or a no-go?

For general EDC use, you have a lot of good options. Kershaw, Buck, the Ka-bar Dozier, the Ontario Rat 1-2, and the cheaper CRKT Ripple model can each be had for $20-30. Any of these options still leaves $20-30 that you could use to buy an SAK of some sort, or a couple of Opinels, or go out to eat, or whatever.

If you're looking for something more "self-defense" oriented, the Cold Steel Large Voyager lineup can be had for around $40-45, even the XL versions sometimes show up for $50.

CKRT 21-02G - all my other knives are higher end but I always end up using the 21 for most tasks. Love that folder.
