Just bought a couple of knives here and they were shipped immediately...that's good.

They also REEK of cigarette smoke. My house smells like it now. I'm not overly sensitive to cigarette smoke, I've gigged for the last 20 years in clubs filled with smoke....I used to smoke. These knives STINK!

When I contacted the seller to let them know of this, they said "It should fade quickly." I let them know that they should let buyers know that the knives they sell are going to reek of cigarettes and they come back with "OK."

2 knives....$684 and this is the response?

If you smoke and keep your property in that environment, your property is going to stink of cigarettes. It's gonna bite you on the ass at some point.

Yep, totally understand where your coming from. I used to smoke also and now I think that my ability to notice the smell now is even higher than before I ever smoked. It is amazing how one small item from the home of a smoker can stink like all get out when brought into a non smoking environment.

You should post a BF username so any buyers know ahead of time for future dealings

Well, my goal is for people that smoke (and can no longer make a reasonable judgement about how something smells) may read this and take the appropriate action in their ads.

I haven't asked for a return/refund and haven't been denied. I don't think that naming names is appropriate. This is just a pain I shouldn't have had to deal with or at least should have been aware of before buying.

Cant you just wash them? Maybe a little grunge off or mineral oil.

Maybe, cigarette smoke is tenacious...maybe it would help, maybe not. How we gonna get it out of the leather? I bought a smoky leather jacket when it was in my 20s and it still smelled like smoke when I sold it 10 years later.

This is missing the point though.....be honest with your ads. Care about the buyer when they express concern/dissatisfaction with what they received.

I know that smokers can be surprised that the stuff they ship stinks.....they shouldn't be at this point.

The only thing worse than tobacco smoke's smell is the smell of pot.
I don't care what people do in their houses or apartments as long as I don't have to smell it :barf:

I once won a "like new/rarely used" $$$ wool blanket from the big auction site. It arrived looking like the person's dog used it as a doggie bed for a long time.
Back it went.
Pet owners can be like smokers in that way. They are no longer able to see the hair or smell the stink.

Curious as well...what kind of knives hold cig stink this long and stink up your own home? Leath er handled or something that would hold smells?

Well, the OP did say they have leather. Sheaths I assume. A box will pick up smells too.

It's funny, I never thought this could be a possibility with knives.

Both knives have canvas micarta scales and one knife has a leather sheath.

The box that the knives were shipped in was packed with newspaper that absolutely dripped with smell of cigarettes.

I have them packed in a box right now, wrapped in a paper towel and then wrapped with dryer sheets. They'll spend plenty of time off gassing in the garage and sunlight when the weather gets better.

As I said, it's a pain. I'd like the smell gone.....I'd really like to have known about it going in...I may have waited on a less stinky pair.

I received a knife that smelled like cigaret smoke . I didn't want to offend the member so I never told him . So what I did stuck a fabric softener tissue in the box and took it to attic hopefully that take care of the smell . What's bad is that I don't care for the knife and I don't want to posted on the trade forum because how it smell .

I agree naming the member does no good . Take this thread as a learning experience . When I buy or trade here I always ask how is the blade centering, blade play, scratches and now I ask if it comes from a smoke free home . I hate to do it because some people don't understand that none smokers hate the smell of cigaret smoke .

I stopped by my friends knife shop with the knives today....husband and wife team and the wife smokes.......she was admiring one of the knives and SHE said, "Wow, this really smells like cigarettes." Unprompted.

People need to face it...if they smoke, they're simply not capable of judging how bad the smell is.

NEVER act indifferent or dismissive of your buyer. I was trying to give information that will be important to them on future deals.

I have had a a couple of knives come smelling of smoke as well. Once I got rid of the packaging and let them sit for a couple of days the smell on the smoke dissipated. I did contact the person with my concerns and they basically gave me the same answer as you. I think people should let others know if there is a chance of the item that they are selling smelling of smoke.

I heat treat knives for other makers and I can immediately tell when I open the package if the customer is a smoker. I immediately dispose of all the packing material. The blades don't usually smell or not bad anyway. Any smell definitely gets burned off in the furnace during H/T.
If the materials the knives are made of will not be ruined i suggest that you clean them with something like "Gun Scrubber" and re-oil them. As far as the sheath I would put it in a well ventilated area and in the sunshine if at all possible. A few days and it should freshen up and get back to normal. You could also do a light wipedown with denatured alcohol and re-oil the leather with some Neatsfoot oil, if you have some.
