If you smoke, the knife you sell is gonna smell bad......

After reading this thread I think it would be proper of me to mention my chronic gas in each sales write up. Thx

I just caught some crap in my sale thread when I stated my knives come from a non-smoking household. This thread was referenced for clarification which is fair because this thread is the reason I brought it up. :foot:

I smoke, but smoking inside is just stupid. You stain your walls and all your posessions will reak. I also recieved a knife (cold steel boar hunter) that reeks of cigarettes. I think rubbery materials soak it up the most.

Rhinoman,
I just had he same thing happen with some knives I had a new sheath maker build some sheaths for me and I almost passed out when I opened the box. I never smoked, Tobacco that is, But its been awhile since I have gone into a real smokey place since there is no smoking in most buildings here in California. PHEW! I emailed him as said please wash your hands before you pack any heathes for me next time. I tell people on my ebay and other listings that I am a non smoker. Most appreciate that. except for the few in your face smokers.

I have gotten more sensiteve to Tobacco smoke as the years roll by so you are not alone.

AH, the smells some people live with and are desensitized to them. My wife has a friend who smokes 3 packs daily, has 4 cats and a dog. She is a slob, it is so bad in her home that the one time I stepped in I gagged. The cats spray and do their business where they want, the dog is so bad is even poops and pees in her bed. But it does not bother her. Well, she started a home business and the things she made were gorgeous with one problem, they stunk to holy heaven. Many of the pieces of work she sold and shipped were returned due to stink and she could not understand.
Her husband inherited a brand new snowmobile suit that clearly did not fit him. After sitting around their home he decided to give it to me as a gift. As soon as I took it out of the back it not only reeked but hundreds of fleas started jumping all over the place. I hung it outside for three weeks in the freezing cold and then brought it to the dry cleaners. No matter what they did it still stunk. I promptly donated a top of the line complete snow mobile suit to goodwill. I knew some homeless guy would stay warm this winter but stink to all that came near him. The moral of the story; keep your home cigarette and animal stink free!!!

I'm sure you're referencing me. I apologize for asking a question on your sale thread, I'm new to the forum and hadn't quite read the rules. I feel like you misunderstood what I meant, however. I was asking because I hadn't heard that being an issue before, and was curious if that was something I needed to look out for. However, I think it's a little strange you carried my question to another thread. Did it actually irk you that much?

Should sellers also inform customers of their diets? Curry stinks to high heaven. So does any kind of fish. And those odors linger far longer than smoke.

I can relate to this. I've purchased two things that arrived absolutely reeking of cigarette smoke. The first one was a bull snake, and the box smelled before I even opened it. The smell lingered on the snake for months. The other was a guitar valued at approx $700. I picked up the package at FedEx, and couldn't stand to be in my truck by the time I'd traveled the 3.5 miles to my house. It was intended as a gift...I warned the person, and he said it wouldn't matter; but he ended up getting rid of it a couple months later because he couldn't get the smell out of it.

I know you shouldn't have to but instead of baking soda. What about cat litter with deodorizer. I don't have cats but when I was making liquid glass. I had trouble finding the right kind that was odorless. Seems they all had some sort of odor neutralizer.

I've tried several methods suggested here and there has been improvement. Both knives are fine as is the kydex sheath but the leather sheath still smells horrible. At least it doesn't fill the house but if I leave it in a room, uggghh....

I'm going to give the professionals a chance to tackle this as long as it's cost effective. Otherwise, the beautiful leather Armorall sheath is out of here.

Thank you again for so many helpful posts.

When you have tried everything else send it to me and I'll treat it just for the challenge.

All you need pay for is shipping.

I certainly understand how this is irritating, but it's not an issue of deliberate misconduct. Many smokers simply don't realize how badly their habit stinks EVERYTHING up.

I was foolish enough to leave some camping gear in my parents house while I was in college. They are both heavy smokers and I do not smoke. Fast forward 10 years and all of a sudden I wanted to retrieve and use some of the gear. If you think a couple pocket knives smell bad imagine what a sleeping bag that has been bathing in smoke for 10 years smells like? It's been through a thorough washing, weeks of airing outside and it still has a faint odor to it. My parents response? I am being "overdramatic" and I'm "crazy" because it's "impossible that it smells like anything after all that washing and airing". Who knew?

Good luck with your knives, but chances are the seller (just like my parents) simply doesn't understand how offensive it is to 95% of the population -and they never will "get it".
