If you were buying a Bowie knife?

Have you looked at the knives up for "Best Bowie"? If not, go do so; it's in the "Custom Knives" forum. Some of those are reasonable, so less so, it kind of depends on the budget.

I'm pretty happy with my Phillip Patton. It cost less than some of the others already mentioned in this thread.

i forgot this one. 13" blade, sharp 'false' edge... now, THAT's intimidating.

HI makes some reasonable replicas.

Randall Smithsonian Bowie for me.

I sure wouldn't turn down a 12-8 BBB though.

If price was no object I too would go for a Busse Battle Pappy. However my Busse Basic 10 does everything I can ask for out a large blade.

I would love a CS Natchez in san mai, but I would have to put a custom guard and stag handle on. As a close second, my CS Loredo that I put a stag on and a forced patina, I love it so much!

For a production bowie I would say a Cold Steel Trail Master is as good as anything out there. I would also recommend that you get it in carbon steel as the san mai iii is about a hundred dollars more and not worth it. Imho

Or you could get the almost identical 440 steel MTECH 151 for $30...

Fixed !

Have you ever seen a Coldsteel Canadian? It's a direct copy of a Grohman, except that they'd changed the wood for a crappy piece of plastic:

They also tried to make the Pendleton Hunter look as much like a Fallkniven F1 as they could without having a protruding tang - because that would say "Use me as a chisel", and CS don't even warranty their knives for batoning. Really: someone who rips off a scumbag isn't a scumbag. (Aka the "Omar LIttle Principle.) "It's not like the TM is an especially original piece of work - but the Grohman is and they provide good jobs in an area that needs them. There really isn't a brand that it is more ridiculous to be a fanboi of than ColdSteel - except possibly Broken River Knives - and there isn't a more ridiculous issue to raise in their defense than this one!

Bagwell, the day I win the lottery. (I'd even consider one of the Ontario models, despite the substandard steel, if I could find one I thought was worth the price... for $2-300 I can build the dang thing myself, and use better steel) 8" Randall #1 is on my list, too.

I do own a TM in CarbonV and have no plans on getting rid of it. The newer ones in SK5 are probably the best deal going at $150 or so.

Yes, I've used a Cold Steel Canadian, I know about copies and I'm certainly not defending Cold Steel. :)

I have a TM in CarbonV Made in the US of A. Jerry Fisk put a convex edge on it for me too. I'm lovin' it.

Then I stand on the Omar Little Principle: the 151 is an excellent knife and it costs $30 instead of $150. If you want a knife to actually use rather than decorate your wall, and don't need something as close to bomb-proof as a Busse, it's the logical buy. It's just a shame that MTECH didn't have the wit to fix the TM's idiotic and pointless faults when they copied it - like making the choil a usable size, adding a handle that won't fail and suddelny release the blade while chopping, and that silly symmetrical Mall Ninja guard that stops you from getting your finger into the choil comfortably. It's all dremelable though, and much more forgiveable on a $30 knife than a $150 one. To be fair, the grind on the MTECH is said to be an improvement, and the guard is probably better fitted.

Just found out that one of my best buds uncle is a custom knife maker by the name of Aaron Wilburn. After looking at his site, that's the way I'd throw my money.

Have: Busse FBM Bowie

Want: Dervish Tribal Bowie, ANY Matt Lamey, Randall Smithsonian and Randall Confederate.

If it was going to be a hard use knife, I'd choose the Von Tempsky replica Bowie made by Svord of New Zealand.
