If you're on the fence about a bk15...

I love mine. The 16 is a great bushcraft knife, but for me the 15 is perfect EDC. I don't keep it on my person but its always close by. For one thing, it has a fear factor that's useful for anyone who wants to walk up on your vehicle and two, its very slicey and handy for anything knifey oriented while riding around. I drive a lot for work.

NCSlice,

What buschcraft tasks would the 16 handle better than the 15? Or is it just your preference when it comes to those chores? One of the reasons I love the upswept design of the 5 and 15 is their resemblance to traditional European knives of the 16-18 centuries. Cutting, slicing, fighting, and chopping were all tasks of, say, the Spanish colonial belduque, many of which had a very butcher-knife look and feel to them. As many were straight, Mediterranean dirk-styled, but the very thick examples are reminiscent of the BK-5.

What the 9 lacks, in my view, is the choil cutout for choking up. Just my stinky opinion. :o

Anyway, it's a tool for the toolbox. No one knife can do it all, I suppose.

zeig: I just emailed you. I want to make scales for a 15 to match my 5:

I don't have much experience with either but, so far, the 16 would handle batoning a bit better due to the 15's swedged spine. But the 15's extra 1" of blade and finger choil are so much nicer.

If you go back and reread my post, I never said it was better..
My intent was not to argue 15vs16 but in fact states my favoritism towards the 15.

So I've looked and looked at the 15 and I think I've talked myself into it (I'm good at that). Anyone know where the good sale prices are? I see Dex is out of stock. Please email me if its not cool to post that info here.

I read you loud and clear, for sure. I was just curious what your experiences were. Looking for for food for thought was all. I look forward to giving mine a workout next week.

Yessir, gotcha. I was really going by what I've seen and read about it as my 16 just arrived yesterday. But I'm with you brother, big fan of the 15. I'll be adding a couple more soon thanks to you!

You guys are nothing but a bunch of bad influences and damn enablers! The 15 & 5 weren't even on my radar, now I'm considering both. Thanks a lot, I should have taken up crystal meth, its cheaper!

I wanted to keep things simple for awhile. Thought I might pick up an 11 with some micarta scales, maybe get some micarta to try on my 7 or 9. Then I start reading about all the great deals on the 15, and how it might go away so I start thinking maybe I should look into one of those. Looking at 15's got me looking at 5's, and damn it! Now I want them both! Plus the 11 & the micarta!

Thanks to you guys I bought a 5 and 15 about 4 days ago….and then I bought another 15 just now… you guys are terrible influences.

This gang around here is much more than a group of enablers; they are actually inspirers!

Well, I did it, ordered a 5, & 11, & 15 (backordered), & micarta for the 11, & large micarta, & a fire rod just for the hell of it. What a pile of money. I feel dirty, and giddy. I need a shower, and a beer, but I'm at work and they frown on doing either or both of those things here.

Got mine yesterday, four days early. Wore it to do barn chores and it cuts like a champ. That coating is ROUGH but I'll leave it on for now. Sharpest out of the box knife I've had in a long time. Sheath is a bit tactical for my everyday use, but I was able to jam a SOG Paratool and Maglite Solitaire in the outboard pouch. Update: Slid a Buck EdgeTek flat pocket stone behind the multitool and flashlight. With effort I could get a firesteel in there, too. I wasn't able to throw sparks on an old cheapo firesteel I had sitting around, but I think I just need to clear a patch of the spine of some blade coating. Others' experiences?

Someone called the 15 a big robust Mora. I can see that.

Thanks, enablers!

Since this post, I also sanded the blade surface. The roughness of the coating was too much for me. Here's the full kit so far:

WV,

I did the same thing. I rationalized what those thin trailing point knives weren't as practical as the other designs and then the forum members inspired me to buy a 5 & 15 for the same reasons you did. I'm very glad I did as there are no other knives anything like them and certainly not for the almost giveaway prices. Bk15 gets used everyday for kitchen duty but I'm thinking of stripping it to let it reach its full slaser potential. Enjoy it and have a few more beers!

Of all the Beckers I own, my 15 gets the most carry time. Its probably my favorite fixed blade for general use. You guys that are buying your 1st will be very pleased!
