I'm a cheap machete slut

Well, that certainly is different, if you feel you are getting your money's worth from them, great. As I said before, enjoy.

And, of course it is the mod's decision if telling us what black Friday deals nonsupporting sites are offering constitutes a deal spot.

As a hint, the business in question is a major online seller of military surplus.

I didn't recognize it (but I did recognize who "the bud" was he mentioned buying from)...but the OP seems comfortable that is was not a deal spot and discussing their "shipping free" black Friday deals was fine and not promoting them.

It's not like we have supporting members who sell machetes and other items at great prices and deserve promotion. ;)

As I recall, I believe I get that Bud catalog in the mail. To think some people say that they never look at a printed catalog. It's kind of fun to cruise through some of these "mail order" catalogs. You clearly don't get the tunnel vision inherent with online shopping.

Did you read the deal spotting rule? I quoted it verbatim sans the first sentence which really doesn't apply. Even the "rule" doesn't say squat about posting links. So, maybe the rule needs revised or clarified, because I didn't post a link and certainly am not a dealer.

Also, this is what a mods (knarfeng) warning was to me when I was warned early in my time here.

"Please do not post links to auctions, deals, bargains or other offsite promotions. Dealers who want to advertise are encouraged to purchase a Dealer membership, paid subscriptions keep BladeForums.com open."

Sounds like a great deal, both my machetes were $15 each which is still a good deal for what I got.
What I got were imicasa machetes made for marbles which came sharp, with a nice orange coating as well as a decent nylon sheath and sharpening stone.
I really would love to get one of these machete assortments some day.
I'd try out the different patterns, keep the one I wanted most then give the others to relatives who could make use of them.

Imacasa makes better machetes than Gavilan. Gavilan's no slouch compared to Chinese garbage machetes, but Imacasa is pretty much the kind of "cheap" working-man's machetes.

Me too! Although my favorite is the ESEE Lite machete, its much cheaper cousin (Imacasa 12") gets used most.

Damn. I just paid about $40 for a Kershaw 18” machete. I feel ripped off now!

IMHO I think you should, I'm no expert I'd say the best machetes come from the countries where they most use and depend on them.
These machetes are not really made by knife companies and don't see marketing at blade show...ect, they're found laying in the back of trucks, hanging in sheds, and in garages next to the garden tools they're sold alongside at hardware stores.

What you say is true, but machetes that are often marketed here in the US are sort of boutique machetes. They tend to be a bit more refined than those sold in Central and South America. Are they worth the extra cost? That is something each person has to decide for themselves. I know how you and Panoz77 feel. I feel a little differently, but not to the point of being interested in something sold by say Bark River....

I love machetes , both cheap and not so . The thread title sounds like an X-rated Quentin Tarantino movie that I'd need to watch !

For the record I wasn't referring to Condor.
I was referring to Gerber, schrade, Kershaw, and SOG...ect.

I don't own a machete that I carried and never used. I have ones that I have never carried and are still new. Machetes to me are just cutting tools. If I wanted to use one of the new ones, I would with no regrets.

I guess with plain Jane Imacasa's out there for $4-6.50, I would never even consider a $70 Esee Lite to beat on. Steel is the same, but the Esee is just prettier, coated blade, probably a factory edge, Esee logo and new removable micarta handle material and a codura sheath. Probably easily $65 of upgrades, but still the same old steel chopping into dirt and rocks trying to chop out those pricker bushes.

There must be an import trade imbalance from El Salvador.

"...but still the same old steel chopping into dirt and rocks trying to chop out those pricker bushes." That be true. You have to give ESEE credit for trying.

Some sort of machete is on my shopping list but it is very low on my list. I don't know enough about them to make an educated decision. Anyone know of a website that offers info for those of us that are machete impaired? Something like a Machete 101 class.

I bought 2 bolo’s from him (1 for me, 1 for my Filipina mother in law), and paid a little extra for the special grade- well worth it. Both came to me hair-shaving sharp.

There's the machete specialist site but I don't know if they simply sell or can guide you on what pattern you need.

If you just need something for weeds...ect and other landscaping tasks around your yards then I'd suggest an 18" latin machete, either made by imicasa or Tramontina, if you want something that comes sharpened and with a sheath I'd suggest the marbles version of imicasa machete for $15.
Beyond that if you're in the market for something to use recreationally in the woods I wouldn't know.
