These two days has put a couple years to my age.

I ordered some supplies from USA but my money is lost during transaction, bank says it is gone, shop owner says I don't have it.
I ordered a huge amount of steel (D2) from a company in Istanbul, they dont reply back or phone back, when I phone them they say the person dealing with the order is not here etc.
Ordered some other things (woods, steel, hardware etc) of total 4 different companies. Similar problems with them....
My custom orders are waiting, I'm trying to complete some knives before mid-december to Camel Fair at town.... Reed knife orders waiting from Spain, yatagan orders are there sitting for supplies......

I'm real depressed now, nothing works, I got money in my pocket but I cant pay it to anyone....

Sorry for whining, I'm messed up. Wanted a shoulder to cry on....

SAR, since he's in Turkey, dealing with a steel supplier in Turkey is probably SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than dealing with a company in the states and paying international shipping half way around the world + export duties + import duties + taxes etc.

Did you get any transaction numbers for the transactions to the states that seem to have gone missing? There should be a trail somewhere.

The Bank is legally responsible for the transaction.Insist they fix the problem, not you.Remember, your the paying customer of the Bank.Call Istanbul and insist on talking to a manager,if he doesnt help ask for his boss, and etc until you get an explanation. If you havent paid, cancel the order, also many credit card companies will allow you to cancel a trasaction after the purchase for the right reasons.then get some frome Crucible or the likes.Sometimes saving money by ordering stuff all over place isnt worth it.Most of the time it ends up costing more if you add up the down time. The major supply companies may be a little more expensive but most have excellent customer service and are American companies.I tried to save money by buying so called stabilzed scales and blocks off flea-bay from a co with 100% 2year approval rating and when I received them they were crap.I should have ponyed up the money for WSSI.Its like tools, buy great tools once, cry once.

SAR, galadduin lives in Turkey. Sorry to hear about your problems. I ordered and paid for a side of leather from a company here in the good old USA and it never came and all the phones are now no longer in service. I had 2 pieces of damascus and some nickel disappear in the mail here in the USA, sometimes it happens. Most of the time it works out. Lets hope your just getting all your bad luck out of the way at once.

Thanks guys,
I have changed my tone of voice lately, it works I guess. The main problem of the Turkish companies is they are used to deal with large firms not private people like me. It got real ugly with some major steel exporters in Turkey, I found myself shouting their sales staff : "don't you want my money !!!" etc... Every time they ask "which firm you are calling from".

For the last tries I changed my strategy, calling as a very important and popular artist :D This seem working... Now I've managed to order a half plate (3.2 ft X 3.2 ft) 3.5 mm (~0.14") thick D2 :wow:. It is thin I know but I mainly use it for kitchen knives... For thicker ones I plan to order some A2...

I'm chasing the lost money but I assume it is lost. I know the shop owner and I trust him as he is Tracy... It is something the bank messed up I guess (it is HSBC bank)...

The woods are coming from galleryhardwoods.com. I really recommend Larry, he is real pleasure to deal with. He is knowledgeable and his approach is friendly....

I've sent an email to alphaknifesupply.com for about 5 or 6 feet of steel (CPM 154, 440C and S30V). My main concern is I have to have at least a couple of steel kinds to offer my customers. As I am mainly experienced in Air hardening steels and D2 is not rated as stainless and it is not tough as ie. S30V I want to offer a choice between relatively cheap blade out of D2 or much more expensive knife but better performer... I wait for reply from AKS. I'm worried the shipment cost though...

All in all my bad luck is diminishing I hope, with some real hard effort....

Knife making is way way easy comparing to buying knife making supply in Turkey. My head aches because of all day long phone calls...
Thanks for your support guys...

Hey, I forgot to say this giant D2 took only 300$ for me. I cannot imagine what would cost me if I've ordered that amount from USA :D I guess a couple thousand dollars at least ....

I failed to note that.......maybe just one more cup of coffee before I turn this thing on:D

Apparently, as if knifemaking wasn't challenging enough, those of us in Eastern Europe (it is Eastern Europe isn't it? *ignorant American*) also have to deal with trouble finding materials.

I think it is cool we have a regular here from Turkey. Gives the forum a bit more of an international flavor.

Hey Emre, sorry to hear of your troubles. Hope it works out.

I sent you some W2 a few months ago. Did you get it?

Emre, tell them your relatives in Tetovo (sic?) Valley in Macedonia will be very angry if you don't get your stuff ;) My translator in Kosovo was a Macedonian Turk, real friendly people.

I have no solutions to offer other than what has already been said. Perhaps in the future you'll be able to afford to stock pile enough supplies where you only have order once a year or so.

I wish you best.

It's either middle east, or western asaia; they overlap. just south of the Mediterranean sea. *Arrogant Canadian*

Anyways, good to see your problems resolving. The issue with the banks is not your fault, just keep bitching until you get a manager, or threaten to elevate.

Eastern Europe it is , no I'm not sure, as a Muslim country everybody thinks it is middle eastern country but I'm not religious person and I can say it loudly that I am not Muslim here in this country and express my thoughts like millions of people here it makes Turkey a European country I guess... We are the only free democratic and secular country in this Muslim region...

I found a place from Sweden http://nordellknives.com/indexx.shtml. As it is placed in Europe and has a lot of steel and supply selection this may be a good place for me. I'm trying my luck there, sent an email of my selection of items... Has good steel selection for damascus making and PM grade SS steel. If they reply positive I guess my troubles will be solved....

Fingers crossed, I patiently waiting the response from there....

Do you guys know a good online shop placed in Europe ?? That info would save my life....

Oh wow. I just looked at a map. First, let me say that Turkey touches Syria and Iraq and Iran, yet still somehow manages to touch Bulgaria and Greece too. How do they do that? And second, there is a country I've never heard of over there called Kazakhstan that's almost as big as Europe!

...yup, I'm pretty ignorant... I guess I'll go have my dinner now. White bread with catsup...

:D No I already tried to threaten some of them, doesnt work as I'have experienced :o..
To stock piling is my this weeks goal. I have about 10 grant $ savings from previous hard work IT life. I'm trying to spend them all :D to avoid this pain after ... Also I gained some real good dealers like Larry from galleryhardwoods.com or some D2 suppliers from Turkey... Now I know where to go when I need some hardwood or D2. If that Sweeden company works with me I guess I can concentrate on making some knives for years to come. For now I sometimes visit my shop and try to begin making some, but I'm very distracted I cannot make anything until these issues are resolved....
Thanks guys, your replies in this thread really helped me to cool down

Man Emre, I really feel for you; this just sucks. I know in the same position I'd be so upset I wouldn't be able to do anything else either. I don't have anything to add that hasn't already been said, so I'll just pile my sympathy on with everyone else's. Hang in there, eventually these things work out.

You may have to keep pressing the bank though. I'm not sure how international banking law works but here in the US, credit card companies are highly regulated and with the right phrases, like "banking commission" and "attorney general," things can start to happen. But you may not have these agencies. Where is the bank located that you're dealing with? Local law will have jurisdiction. If it's a US bank (HSBC sounds familiar), try taking your claim to a US office, if you haven't already.

Your phone bill must be costing a small fortune in itself. I wish I could help in some way.

Sorry, didnt see your location either.Udderholm(steel co) has places throughout Europe and from my experience here with them I'd say their a good company to deal with.

What the hell. How can turkey be part of eastern Europe, west Asia, and the middle east all at once?

and I'm speaking geographically here, your not allowed to disown being middle eastern simply because your not Muslim. that would make me not North American because I'm not christian.
