I'm Making My First Knife/WIP

Sanding the edge down is taking a little longer than I expected. I will hopefully get it closer to "sharp" and then get to working on the scales. I you guys look earlier at the post the scales where kind of square to the knife. I realized that I need to work on the fronts before attaching them to the knife, so they would have more of an angle to them and I don't scratch the blade of the knife. And just now thinking about attaching the scales, is there any good brands of epoxy to use? I have had really bad luck with epoxy in the shop lately and it not holding up to what we thought it was going to do, so I figured I would ask for a specific.

Oh, and Shotgunner thanks for the offer but I think I would keep it "all natural" for the first one. I do appreciate it though.

Since the scales are attached with Corby Bolts, any slow cure epoxy should work fine. 30 minute or one hour type is what you need. For best results, clean everything well ,mix well, apply in a 70 degree temperature ( room temp).

Hey you guys need to check this out.....

You can see me in the knife blade!!!!! Oh its getting completed and looking awesome. Now for the scales!!!!

Its coming along nicely, keep it up:thumbup: Its a real nice feeling when you start to see yourself clearly in the blade isn't it:p

Its a really good feeling. I started on the scales and shaping the fronts near the ricasso. The micarta is harder to work with than I thought, and will be going slow.

Can you use files on micarta? What is a good way to shape the micarta handles? I have been using my sanding block and pressing like hell and get nowhere. I have also put the sandpaper on a flat area and put my weight on the handle and I don't get very far doing that as well. The sandpaper likes to get all clogged up with the micarta as well.

You can certainly use files on micarta, you can even use a rasp for the real rough work. A four-in-hand rasp is very handy, you can get one at any Sears, Home Depot etc. Stop a bit shy of your final dimensions and get the coarse scratches out with 150-grit sandpaper on a block or bar, and proceed from there.

Keep it up, you're doing very well!
