I'm Off to See The Gerbil

Judy, here's to a safe journey, an unusual visit and a safe return.

May the Gerbil be with you.

I talked to Dave before and Judy was there.
I didn't get a chance to speak to Judy, she was busy cooking, cleaning and doing his laundry. Dave said his place has never been so clean. She wasn't able to get him hooked up with his computer, I'll let her explain when she gets back.

Judy will be heading home later, 4 hours back home, and then she has to go to work tomorow.

Dave was really happy to have someone there. I also think he was a little humbled by all of the attention. It did sound like Judy would be visiting VG again. What a great girl.

I'm Alive...... ALIVE! I survived my visit with His Gerbilness.

The coolest thing happened. Last night I took Dave out to dinner. Dave is wearing his Marine Corp ball cap. We went to a Sports Bar called Wulfie's or Wulfy's. So Dave and I are sitting at this table, and this young guy who works there was walking by. He stops, comes to our table and extends his hand to Dave and says, "May I shake your hand? Semper Fi." Dave shakes his hand and says, "Hoo-Rah." The young guy Hoo-Rah's Dave right back. This guy showed such utter respect for Dave. It just blew me away. He stopped back by our table several times and talked with Dave. The guy served over in Iraq, was in the Corp for 6 years, and wants to re-enlist.

This morning, I was thinking about this young man, and what a respectful and decent person he appears to be. So I wrote a note to him asking if he would be willing to help me out with Dave once in a while and I put down my phone number. I dropped it off at the Sports Bar and talked to one of the gals who was working and she had been working last night. Turns out the guy's name is Chris. Maybe he will call. It would be cool if Chris could just visit with Dave once in a while and they could swap war stories. They both have them.

Okay - that is the Semper Fi story.

Do you ever wonder why you do the things you do and then other things fall into place and you wonder why?

Well, it happened this weekend. Why did I choose this weekend to go see Dave? It was a random choice - no particular reason.

So this morning, before going back to Dave's (yes, I stayed in a Hotel - I'm not stupid) I needed to stop by Wal-Mart to get some Ajax that I had forgotten to bring or buy yesterday. As I approach the entrance, there are two woman selling raffles tickets for a beautiful quilt that their quilting group had made. I stopped and talked to the women for a minute - I have a quilt fetish - and one thing led to another and I mentioned that I was in town helping out a friend who had had a stroke or two, and the rest of the story. They gave me the name of a man (Ken) at the Senior Center who might be able to help me find more help for Dave, and they also mentioned the Catholic Church. The one woman said, "Tell Ken that you talked to me (Leona)." So I wrote all of this down. Then Leona mentioned that the quilters were selling items at the craft show this afternoon and it starts at 2pm.

Holy Geez Louise! I just happen to be in town on the same day at a craft fair? I went to the ATM and got money out of my gasoline fund (I'll run to work a few days this month). I did get directions to the craft faire, I bought 6 chances on the quilt and then went to Dave's. Oh, I didn't buy the chances from Leona because I didn't have change right them. And when I came out from Wal-Mart - Leona and the other woman had been replaced why two other women. Had Leona been working the quilt raffle table just when I happened to walk by - for a reason? So we could meet? It's one of those Mysterious Ways thingies.

So I go to Daves, clean, cook, do laundry, etc. Another post for that. Now it's time for me to head home. Bye Dave, see you in a few weeks.

So instead of turning left and heading homes - I turn right and head to the craft fair. I really should have started for home - but No-o-o-o-o-o-o.....

It turns out it is an Octoberfest thing at the local park. A small local event. I see the quilters table and head right there. I cruisin' up and down their display and picking up items, I"ll take this. And this. And another one of these. Oh, and this apron - how does it look? Is it ME?"

This young woman is standing behind the table along with the older women. She says, "Auntie Leona made that." And then I look over and I see Leona. We both smiled. Then I kept referring to her as "Auntie Leona." The other women I had previously seen at Wal-Mart remembered me and were all so nice.

So then I cruise the other craft tables - a bunch of junk stuff - and I am just getting ready to head for my truck, when I look up and Auntie Leona and the young woman approach me. Auntie Leona says, "She (young woman) lives right near your friend and she says she will clean for him and help him."

I looked at the young woman and said, "Really? You would do that? There is so much that needs to be done, etc. etc. etc."

Her name is Kristen. She just lives a few miles from Dave. Her daughter is in school during the day, and her husband works swings, I think. She said she is tired of just looking at the walls during the day.

I explained EVERYTHING to her. About Dave. The uh......uh........condition of his apartment. EVERYTHING. She was not fazed one bit. I told her the carpet needed to be cleaned. "I have a carpet cleaner." "I have a vacuum, I have a mop and bucket." She is equipped.

She was a CNA back in Michigan. I think that stands for Certified Nurse Assistant, but I could be wrong. She used to work in Nursing Homes and also do home visits. Kristen said that if Dave needs help in other areas, that she can help.

I was just astonished. What are the chances of going to a strange town, meeting people in unexpected locations, and then finding the exact perfect person to help out Dave?

Auntie Leona was not going to steer me wrong. And Kristin is a young woman who I feel confident will be honest and straight with me and Dave and she will be close enough that if something comes up, she can help Dave. What more could we ask for?

God works in Mysterious Ways.

I asked Kristin what she would charge. She said she had not even thought about it. I told her to think about it and let me know. She wrote down her name and phone number and I am going to call her.

We talked some more, and Kristin said, "What are you offering?" $$$$$

I said, "I'll pay you $15 an hour." (Cheaper than Visiting Angels by $3)

Kristin said, "I would have taken less."

I said, "I know you would have."

Yes, I could have offered to pay her less. But I believe that we all want Dave to be comfortable and living in sanitary conditions. He is just not capable for keeping his place clean. And I don't mean that in a negative way. Dave had a stroke (or two). He gets around. And he does the best he can. But doing the physical work to keep his place clean is beyond his physical capability and endurance.

Oh, I did stop back by Dave's and I told him about Kristin. He was concerned about how I met her. "Oh, hanging out at the park." hehehe......

Nah, I told him I had met Auntie Leona and then met Kristen at the craft faire. It wasn't a scam.

So I don't think we are going to go with the Visiting Angels for the time being. I think we have a dedicated Angel Kristen who will probably take Dave under her wing. She'll even take him to the store.

I like that Kristen lives close by to Dave. And maybe if she sees something that requires a man's attention, she could drag her husband over to help.

This is stuff I could never have accomplished over the internet. A nice former Marine who might be willing to visit Dave once in a while. A young wife and mother who lives close to Dave who will not be shocked by the condition of Dave's apartment.

Oh! I did say, "Well, Dave has a lot of tattoos......" (thinking she might be intimidated by Dave's skin art).

Kristen said, "So? What's wrong with that? My husband has tattoos."

Ain't it great?

Whats the word on the computer?

Ah.... the computer. I found the Mini-Mac, the keyboard, and the mouse. I searched all over and through most of the boxes, and no sign of the 19" monitor. It could have been stolen during the move to this apartment. Dave said that maybe Alisha has it. I don't know.

I brought the computer home with me. I don't know if a Mac requires a different monitor than a PC. I figure that if I have the computer here, I can use my monitor and get another monitor, and then see how the Mac is working. I have access to the computer guys at work, but don't know if any of them are familiar with Macs. They are mostly PC guys.

But my best friend has a Mac at work and at home. She can probably tell me who I can get to help me locally.

I am hopeful that the computer itself is okay and no damage. It was inside a box in the house. Thank goodness it wasn't in one of the 20+ boxes stacked outside the fence - all of that stuff has been rained on. It just pisses me off what those movers did. But I don't want to go into that.

As soon as I get the Mac up and running, I will drive it back to Dave's and hook him up. I tried to get hotel reservations for the Veteran's Day weekend, but they were sold out.

I'm sorry I couldn't get Dave online this weekend. You just have NO idea what Dave's living conditions are.

If I could have found the monitor, and a 19" monitor is pretty hard to hide, I would have done the best I could to get Dave hooked up. But I didn't want to just run down to Wal-Mart and buy a monitor. I don't know enough about Macs to do that.

:(

Sorry to disappoint you guys. But I will get him up and running with his Mac. Or if I have to, I'll just buy him a new one and charge it.

Judy

That is just totally frickin' great news. Judy, you're the best.

Judy, after all you've done there's nothing you can do to disappoint me.
Dave thinks Allisha probably helped herself to the monitor, now there's a disappointment. Bummer about the monitor, but that shouldn't be a huge problem. Maybe not a 19", but something that will do the job.

Great work this weekend, with the marine and Kristen, Dave is going to have a lot of folks looking out for him.

It sounds like you had a good time asa well and that you and VG got along.

Thanks again Judy.

I have plenty of monitors. They aren't Mac specific but I don't think it matters. The connections should be the same as a pc. 17" is the maximum size but you can have it.

Whats the word on the computer?

When I talked to Dave on the phone last night after returning home, I reminded him that I was going to work on getting his computer fixed and getting a new monitor.

He said, "Alisha probably took the monitor because she remembered she wrote a letter on it and she wanted the letter."

I was thinking, "HUH?"

Alisha must be blonde! And VG still has the funniest sense of humor.

I don't know Macs, but I would think the connections should be the same also.

Anyone here know?

The Mini that I use (once in a great while) has a DVI port, so you will need to get an adapter. They are not expensive at all.

The Mini that I use (once in a great while) has a DVI port, so you will need to get an adapter. They are not expensive at all.

I did some research online and supposedly it should be a "monitor with digital DVI input instead of or in addition to analog VGA."

Now can anyone translate that for me? Will a monitor designed for a PC platform work with a Mac platform?

Help me out here! I did find a 17" LCD Monitor with DVI that is $89.95 after rebate, with free shipping. The rebate ends on the 25th. 2 more days.

G3, is the monitor you are offering a CRT or flat screen? I'm thinking about shipping charges, also. CRT Monitors can be pretty heavy. sigh.

I can make a lot of decisions and sometimes I hate having to make decisions. This is one of those times. YIKES!!!

At times like this I call on my rational headed friends to talk me through. My somewhat reactive and irrational thought process tells me to buy the bottom line $90 DVI ready monitor. (my own funds). The rational and scared side of me says take the freebie and try to make it work.

Where is a man when I need one?

Judy

I talked with Dave's mom for the longest time today.

Oh, BTW... I played hookey from work. My boss is on vacation, which gives me an automatic "in-house vacation." But I was really exhausted from the weekend and the long drive, so I took the day off. Good thing I did, because when I woke up I was walking like Dave.

Dave's mom was not aware that anyone was helping Dave. How could she? She is so worried about Dave's well-being and feels so helpless being unable to be right there. Neither parent drives and they even have to hire a drive to go to appointments and shopping.

Edith (Dave's mom) said to tell everyone thank you from the bottom of her heart. She was quite emotional (tearful) and happy that Dave is going to be getting the assistance he needs.

I am going to make the arrangements with Kristen to get Dave's apartment back in good condition. Edith will be paying for the cleaning, and we will continue with our plans to pay for the trips for grocery shopping, and maybe throw in some money on the cleaning, depending on how things go.

Kristen is going to be a good stabilizing factor in Dave's life, I believe. Both Edith and I can work with Kristen to keep David's apartment clean, his clothes laundered, and his kitchen stocked. Edith will bear the majority of the expense for the cleaning.

I believe that Dave will feel better physically and emotionally as he begins to have more of a routine in his life, and with his apartment being cleaned on a regular basis.

Having Kristen there as our eyes and ears will alert both Edith and me to any changes going on with Dave. Not snitches, just awareness. Kristen is certainly closer than I am, maybe 4 miles vs. my 4 hours.

I will be keeping in touch with Edith. I think she could use an ear once in a while. I was able to reassure her that Dave is only taking his prescribed medications and that I saw no signs of any illegal drug use. It is difficult when one is only communicating over the phone to know how things are. She is so concerned about Dave and wants only the best for him and for him to live in a clean apartment and have clean clothes, and FOOD.

I will continue to drive to Pahrump every month or so to check on Dave for myself. Not that I don't trust Kristen, but because I need to check on him. I just do. And then I can sit down and visit with Kristen in person and get her thoughts on Dave. And Dave will hopefully appreciate my company.

I really like Kristen. I was impressed with her. And she seems so right. Much better than even the Visiting Angels. I probably already said that.

Okay, I'm starting to ramble.

Judy

How come this type of story never makes it to the front pages of the newspaper? God bless you Judy... and I'm not all that religious!

Judy your first question, Yes the monitor with DVI will work with VG's Mac Mini.

Order the $90 DVI ready monitor. You paying out of your pocket is unacceptable. You just had the expense of visiting Dave as well as all the work you did. Now if you want to adopt VG so you can write him off dependant, that's fine. But, trying to do all of this on your own just doesn't sit right. I'll have a check in the mail to you tomorrow.

G3, thanks for your generous offer of the monitior, but if we can start Dave off with a new monitor with a warranty for $90, we should just do it. Do you agree?

I got another 19" just waiting for him and can ship it.

Judy,
What you did was great. Paying her a decent wage was great too.
I'll be glad to help with a new monitor or send him this one which is a good one, I just freed up some space on my desk with a flat panel and was going to donate it some where.

Here's a link so you can check out the monitor I found. It's not a famous name brand, but does come with a 3-year parts and labor warranty. Plus I found the promotion code on another site for free shipping. Oh, and this monitor actually comes with the DVI cable. Many I checked do not and it would have to be ordered separately plus shipping costs.

I am not calling this one. I'm leaning towards the new monitor but I also appreciate the offers of the other monitors - don't want anyone to think that their offer is not in the running.
