I'm out. For good.

All night long. From your post at 12 midnight on, the well wishes, encouragement, empathy and commiseration have poured in ... and they will keep flowing for you. We all journey lifelong, but it is so powerful when you choose your own path.

Safe travels, happy trails.

If a hobby turns into an obsession, it is time to do something about it. I will say however, I postulate that your obsession with knives has manifested itself due to your general unhappiness with how your life is going, knives became a distraction. Good for you for for recognizing that you need a change for your general happiness. When your life becomes more settled in and you have other passions, maybe you can come back to knives as a hobby and have some perspective, so you can keep it a healthy hobby. Good luck!!

If you're really serious, considering you just went gold maybe Spark/Kevin could let you gift your gold to another member, (I'm not even sure if it's transferable) at least it would reduce the temptation to go on your phone and fall off the knife wagon.

In all seriousness, good luck, picking up and starting over isg tough but it can be so rewarding and exciting and if ya come back it's all good, you could be addicted to worse things.

Sounds like there is a whole lot more to this than the first post lets on. Congrats on the lifestyle upgrqde, but you are moving dangerously close to the Spyderco Factory....

Good luck i respect anyone wanting to make changes for the better,

I replaced some of my other hobbies with knives... I must say its healthier and im happier.

With all hobbies and life choices, one should first consider if they can afford it, not just the money involved but also the time you will dedicate to the hobby. A hobby should be something that makes you happy and occupies some time, but not take over or change your life, unless in a positive manner. Then with every hobby or collecting you should enjoy the items, not just enjoy buying the items. I like knives, i like displaying them, using them, looking at them, modding them, decorating them, taking pictures of them... If you are not taking away from the other things in life that are more important, i say collecting knives is a very healthy hobby for a man to have... there is a lot worse you can do with your time and money, IMHO anyway.

All threads need some pictures :)

well man good luck in your travels. Just a bit of advice. Try not to change too much at once or you could run the risk of burning out and going backwards. You may very well be strong enough to push on through. But I know from experience that if you really want to turn your whole life in a different direction its best to do it one degree at a time as apposed to trying to pull a 180 from a dead run. Good luck and safe travels.

The more stuff you have, the bigger the risk that the stuff "owns" you !

In my case, when in Belgium I had quite a collection, and then I had an interesting job opportunity in South East Asia, so I brought only a selected subset of my knives. The rest is still in Europe, I think I will eventually sell most of them.
The bigger challenge was dealing with my love for books, I now have 2 meters of bookcases here - compared to 12 meters in Belgium. A lovely collection, for sure, but it is nicer to live in a relatively uncluttered house now !

I didn't have a personal problem, but I noticed that it is nice to have less stuff around. I am not a minimalist though.

You have been rejected by the primary code.

When something goes from a happy hobby, to an obsession, it is time to walk away. Good luck with your new ventures.

well done and good luck. As worldwood said, there's more to knives than just buying. I find it good therapy when I'm absorbed over doing a mod or making a new sheath. But, yeah, it can get heavy as any addiction. I'm at a point where I realize I need to cut accumulating so much steel, start to let go but still want to score a bunch of good stuff, a complicated balance by all means. Again, best of luck.

. . . I hope you can moderate your obsessions better than I can.
That's not likely to happen with me, I'm afraid. I default to my defects, and obsessing is one of them. All I can do is change what I obsess about.

If you can give up obsessing altogether, you're a better man than I.

Good luck!

My cycles tend to last a little longer than that . . . sometimes years at a time. But life's circumstances have caused me to do a complete and immediate about face on more than one occasion. What that's taught me is to stay away from applying words like "always" and "never" to my behavior. It's also taught me to be a lot more forgiving with myself.

Whether Blade Forums leads to an enjoyable and healthful hobby or a destructive addiction depends on what we bring to the forum, not on anything intrinsic to the forum itself. We can smother the symptoms of addiction and change scenery all we want, but if we don’t address the underlying issue, we’re just playing whack-a-mole.

That's why other hobbies exist!

Once you get bored or overwhelmed with the knife collecting obsession, take a little break and spend your dollars on something like firearms, flashlights, video or audio gear, etc. etc. etc. :D

Exactly. Take a look at the HeadFi forums. People will spend $10,000 on a set of headphone cables.
