I'm Tired Of Technology, Make Mine On An Anvil

With all due respect, i don't see reason, why should this thread be locked...Just because of dude loves other sort of knifes, than most of you guys? I personaly like all sort of knifes, each have certain pro-s and con-s,each is designed for different task, some are just pure joke, others are very serious blades....some are near to indestructible knifes.Hand forged knifes vs mass production,,,both are different ball game in comparison and both will have some excellent and some not as much good examples...Different people will look onto knife different ways and will have different values seen in knife...I personally too (like author of thread) will prefer hand made forged blades, hammered out of raw materials through very difficult and demanding individuall process....Those who do not agree with me,i have no problem with,it is their freedom to opt for mass production...Even mass production have some great choices and really good and reliable examples of knifes,i am not saying they do not.....

How ironic... you are writing that you are tired of technology using an internet forum and a personal computer and posting pictures using a digital camera

He made all those things using an anvil. ;)

In this modern age, we are in danger of losing any individuality at all. Our popular art is produced on a computer. Music can be computer generated, or mixed from musicians sitting in separate boxes. Cu-cu clocks can be made in a Chinese factory, or by a master craftsman... who cares, all that's important is the finished product.

There's a whole lot of difference between playing "A Taste Of Honey" on a computer-controlled keyboard and playing it on a trumpet. Have you ever tried to play a trumpet?

The knife is our oldest weapon and tool. We are born soft and pink, yet with a piece of steel, we are the match of any creature on Earth. Why would you have something stamped out of sheet metal then ground and tempered by a computer? I've been watching the videos. Knives cut out by a laser robot. Knives that claim uniqueness only so far as they can be stamped out of a sheet.

There are two knives: Ones that are made on an assembly line and ones that are made on an anvil. The first will never be the second. It's all carnival hype.

Do we really need 58 hardness? What about flexibility? Do we really need brittle, brittle stainless steel that snaps like glass? Unique isn't the same thing everybody else thinks is unique. How many shapes can you cut out of sheet metal??

Do yourself a favor and get a REAL knife! Then, keep it on you.

Do yourself a favor and get a real knife, steel is all "carnival hype"

Ok, so what I want to see is a knapped obsidian titanium liner lock! Best of both worlds right?

This thread is hilarious:thumbup:

At first I'm just like "oh look, another bitter old timer"

But then out of nowhere it turned into SO MUCH MORE:D

Please send this to W&C! This dude needs to a proper response:rolleyes:

By the way, pry up a manhole cover with this little stainless steel beauty... Watch what happens... My guess is the tip will snap off, but it can sure hold an edge while it's breaking.

I bet your forged knife would also snap while prying up a manhole cover, but hold an edge for much less of a length of time.
oh, and about the whole "a little wrong" thing, wrong is an absolute, you are either wrong or your not. Think of it like being "a little" pregnant"...

That would probably work as well as slicing a tomato with a pry bar.

Use the right tool for the job.

bronze age for life!!!!!!!
Also some one needs to email Nathan the Machinist and tell him that he is neither an artist nor a knife makers and that his knives are all brittle because they are not 10XX series steel. same goes for dozens of top tier makers.

Knives = good. No matter what kind. I have a couple of rustic-ish forged knives myself, made by Bladeforums' own Rick Lowe.

But the topic had taken a drastic non-knife swerve. It's back on track now, and I'm glad it wasn't locked.

You're right bud! I'm just getting into knife making and have tried both routes. I'm better using a grinder but it's not as fun as pounding on red hot steel. No matter where technology goes there will always be a place in my heart and on my belt for the classics.

Not throwing away my cnc'd flippers anytime soon though ;)

You use your nails and your teeth. I will stick to CPM S-110-V and 3D printed Titanium handles.

I still want a lightsaber.

Ha! Nathan the Machinist is having fun conning you all. That knife in his video wasn't what he said it was, he's lying. It was made out of the fames Rostafrei from de island of Jamaica, mon. He got that bar when he was down there last year, and he visited one of the most famous smiths on de island. After some friendly smoking, da smith gave Nathen da billet to take home wit him to make da knife in de video.

Rostafrei is de best knife steel around, mon. Made only in de islands on an anvil blessed by de Rastafarian priests.
:D
