Okay, Kevin and Cliff. It is a known fact that Kyle spent considerable time on more than one occasion in Ron's shop working and studying as it were with him. He could have been and most probably was exposed to design concepts similar to or exactly like the drawing. Now, as Kevin stated in one of his earlier posts he/we/anyone can see something and it goes from there to our subconscious memory bank. Then at some point in the future it pops up again, And we don't remember just where it came from, but it's there. This could very well have happened when Kyle came up with the round handle idea versus the coffin handle. It could have been an idea grown from his association with, and in Ron's shop.

Those of you practically demanding to see photo of the 1998 knife….It might be handy and nice and serve to stick it in your ear, but Ron doesn't owe any of us anything along those lines, and to infer that it is only a drawing of questionable date and origin is pretty much the same as calling Ron a liar, which I'm sure was not your intention…..was it?

Now I certainly don't think that Kevin or Kyle copied the drawing to obtain their design, but as mentioned Kyle's exposure to Ron's way of doing things might well be a factor. Pull up the thread Kevin linked where he asked for input for the design of his unique knife. My conclusion was and yours could be that instead of "his" design, it wound up being the compilation of many ideas input by several top makers and collectors. Particularly the transition from coffin to round handle which was contributed by Kyle and could have easily been the sub conscious result of Shop time with Ron.

The handle on Kevin's knife is the real tie breaker and I think my take on it's origin is plausible. Not exact as the drawing but as close as sub conscious memory could bring back, still not realizing exactly where it came from, hence NOT an overt attempt to copy.

I don't think Kevin and Kyle copied Ron knowingly, and I sure don't think Ron copied them based on 1997/98 proof.

I further think this whole thread is a damned shame for the potential damage it may have done to friendships and relationships some of which may be beyond repair.

As I see it, neither party suffered any real damage as a result of the act……..not sure as to the results from the thread.

Paul and I disagree on this, but he is patently more giving to fellow man than I am.

IF you give away all your secrets, especially hard won knowledge, what is the point of even striving for excellence?
I mean....I'm not looking for good, very good or superb custom knives as a given rule.....I am searching for the BEST custom knives, by just about any measure, except stupid high prices.

As an example, I would LOVE a Wolfe Loerchner knife, but the $20,000.00++ price tag is a deterrent....and will be for the foreseeable future.

The cost difference between a Paul Long sheath and other great leather smiths is about 50%.....and that troubles me not at all....TO ME....you have a Paul Long sheath.....and you have the others.

There is always room for an opinion on this issue, but this is mine.....originality is to be applauded, accepted and RESPECTED.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Pure fallacy, and certainly not my experience with masters of their trade and craft in more than one field.

Paul, very well written and you present a logical scenario in suggesting that the design was buried in Kyle’s subconscious from shop time spent with Ron. So convincing that I’m going to accept this scenario. Anyway, I’m about as tired of discussing this Ring Bowie copy affair now as I was 18 months ago when Kyle and I initially found Ron had made his “like” Ring Bowie.

I am still puzzled about the drawing though, or rather strange photo of a knife drawing. It did come as a surprise to me and I can’t imagine why this drawing or even the mention of a previous Newton Ring Bowie design didn’t surface 18 months ago when Ron was initially confronted about making such a similar Ring Bowie. But, whatever.

whew! Thank the gods.

In closing, Imitation is...odd.
