I am stunned and very sad for the loss of an honourable gentleman.

I'm not a religious guy in any sense of the word, so I won't babble about prayers, and heaven and crap.

I will however say that this totaly SUCKS in ways that I can't even begin to describe. To lose that one sane, grounded soul in a sea of (often times) knuckleheads is quite a devastating blow.

I mean, the way he could pull in the reigns on an out of control "flame fest" was pure art. He always knew just what to say, and when to say it.

That kind of poise and character is not something you get to see everyday......... damn.

I could always count on him to post pictures and give reports from shows that I couldn't make it to. MAN, am I going to miss that.

No sir......... it's not a good day at all.

I wish his family all the strength they need to make it through this sad time.

............ Mike & Spark, please keep his name ON the moderator list. He definitly earned it!

It is a litte after 4:00 am and I could not sleep so I thought that I would check the forums. I am saddened to hear about James. I had the pleasure of meeting James at the last two Blade shows. He was a regular at the Spyderco and Blade Forums booths. My last memory of him was trying to put his stuff down so that he could get a shot of Spark in that pink Tu Tu.When ever he was around a table full of knives he see seemed to have a glow about him. Toni, our prayers are with you. He will be missed.

I just saw this post. I must say I am at a loss for words. James will be missed by his fellow knife nuts. He was always very helpful and very entertaining in the chat room. It will not be the same without him.

Regards,

Tom Carey

It's been some time since I last posted here although I've religiously been browsing the forums. I just saw the post about James and my heart dropped. James was a true knife enthusiast and his input was always well respected. My heart and prayers goes out to the Toni and the rest of Mattis family.

Mrs. Mattis and family,
my heartfelt condolenses. Know that a piece of James lives on in you and also in all those who knew him.He was without a doubt a warm, loving, and honorable man. Only once in a while do any of us come into contact with greatness. I believe knowing James was one of those times. As you can see from all the posts, he touched many lives.I hope in some small way you can take some comfort in knowing he touched so many lives.
Peace and comfort to you and your family.

Jim was always there to guide and share his experience with most of us forumite on the Spyderco threads. The news of his departure was shocking and a great loss to the knife community. May he rest in peace. Amen.

Sam

Though I never got to meet James in person, he has made a profound impact on my life. There was nobody more fair than James. He had the wisdom of Solomon. There have been several situations that I have solved by thinking "what would Mr. Mattis do?" He was a true gentleman. His passing leaves a void that will not be filled. I will deeply miss him, and regret never having the opportunity to meet him face to face.

I agree with Jim March about keeping his web pages alive. There is a part of him in those pages.

My condolences to the family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

James was one of the members of BladeForums (and the knife community in general) whose opinions, thoughts, etc. I always respected and enjoyed reading. I am extremely saddened that I will never have the chance to meet him in person on this earth. My thoughts to his family and close friends. I just logged on to check the forums after work when I read the news, I'm so bummed right now I'm going to just going to TRY and go to bed. God bless, James, you'll be missed!

I'm wordless. I started browsing through BF starting from James Msttisis forum as usually. It was not there. I wondered what had happened and jumped to general forum.

We have lost him.

I newer thought that I'd shed tears for someone I've newer met. But my eyes are wet.

I'm try sorry for all of us that lost his company. We are much poorer now.

My deepest sympathy to Toni and the rets of his family.

A wonderful man is gone, a sad loss to everyone. James Mattis was a wise and funny man who made a unique and unmatchable contribution to this community.

See you at sundown James.

James was one of the positive forces in these forums and I am sure in the life and affairs of those around him.

I remember sending a donation to James for some good cause. I was unexpected surprised by the receipt of a knife from James.

James was apparently a believer in "good karma" and did his share in spreading it around.

May his karma continue to ripple out long after this. He'll be missed.

James was my dealer. I always bought everything from him. Now that I think why he became my dealer... I don't know: Maybe it was his interest in Scandinavian knives, specially puukkos, or maybe because the Good Karma Cut, maybe because he really seemed to care about my purchases and always made sure they'd get to Finland in the best possible way. But I think it was mostly because his kindness, which he spread through BF. He tried to cool down guys who were arguing a bit too much, and when others would only talk about all the tactical stuff, he always brought up the tool side of the knives. Maybe that's one thing he would like us to remember about knives, that they are "Good tools to sustain life, or at least make life more convenient" - and not just weapons to cause harm.

I never met James in person, only through BF and countless emails. He was a gentleman.

Toni, my thoughts are with you and your family. James will be missed around the world.

Losing a friend hurts and thoughts difficult to put to words.

James touched many lives, making this world a better place...and I hope this gives solace to all...friends and family.

Though I never had the honor of meeting James in person his presence on BF as a thoughtful person and gentleman touched many ...as it did me...and though we had never shook hands I always knew I could call him Friend.

I never met Mr. Mattis, nor even chatted with him, but I'd come to respect him enormously. From reading his posts here and his websites, I learned much more than I'd ever have expected...and not just about "sharp shiny objects," either.

My most sincere condolences to those of you who did know him personally. He was a truly valuable man.

Not only have we lost a true gentleman, which James always was, but also a voice of reason amid the confusion. I will miss both. I`m shocked and saddened.

I`ll miss his knowledge, his sense of humor, his wonderful scans and his endless passion for all things sharp and shiny.

Godspeed, Jim. You`re in a better place!

James presence will be missed dearly..
We can all have a prayer and stay strong..
Take Care James..
