Inexpensive beater knives

ScannedImage-22-1.jpg
HEY! I recognize that red-handled beauty! A CORONA! My main machete! Excellent beater.

Started with a cheap kitchen knife and a pair of left over diamondwood slabs.
Way under $30.

I've just added about 40 knives to my list, but they are all under $30 so at worst I only need to come up with $1200...

Dialton, did you re-profile that beauty or is that a standard Ontario blade?

I slowly cut the blade off with a dremel to get that "nessie sort of" style on the snout but the edge and basic grind is factory.

You did a great job. I bet G. W. Sears himself would have admired that blade. I've enjoyed seeing all of the personalized blades on this forum. Their value definitely exceeds their price.

I so want to do that, what model knife is that?? how thick is the blade at spine..

SUPER SWEET !!! appears to have some real chopping power, and serious control......

Thanks, skab8541, that's a really nice score. I'll keep looking.
You can get one of the Green Rivers new still for about $15, flat ground carbon steel at about 1/8" thick (they have 5", 6" and the less upswept sheep skinner). Try Track of the Wolf and Jantz Supply, among others.

Whoops, just noticed that I quoted from the wrong part of this convo ~ this is in response to the question of where to get the Old Hickory skinners with the thicker blades.

I am an elitest and a knife snob, so my favorite beater knife was $35 ;) Sure it's kind of ugly and clunky looking, but I really like using it. Usually a point is better, but the square tip comes in mighty handy too
