On the other side of the ledger, though, I do want to say that I think the OP has been uncommonly polite through this whole thread. Threads like this almost always become horrors - this one is staying quite civil even though there are a lot of strongly-felt disagreements. Kudos for all of us, really. :)

I concur wholeheartedly with your statement, sir! It's truly astonishing, and speaks volumes to the type of individuals who coherent this forum. Bravo to you all!!! It's been a great pleasure, too associate and be in your presence. :)

How does the D/A mechanism have anything to do with the tang blemish, the imperfect lockface, the uneven chamfering, and the spotty anodization? Did Vallotton get this knife and decide to hit the tang with a chisel, then make a little dent in the lockface, remachine the frames so that the chamfers are uneven, and take a piece of sandpaper to the standoff?

-

Some respectful thoughts:

- Is not the imperfect lockface the result of wear from the auto-open mechanism? My Sebenza show wear in the same area after long use.

- Maybe Valotton had to clamp the slabs while machining out the spring pocket, and then corrected damage done by the vise, or incidental contact with whatever machine was used? The scale chamfers may not be original. I strongly believe that the knife was reblasted after the mods as it would be almost impossible to modify the knife so extensively without any snail trails. Think about it. They almost make themselves! I bet my money you are looking at scales that have been re-blasted to hide the marks from the modification. The blasting itself, if aggressive, may have changed the chamfers also.

- Imperfect anodization is a common way to spot the Chinese fakes, so you might want to check that. Also if you understand how they anodize Ti it is a surface treatment that changes the way light refracts, not a surface dye like the standard aluminum anodization process. Any handling of the backspacer (which clearly it must be handled to modify the knife) will results in possible changes to the appearance of the Anodization. CRK enthusiasts realize that the anodization on any CRK part is a temporary beauty, unless the knife is a "safe queen". My blue backspacer shows colour variation just from being in my pocket, but was perfect when new.

No offense, but for me at least, this knife doesn't exist until I see some more pictures. I assume if you have the technology to measure so accurately these details, and have an internet connection, chances are you can take and post some picture, so please do for all of our sakes. That would be kind. I'd really love to see what this knife is all about. Other than that. this is either a long-winded experiment by a under-grad phychology student, doing a dissertation on OCD knife collectors, or it is the sad tale of a dude who paid way too much money for a fake knife. I hope that is not the case. Maybe a seed has been planted in your mind, and you will buy a real Sebenza and enjoy that, or not.

Well, with no belly on that blade, I would say it has been used and sharpened a huge amount, then likely dressed up to sell. Sorry, but I really don't think that knife is BNIB dude! The Classics typically have a lot more belly than that. Thanks for posting the vid!

Yeah my thoughts as well. The blade looks like it's been sharpened a fair bit.

So we can now blame the uneven grind and marks on the tang from third party sharpening and tang wear from endless deployment of the auto blade by previous owners. The chamfers have likely suffered from the re-blast, because if the knife slabs look new, with that much sharpening on the blade, it has to have had a "spa treatment" and not by CRK as they would not touch it.

The 'defects' with this knife are all post-factory from what I can tell from that video. Third party bead blast, free hand sharpening, auto knife. No wonder it's Fubar

And thinking more, if the blade looks "new" it will have been re-stonewashed as well, also not by CRK, which likely has resulted in the lack of "smoothness". The condition of the track the detent ball slides in may be anyone's guess, and there may have been a lot of damage to the tang that was removed prior to it being stone-washed for sale.

I know way of knowing, but with that blade profile, I think your might have been ripped off if you bought this knife as "unused".

Not trying to flame you, just trying to help you get your money back.

Tang has a ~0.1mm blemish.

How did you measure this? I can see this and estimate it with my eyes,..but I have been a machinist for a long time.
Typically, improvements to programs and processes weed this stuff out fairly quick. This area, if it exists as an artifact of anything machined by CRK, was likely on a few of them..This would be the advantage as well as disadvantage to CNC's. Parts will all be the same to a point that only measuring tools can differentiate between them (of course, this is assuming that toolwear is removed from the equation) I would have to see a pic of it to understand it..I can't see something like this getting by Chris to be honest..Especially if it was on several, but he didn't inspect every part either. If it did get through, then the original buyer needed to rectify this.

Chamfer on the jimping area on the non-presentation spine side is very slightly narrower on the middle 1/5 of the grooves. No such unevenness on the presentation side.

Can you take a pic of this? (although Cody eluded to an answer, I would still like to see it)

Chamfer right next to the butt end near the pocket clip on the lock side has a very slight taper while the respective presentation side chamfer is completely straight.

Pic of this too please (same here)

Lockface is not completely flat, there is a ~0.5mm facet at a slightly different angle in its lower left hand corner near where the lockface terminates. Thankfully this is not where the blade tang contacts it.

IIRC, alot of these were hand ground, so there could be inconsistencies..There is alot of handwork for fitting on CRK folders

Inner chamfer of the part of the scale nearest lockface is slightly wider on the presentation side scale than the lockside scale. Otherwise all the inner chamfering is perfectly even.

If its the area I am thinking of, it was probably finished off with a file by hand. Dealing with internal corners with round tools does not give a square corner...Believe me..I have searched for an age for a square endmill that does sharp internal corners since Engineers keep putting these on prints.

Grind is ~0.5mm higher on the lock side than it is on the presentation side. (N.B. my Terzuola has a slightly larger inconsistency, about ~1mm, but keep in mind that blade was hand-ground)

I believe at the time your Sebenza was produced, many of them were hand ground as well. Not sure how that is handled currently.

Blue anodized standoff has uneven anodizing - not very apparent normally but when disassembled and this part is examined closely it is there.

As many times as this has been passed from owner to new owner as well as each succession of hands, I am not surprised that the anodize is inconsistent. Anodize isn't forever on Ti, especially any Ti that has a good finish.

There is no belly left on that blade. My money is that this knife has a lot of stories to tell before it's trip to the beauty parlour.

This is such an interesting thread.

I'll take the knife off your hands if you don't want it :)

So, if the OP's Sebenza is on par with his custom knives, does that mean stock Sebenzas are better? Never mind😜

No apology necessary. It's knives. People get excited!. If you don't like the knife, hopefully you have got enough "ammo" to demand your money back, or keep it as a curiousity. Pretty cool knife if you ask me, but I don't know what you put down for it.

What did I say to you in your first thread asking about that knife ?....... :p

It's possible. I guess, in retrospect, that really says something about their quality.

I am pretty upset that I was essentially scammed in purchasing this knife; it was described to me as new except for the modification and I asked plenty of detailed questions, all of which were answered, so I thought the deal was fine. I was excited to get a Sebenza, then disappointed, and now embarrassed that I was taken for a ride and shared an inaccurate judgement. This knife is probably going back to the seller. I apologize and I hope you guys can forgive me for my rashness.

I really wish a mod would move this thread to Whine & Cheese and have some of the regular posters on W & C have a Great Time with

asdf12345 about his thread. Everyone here has been polite. This thread would torn apart on W & C....where I really think it belongs.

asfd12345 Just Doesn't Get It. We've all tried....Hello Wall. It's Really hard to talk to a wall.

I suggested that as well. This is really not the place for this.

I will not move this to W&C, to make a joke of it. It has been mentioned how polite the discussion has been.

Post 73 solves any problems that arose.

Esav....I was kidding about moving this thread to Whine & Cheese. I knew that would Never happen. The thread was moving in the same

direction that a lot of threads go when a member starts a trolling thread. In a much nicer way tho.

As 12345 said in post #74 he was taken for a mean 'ride', we should consider this thread CLOSED.

If he got screwed, I feel for him. It sucks to put down your hard earned $$ for something that was not described accurately. I have found out over the years when Buying that MANY people have a different definition of Mint or Like New or USED even. Traded ( something I will never do again ) a Mint small regular UG for a supposed MINT small 21 dog paws. Mine was indeed flawless without so much a blemish. What I received was a small dog paws that looks like a dog had really scratched it All Over. I did not do much about if I recollect, but considered it a lesson learned. Its was from a so called long standing member so I let it go, just learning to never go that route again. But it still pisses me off though......!!!
