There's a lot to be said in favor of weightlifters' drink mixes as a survival ration... many of them pack a whole boatload of calories, macro-nutrients like milk/egg proteins and various carbs, and lots of vitamins/minerals in a pretty compact package. They're kinda pricy, but not nearly as expensive as MRE's, and much more efficient to pack and carry. Some of them even taste almost OK. Years ago when I worked out, I mixed that sort of powder with chocolate syrup and/or peanut butter... you can almost fool yourself into thinking it's a milkshake.

(BTW, ever talked to a dude that had to live on MRE's for days or months at a time? They're typically not real thrilled about it, and not looking forward to doing it again.)

Come to think of it, it's weird that those kinda mixes aren't mentioned more often when folks discuss BOB's and caches and whatnot...

My max on MRE's was 4 or 5 months straight , wasn't the best dining, but I lived through it. I still chow down on a few now and then.

Currently staying in Cloudland Canyon state park in Georgia. Bouldering in Rocktown about 40 minutes away. The weather during the days has been perfect (12 to 14 C) and the evenings have been below freezing. Lovely part of the world.

Hey bud we dont use Celsius here leave that up north ;)

Newer MRE's arent as bad as OLD ones. Some of the older ones were terrible. Like when nutritionists examined them they threw them out, and they re did the entire IDEA of feeding the military ... The old ones were barely food.

LOL. I hear ya! Been also using way too many Beckers for a variety of daily tasks. Impressions so far are as follows:

The BK5 is an incredible knife for food prep. What a brilliant slicer. It will be our food prep knife for any climbing or camping trip.

The BK2 is a beast when it comes to processing fire wood. That thing batons and splits wood almost as well as a purpose built splitting axe. I suspect that the 1/4 inch thick blade has a lot to do with its performance. A longer blade would have made it even more effective at this task, but it might also limit its versatility during finer tasks like creating feather sticks and shavings for starting a fire. BTW, started a one match fire and used only the 2 to prepare the wood.

The BK11 has got to be one of my favourite Beckers. It's opened numerous beers while also slicing delicate pieces of saucisson sec and manchego.

And finally we come to the BK 9. What can I say about the King that has not already been said. It chops. It batons. It slices. It does small delicate work that no knife its size should technically be able to do. Just get one.

So, I got the molle back for the Esee 5/6 and bastardized my Bk-2 sheath. I think it turned out pretty damn good personally.

I lived on MREs for over 45 days before getting a hot meal. Not great, but they are not that bad really

I liked the LRP rations better than the MREs that replaced them. The later MREs weren't too bad but I didn't have to eat them for 6 months though.

Nice little review Gmonry,

Nice rigging on that BK2 Cbear.

Never had the LRP rations Ray, but when most people complained about the MREs i had no problems with them.

LRP rations or LURP rations predated the MREs. They were freeze-dried and you had to add hot water to the bag or just eat them dry.I liked the pork patties eaten dry. They were tasty to me.

Just looked on the "myhealthevet" VA website to check out all my latest blood test results and it looks like my bad cholesterol is pretty high.

Looks like bacon might have to be cut from the diet for a while as well as MOST of what i eat. fried chicken, fried porkchops, fried egges... fried anything.... that just sucks.

Its nice to have a wife that reads these results, because i didnt know what the crap meant. Whats not good about that is she wants to change my entire diet to what they tell their patients to eat.

I finally got mine down to a good level, but I am still building my good level up... it was still a bit low. I had to go from eating 5 pieces of bacon to 1/2.. but at least I can still get some flavor. I also bought flax seed and I add it to everything, walnuts and almonds and eat a handful before every meal and snacks, and I have some weird grain type stuffs like Quinoa and Freekeh... Also I have fish at least twice a week, northern pacific, non farm raised is the best for your heart.

that's my old man advice for the day,,,,

Thanks for the advice!! How does Quinoa and Freekeh taste?

still working on it... the Quinoa is almost rice like... or bigger couscous.. but different. We have prepared it with tomato based sauces mainly.. The freekeh we make it, cook and let stand and then we have been adding it to other dishes. Taste kind of like flax seed.. nutty. Kind of like brown rice, which is another good thing to eat.. brown not white. My palate is not as developed as say Ethan's or C-Bears is.. I am using it mainly as home remedy, doesn't taste bad at all. just doesn't taste like tacos and brisket either ;)

Quinoa is actually really good and used in taboulleh. Which is mostly green leafy plants (cilantro, mint, parsley) chopped up with tomatoes, lemon juice, quinoa, and a dash or two of salt.
