The artery is on the front of the ankle isn't it?

(I went to see Bodies last week ;) )

There's arteries all through your legs the major one runs down the inside and splits near the foot, one on the front, one on the back right next to your achilles tendon. I'll see if I can find a picture.

it goes down the front of the leg and curves to the heel a bit and branches along each bone in the foot...i'm not sure if this cut went around enough (hard to tell from the angles) to get close enough, but even a popped tendon you can bleed out pretty quick. The first pic with it open looks like it curves around towards the front of the foot...I dont have a medical degree, my training extends as far as stabilising (CPR and wound dressing to stop bleeding) the patient until an EMT arrives.

Here we go, you've got your main artery that runs down your leg from the Femoral artery, changes names a few times, and then branches off just below the knee becoming the Fibular going around the front and the Posterial Tibial along the back. Actually the one on the front in an artery thet branches off earlier but you get the picture, it splits a bunch of times when it gets to that area.

I still think it's a part of your body where you have little "chance" to hit an artery. It would be far more dangerous to hit the leg higher, or drop it in your stomach.

It's also far enough from the heart so you can act efficiently and before you pass out.

Both knife inflicted. In the first one, I sliced off the little pad on top of the knuckle, second one is pretty self explanatory, there were also seven stiches inside since it was fairly deep.

Cutting into your achilles tendon is bad enough and if you do manage to do it there is a high possibility of hitting that artery. Cutting an artery is never a good thing and wherever you hit it there is a good chanch that you can bleed out. Granted, it would take bit more time to bleed out from a small artery in your foot than it would to bleed out through your femoral artery, which only takes a couple of minutes if not treated immediately, but, any artery will cause severe bleeding and can cause death fairly quickly. If you cut that artery and it recracts up into your leg you're in big trouble even if you don't pass out because it will still be bleeding. In that sense, cutting your achilles tendon could easily become a life or death scenario, as can a broken or dislocated ankle, or knee for the same reason.

I had ta' look
I came for the knives...I get CSI.
Like my father, a butcher, used to say, "just don't make a mess"!

I'm the guy who cut his ankle, luckily I must have missed any arteries.

The strangest thing is that the knife was so sharp I didn't even feel it cut me. I just went to take a step and it felt like the floor was caving in under my foot. ( wierdest sensation ever! )

When I sat down and looked to see that huge gash in my ankle I swear my heart skipped a couple beats, and I got this sick sinking feeling like "oh shit, this is realy serious"

Luckily I did this while standing in my kitchen and my wife was upstairs. First thing I did was wrap a dish towel around it, then wrapped a belt around and sinched it up tight. The wife grabbed the crutches I had from a previous injury, and drove me to th ER herself. ( she was NOT pleased, since she was 9 months pregnant at the time and realized that she would soon have to take care of both me and the baby for a while :o)

-Anyway, it bled little enough that I was able to snap that pic while in the ER waiting for the surgeon. Scary to think how close I must've been to causing MAJOR blood loss! The surgeon, along with everyone else at the ER, were all quite impressed with how sharp my knife was though! :) ...said it was easier to reconnect since it was such a clean cut.

so theres the truth in a sharp knife is a safe knife :D easier to patch up lol.

That's true, you should have seen how much they had to cut off before they could stitch up a gash I gave myself on a piece of fence wire at work. That after I waited in the emergency room for two hours being forced to watch MASH reruns. My boss just says to stay at work next time something like that happens and he'll just sew me up there.

Here is my stupidity injury with an axe:

I don't see it, what am I looking at? I assume it's a break but I can't find it.

Axe wounds suck, I had a pretty minor one a couple of years ago, messed my knee up pretty good. Never went to the hospital but it took a few weeks before I could walk without limping and it was stiff for a year or so.

i cant see whats wrong? lol besides what looks like a BB pellet in your leg? is there a fracture not showing up?

That is a chunk of my axe that fractured off, and flew into my leg like a bullet. It is still there.

My last MRI reminded me of that. ;)

I've had those before from wedges, mine usually go into my hand and I end up digging them out but I think I've got one in my leg too but it's too deep for me to get out. The worst is when they go in hot and burn the wound closed behind it.

What a fantastic learning tool Rick.

Here is my contribution.

What is a Joezilla post without a little machete homage, or in this case, an injury, about 6 years ago now.

Cold Steel 24" latin POS machete, and I missed. Severed Extensor tendon

I have another injury I'll post up later, not as bad.

Yay foot injuries- Don't mess up skydiving (my first jump for those who aren't sick of me mentioning it!). Tib/Fib right, Fib left and "some" tendon/ligament damage.

(just a couple of quick ones off of my wife's facebook page.

Wow, those are some GNARLY injuries. I especially like Joezilla's picture where you can see inside the foot.

I think my worst yet was when I was attempting to use the tip of a cheap Coast C2040-4 or C2040-5 knife as an awl and punch a hole through some thick leather. Unfortunately, it didn't stop at puncturing the leather, but sliced through the whole thing and into my thumb. I knew it was bad because I felt the blade stop against my nail, and although I instantly held it together to slow the bleeding, I was finding tiny blood spots around my room for months to come.

Before I started feeling woozy, I told my sister to call my mom, and it turned out pretty easy to butterfly it tightly, and I just left it at that. I have a nice scarline across that thumb, but no adverse effects.

holy hell those foot wounds are gruesome! i was going to make a sandwich but i'll hold off now :p was their any severe lasting effects from what happened to your foot joe?
