Inkosi vs. Umnumzaan

Moreover, for me the jimping on the spine of the Inkosi provides way better grip than that of the ‘Zaan. Alternating two small notches with one medium notch provides excellent grip, whereas the ‘Zaan has just tiny notches that provide little to no traction.
I absolutely agree with everything you said here word for word.

Reviving an old post here. I recently purchased both in MagnaCut.
Likewise.

I am very new to owning CRK products.
I have only had my Umny for a couple days now, and the Inkosi for a couple weeks.

I love the jimping and spine shape/texture on the Inkosi.
The forward spine of the Umnumzaan looks awesome, but I wish it had the more aggressive jimping of the Inkosi.

I only wish they’d made it so the lanyard would spin on the Inkosi like the ‘Zaan because I actually find the lanyard to be useful for retrieval out of pocket, but the lack of mobility of the lanyard on the Inkosi makes it so that the lanyard is less useful.
I also have taken to liking the lanyards for easy retrieval.
I find that the Inkosi lanyard tends to fold forward into my pocket and I have to dig for it to the point it's as easy to just grab the butt of the knife.

I have added similar lanyards to my Spyderco PM2 and Manix 2. Those tend to ride right where they are easy to grab.

You see jealous, I see self-confidence. That inkosi is the only one rocking an insingo blade, and it knows it doesn't need all the flash.
I'll stay with Sebenza Insingos. They receive the "Kettleman Seal of Approval". ;)

(Though the only Inkosi I might pick up would be the large Insingo. I have a weakness for that blade pattern.)

I still say the Inkosi is the best all around folder CRK has produced. From EDC to hard user and everything in between.

I do however prefer the Sebenza Insingo blade over it.

It's ironic, because were I to try out an Inkosi, that's the only blade I'd be interested in...and I already have two Insingos and probably don't really "need" another.

I get that. The fact that I just didn’t like the Inkosi Insingo is what made me realize my 25’s were everything I wanted from an Inkosi if I was going to have a DP and kept me in the Sebenza family.

I’ve had a magna DP Inkosi about a week now and so far prefer it to the Zaan (although both are of course great). I really like the Zaan when wearing gloves and I know it was designed with that in mind. So it often ends up with me when working outside. But overall I just like the deployment more on the Inkosi, and I prefer the jimping also on the Inkosi as others here have said. I like the Sebenza jimping even more, but I’ll keep the thread on topic.

I also prefer the clip placement on the Inkosi as the Zaan I end up with a hot spot (don’t have the issue on my 25 though). I believe Blues mentioned he had something similar with the clip and prefers it clip less, and I tried that recently and was a huge improvement for me. Ergos overall I like better on the Inkosi, but especially clip less Zaan makes it a little more even. I’m happy we have both to choose from because they each bring something different to the table.

A lot of folks will say the Inkosi is the best knife CRK is making right now. I’m not sure I can make a logical disagreement.

I’ll hold to the opinion that the Zaan is Inkosi’s cool big brother. Not everyone can handle the cool.

Now if we could all just agree that the Tanto is actually the best blade shape on the Inkosi as well…😅 It looks a little funny on the Inkosi (the Zaan wears it better), but the Tanto won me over because I love the 1” or so section of the edge that angles back up to the spine for its ability to slice in tight quarters. For example, I get a lot of calluses on my hands and use that section to trim them. That way I don’t have to worry about the rest of the long edge potentially slicing live skin. I can just hone in on that tiny section and know that I’m going to slice right where I want. It works really great for small scraping tasks as well, but I wouldn’t do any prying even though it could probably take light prying. Of course, the tip of the Tanto punctures the best out of the three blade shapes offered. The Insingo I prefer only in the sense that it can do longer slices all the way to the point, whereas when the Tanto reaches its second point and angles steeply, my slicing ability is gone. The tip is a bit safer as far as accidents go on the Insingo compared to the Tanto. Now the Drop Point is a different story. The Drop Point was the first Inkosi I tried, and I wish it were the happy medium between the Tanto and Insingo for versatility…BUT, I personally prefer a drop point with a more pronounced belly and therefore a longer straight section where the blade edge is not curving. With the gentle sweep of the Drop Point as is, there’s very little close-to-straight section on it. With a steeper curve on a Drop Point the belly could be used sort of independently from the rest of the edge for doing aforementioned slices in tight spaces as well...not that you can’t slice with the tip of a Drop Point, but the “push slice” ability is not there due to the gradual curve. It’s more of a “sweep slice” (yes, I think I’m making up words). If CRK were to do something like that, I may very well choose drop point over Tanto…because longer, uninterrupted slices and still good for puncturing while having the utility of a big belly. For now, I’m working on my skill at using the second point on the Tanto similarly to how I used the point on the Insingo for fine utility cuts.

That was a ramble. Probably only makes sense to me.

This thread has been helpful as I have the wants for my first CRK and have been going back and forth between the Zaan and the Inkosi
Initially I was leaning toward the Zaan. However, I'm now leaning toward an Inkosi as my first CRK.

I suspect that whatever I get first, I will become spoiled with CRK quality, fit & finish and end up wanting one of each :)

My current inventory is a modest collection of Emerson's, Spyderco's and ZT's - time to try a CRK !

Thanks to all that posted on this thread as it's helpful and informative.

I went Inkosi to start. Not disappointed.

You’ll end up with both anyways :)
