Inner Tube Extravaganza

Alright, looks like we are full up. Good luck! As stated in the rules, you will be sent inner tube, that is what you have available as materials to use for the contest in terms of inner tubes.

Alrighty..... We got twenty..... Wow...... In less than twenty four hours......

Good luck !!!!!!

E

All the boxes got shipped this morning except ZZ's .....Must have messed up the address....... Will send it off tomorrow.....
Sorry ZZ, that is what you get dealing with geriatric types....CRS......

Ethan

That just means I'm last in line. Again. :( :D Just like in grade school. Didn't take me more than year 2 in kindergarten to realize I should just go on back and sit in the last row. One of the hazards of a name that starts with the last letter of the alphabet. :D:D

Hey ZZ......

You got to hide in the back....LOL....... I transposed a couple of numbers...... Will have it in the post tomorrow morning.....

Sorry about that.....

E

My package came today! An interesting assortment of sizes for sure. This should be fun!

And thank you for the Beckerheads patch, Mr. Becker!

Official entries for the inner tube extravaganza

Quick and easy way to mount a bk11 (or 14) to a bk2

never leave home without the survival tin

belt mounted quick access to the important stuff – bk14, ferro rod, and streamlight microstream

metal cable holder from the hardware store mounted to the bk2 sheath, and a thin strip of inner tube to keep it nice and secure

dual horizontal mount – small of the back, this requires 1 wide piece to secure the two sheaths together, and then one on either side of that and the belt loop to secure it all to the belt

horizontal cross draw

a little added retention for the older bk11/bk14 sheaths, pops right down when you want to remove the knife

mounted a bk11 to my maxpedition falcon 2 shoulder strap – stays a lot more stable than a paracord wrap

easy way to keep the blade hair popping sharp – attach a DMT credit card diamond stone to the sheath

cook with cast-iron? Slip a small section onto the handle to avoid burning your hands

starting to feel a hotspot? – put a small piece on the affected area and keep swinging

an easy way to always have a becker close at hand

when the bk3 wont fit, a bk11 mounted to the base of the seatbelt makes for a great emergency knife (or any other knife task, just don’t use the bottle opener in the car)

finally – a little extra water resistance to your survival tins - the best part is, if youre having trouble starting the fire, you can use the innertube as a little extra to get things going!

Thanks again for setting this up, its been great fun and a good learning experience already, I cant wait to see what everyone else comes up with. Best of luck to everyone.

Thanks again for the patch!

Adding in a couple more quick ideas that I had while sitting at work today...

A simple key silencer for those of us who don't have a Key-Bar

This one is a simple one that i like to refer to as "Reliable fire", you get a few things all at once with this, the obvious bic lighter and a ferro rod, you get a little backup tinder by using the inner tube and the lighter, and it works as a lock for the lighter, with the tube blocking the lighter button, it cant leak out if accidentally pressed in a pocket or pack, and when you want to use the lighter, you can use this trick:

keeps the lighter lit until you're done, this is exceptionally useful if you need to light something at an odd angle where you would typically burn your finger(s) in the process.

finally, a blade cover for anyone shipping a knife without a sheath. cheap and effective.

Ok, now I'm going to hold off for a little while and let some other people get their ideas posted.

Good luck everyone, lets see those ideas!!!

adding a few more simple ideas now that things have started to pick up

The original intention of this one was going to be used with a Nalgene bottle or 40oz klean kanteen (my favorite) but due to the largest inner tube not fitting, I had to downsize to a smaller metal bottle. - I was able to coil a ton of fishing line around the bottle, then roll the tube over it to keep it in place and dry - i didn't have any available for the pic but there would be no issues fitting in a couple hooks vertically as well. - emergency fishing kit with your water

The inner tube wallet - great for all of the minimalist guys who don't want to carry much

(FAILED ATTEMPT DETAILS) the one failed attempt that I tried was a variant of the waterproof dry bag that someone else posted. I was hoping that you could melt the end shut to seal it instead of rolling but alas - this stuff burns instead of melting, Im thinking about trying to find some adhesive that would work to seal it

I kind of like this one - great way to carry spare batteries and protect the terminals as well

Had a few more failed attempts as well. Tried to make a little water bag similar to someone else's dry bag but instead to store liquids (kind of a long shot) but couldn't get a good enough seal. Ideally it could have been a decent way to carry a bit of Vaseline for on the fly fire starters. - looks like ill be sticking to old film canisters for that

also tried to make ankle wraps - use an extra large piece to go around the end of your pant leg around your boots to help keep anything unwanted out of your pant legs, seems like it should work well with some larger tubes, (dirt bike size maybe?) so ill have to keep this one in mind for non-contest use since the contest materials were too small to fit over my foot haha

Had some free time this morning so i decided to break out the box of inner tube and see what else i could come up with - fairly happy with the results

this one seems fairly obvious, though it does work well. various size inner tubes work very well to keep 550 cord (or any other cordage) neat and together (this is so messy because that 550 cord had been wrapped around the handle of my bk14 for about 2 years lol

Unfortunately my fiancé isn't around to help me test this one, but in a pinch in the woods it appears that a thin piece could work well as a hair tie (not sure if it would pull hair too much - anyone with long hair feel free to test and let me know lol)

thinking back to the original idea, i wanted to see if i could use just inner tube to fit the contents of an entire survival tin onto a small sheath - turns out i was able to get 90% of it on there - some of the little stuff would have fallen out

so here you can see the contents of what i was able to fit on the sheath of my bk14 - a SAK farmer, ferro rod, the little black square is a cotton ball with vasceline wrapped in electrical tape to keep things clean, and the lighter is wrapped with about 50ft of fishing line, and has a few small hooks as well, all of which is then wrapped up in electrical tape to keep it from going everywhere and uncoiling

This is an idea i had that steps a little away from survival and bushcraft but could be a MAJOR help for people camping. If you're like me, for most car camping trips, at least one person always has a guitar, but rarely do they have a capo for higher tuned songs - with a medium-large piece of inner tube cut nice and thin, i was able to use a ferro rod as a serviceable crossbar of the capo. it is definitely not as perfect as the real thing but it actually worked and played pretty well! I highly recommend trying this for any other guitarists among us

and some close-ups

Very happy to have been in this contest - I've already added some of these ideas as full time usage

Once again big thanks for starting this extravaganza!

Here's what I can stuff into this bk7 sheath,

front side: firesteel rod, smiths knife sharpener, Gerber dime and a small altoids tin for fire starting materials
back side: Remora in original sheath, nite ize firgure 9 paracord tie and about 15 feet of paracord.

All right....going to use this block to submit my entries. I will edit and add here as I get more projects done (unless mods decide it should be handled otherwise).

So, the obligatory handle and sheath wrap, except I used one of the smaller ones on my stripped 14:

Secure straps for Altoids tins:

Also, the smaller tin is an emergency fire kit of sorts (dryer lint for tinder and some waterproof matches). I cut up some tiny pieces of tube and worked it into the dryer lint for "enhanced" tinder:

Here's a video, testing the enhanced tinder with a standard stick lighter (what I've always called an "aim n flame"):

Another video of the tinder, this time being lit with a ferro rod:

Increase the versatility of a paracord bracelet by adding ranger bands under which you could tuck various other items for on person carry (small fishing kit, snare wire, clip on compass).

Run a velcro belt keeper through a larger ranger band on a sheath as another alternative for securing to molle webbing.

Bladeforums only allows three videos in a post so check out post #46 in this thread for details on my bamboo slingshot!

Because sometimes you need some good music to keep your spirits up:

Also, not part of my entry. Just wanted Mr. Becker to know the patch found a good home. [emoji3]

OK here is what I have, Sorry for the poor quality of the photos.
A small knife sharpener using the inner tube to hold different grits of sand paper.
And hold the paper on the block when in use.

So say you are out bow hunting and loose a flight or three. I used some inner tube and adhesive
to replace these. Looks like crap & not sure how long they will last but worked well for one shot.

Next we have a very small dry bag, Good for keeping an emergency fire kit safe. I used rubber cement to glue one end shut. It should be a little longer so the opening can be folded close more then twice.
Some bright duct tape should be used to help seal it and make it easier to find.

Sometimes when trapping it is best to catch your game without killing it. Then it will not rot before you can get to it.
Here I used some cut bands tied together to set the snare quickly without a lot of force.

Finally for now at least, I made a bungee lanyard for my 2 / 10 (whatever they are the same)
So when that heavy steel flies out of little hands because of the overly slick handles
it will fly right back at me

Snark
I gave a few more ideas a try
Cutting the band into one long thin strip
MLR6YCIDTxw8v_7gnUJwPQj42cWRZV9pkx5iXrrl95w=w921-h614-no

I got one thin strip about 12' long from a band about 5"
7Lf7D_SccJqfZN6SnNM3TL-0DtBlz0x637_ZKL8Aj6E=w921-h614-no

I braded that into a piece about 3.5' long
dsBvNbx_w1nNJKdJnJUyel9hbT3WKHyr3ld4GdC20I8=w921-h614-no

It is useful for tying / lashing. it will grip itself so a simple hitch will hold tight.
My idea that failed was to use it for a bow drill. Using a cedar hearth & yucca for the spindle ,I thought yucca would be the best choice because it works even for a hand drill. I gave it a shot but could not put much force on it before it would stretch then the band broke. All I got was some heat.
I might revisit this idea latter.
I did use some of the thin strips to make a fishing lure.
qCKkjg3fexuXKbt9UQVn0mne1hf9AjTTROmFUnMgSDk=w921-h614-no

Also a silencer to my bow

I give you the inner tube toggle bungee ( ITTB )

The inner tube made putting the tripod together very quick & easy.

I have some more idea, some of them require longer tubes.
This is fun, Thanks for the contest Ethan.

Been so busy, only have this so far but I'm off all next week and will be at the Outer Banks. So, as not to become shark bait, I'll have some free time to play with the tubes.

The handle tube was really tough to get on. This was the smallest one because I wanted a tight fit at the front so it turned out really nice IMO. I'm liking this set up so it will be permenant, not just for this contest.

Protection for or from cuts and abrasions...
Or for extra grip.

Even as direct pressure for some of you sausage finger fellas. These are easily put on and removed...
Can act as a makeshift splint. Some straight sticks can be inserted if needed.

Time to get this started. Got some other ideas (no, I'm not tellin') that I'll add later when I have a little time and it's stopped raining.

Thanks to psyop for this idea (long time ago!) - who needs their fancy watch strap flapping around? Only wish I'd received this box before I ordered the new strap from Timex after the two original retainers snapped on my old strap.

My Sven saw has a little foam wedge I made to keep it from rattling on my pack, but the damn thin is always falling out. This is a mod I will keep, as it also adds a little ranger band tinder ICE.

I'm not sure what this is, but I like the looks of it...;)

With a second band, it becomes a fizz retainer - an absolute necessity in a life or death sitch:

Actually, my first thought was: with a flexible bottle, you'd have a sort of bellows for fire making, also a "straw" that could be filled with media (moss, sand and the like) for water filtering purposes. Maybe.

Makeshift multi-tool sheath:

19566992491_3411bfec05_b.jpg

That also turns your tool into - voilà - vise grips! Or a third hand (not as handy as the third leg, IMO....but close):

That's it for now - but I ain't done. I'll add the rest to this post....
I am seeing a lot of really great ideas so far - which I've chosen not to duplicate, cause it's kinda forcing me to think a little more - and I thank Ethan again for sending me the box-o-rubber and the rest of you for your seeds of imagination.
