My EDC needed fixing so, I did a write up on it but here's a couple pics, it has a tops whistle, spacepen, firesteel, inova xs torch, wingman, 1ft jute twine, 1" straw with dryer lint with Vaseline and bk11

Button popped off my maglite in the truck, I couldn't find the button and couldn't push the piece that was left easily so... and now it works again
IMG_20150715_075614390_zpsddd10gvz.jpg

Which got me to thinking about a craftsman right angle drill that the button broke on, doesn't work on this as well I guess becuase its pointier but its working again maybe if i can fold some innertube in between It would work better

Just showing off the patch and the bk11 that rides in the concealed carry of the moab 6, those aren't from Ethan, I have them for in case of emergency I can stuff a light, button compass and a few other small things I may want to bring with me if I had to leave the bag sort of thing

Here are a couple i thought up

Add retention to an cold steel sheath

Keep some tent stakes together in your bag

Cover for a ferro rod

Keep fuel from evaporating

And my personal favorite, an over strike guard/ added grip for my axe

Great ideas on here.

Took a couple of thin pieces to attach my long ceramic rod to the sheath of my 4.

Time for my entry. Got some more ideas, but limited time... I hope to get them crammed in this post as well before the due date (which is when, by the way?)

The box with the goodies...

First, I was inspired by my hobby (which is palaeontology) and the problems I come across with that. Mostly, I keep my hammer, chisels and the like inside of my backpack, which makes it very clumsy. I've always said I should buy a carpenters belt, but this solution works too, sort of... (you'll see).

Cut two o-rings:

Attach it to the side of the backpack (I used staples to do this, which isn't very effective and wouldn't last 5 minutes, but it's merely to demonstrate the point):

Chisel and hammer attached!

Adding grip to the chisel, quite obvious. Could be applied to Becker handles as well, as has been seen before ITT:

I use these little plastic containers (that used to contain chewing gum) to put little fossils in. Even though they close pretty well, there's always this little chance that they'll open up. Sealing it off with a piece of inner tube solves that. Extra water tightness as well.

My gloves (I always use bike gloves, so I can still have the precision of using my bare fingers when picking up small stuff) endure a lot of hardship (pick-axing, shovelling, hammering, screening/sieving,...) so they get worn through pretty quckly. Emergency patch up, works great:

Anyway, on to some basics... Waterproofing a zippo, prolonging the vapour as well. Added some more so it sits and stays better in the pocket (added grip).

Adding extras to the sheath. There's a worksharp, flaslight, zippo, ferro rod,...

Added two rings to my little streamlight. Whenever you put it down, it's not the metal touching the surface so it won't get scratched up as fast. For those who think that's worth something:)

You could of course use your inner tube extras to light a small fire.

It works. And smells.

You could add it to one of these army pans/pots/mess tin. It adds some grip to it, and at least it allows you to handle the tin without burning your fingers.

So then, I decided to make something really stupid. I wanted to make a slingshot, and see where inner tube alone would get me. Couldn't immediately find a forked branch, so I split and wedged one. Used inner tube to stop it from splitting any further, and made both the rubbers as well as the patch from inner tube. Oh, there's LOTS of staples. Yes, you may laugh. It was a miserable idea and it failed miserably. Inner tube is a bad rubber, it doesn't nearly stretch far enough in order to add some punch to it. Oh yes, and the staples. Oh God, the staples :thumbdn:

Anyway, I set off to get a forked branch anyway, and found some in a nearby Hazel.

Stripping the bark with the 16.

Found another one. Used a Bahco pocket saw and the 16 to get 'em both stripped and to size.

New patch, leather would be better but inner tube works. The previous failure on top.

Attached with actual bands.

It packs some punch, and the rocks I shoot with it fly some 30 metres, but it's not yet strong enough to go through thick cardboard.

So that was that! I already learned a lot and as I said, I might add some more stuff in the future.

Cheers!

Continued entry for Semper Praesidio from post #35 (Bladeforums only allows 3 videos in a single post).

So, I wanted to do a take on a slingshot using a section of bamboo from the stand in my back yard. I cut a piece down to length and then used the point of my BK16 to drill holes on opposite sides of the tube.

I then cut 3 strips approximately the same width off one of the pieces of inner tube. I know some people who swear by superglue for closing wounds and carry it in their medical kit, so I used superglue to connect them end to end.

I then pushed the ends through the side holes in the cylinder in my bamboo slingshot, like so.

Then I had an "arrow" (it was actually intended to be a bamboo skewer for roasting marshmallows over our firepit) cut. I fed the inner tube back through the bamboo and nocked the arrow in the tube.

Now, after G-sharks experience with the slingshot, I expected this to flop. But my test shot had enough power to puncture the screen of our porch and the arrow stick in it! I didn't even put the tightest draw on it that I could.

So, I moved on to the next step. The first shot hit the overgrown bamboo and sailed to the right (please pardon the condition of my yard - planning to mow, trim things on Saturday). But the next two shots were fairly straight and I think with practice, it could be fairly accurate. Like I mention in the third video below - I wouldn't want to try to take down a buck with it. But I think small game at the right distance and with a little more attention given to the arrow COULD be a possibility.

And here are the videos of it in action!

Thanks for the box of rubbers Ethan! This has been a fun challenge as well as a fun one to see what other uses Beckerheads have come up with for their inner tubes. I've been looking for an excuse to play with ranger bands so I was excited to get in on this one and to see what I could conjure up. There were a few I tried that were already posted like using an inner tube as a public safety Becker grip or as a Zippo seal, but I figured I would only share a few of the other uses I found for them.

Here is the one I slipped onto my Necker sheath:

Wait, one or two bands?

Just one, but it has been cut up a bit...

It worked as a quick and dirty molle attachment. To make it better, I would punch holes in the corners and try to make my cuts in between the holes cleaner. One of my corners was wanting to tear just a bit at first.

After seeing how Survivormind used paracord on his BK5 sheath to tie the belt loop down, I thought that would be a great way to carry my 9, 10 or patrolmachax a bit higher on my belt. My stock BK10 sheath is MIA, so I grabbed a BK9 sheath to test my theory.

I like how it carries. I definitely need to give it a try next time I am out and about.

For some more EDC and organizational related duties, the bands helped tame my charging cable and keep my stove together.

My absolute favorite contraption shows the lighter side of the Remora.

IMG_20150725_103659131_zpsjqny2ebu.jpg

I generally have a Remora and a lighter.... Why not have a Remora AND a lighter?

This little lighter Remora has became a fun and handy little piece of kit.

Hey.......

We got a lot of damned good ideas out of each other........ There is a LOT of creativity here and several ideas that I will incorporate into my gear and habits..... Sooooo thank you!!!......

First a few shout outs and done goods.......

Dresnor... The ring of fire is cool and the clothes pin is very clever....

LG&M ........ The tarp tensioner and sanding block retainer idea are inspired.....

The Mad Indian..... Love the axe handle saver...I am gonna double or triple up on mine.......

And ........

Cody...... your Bic safety/always on doohickey is gonna save me a lot of pain for a long time which makes you the winner........

A great showing by everybody...... It looks like everyone had fun and stretched the brain a bit which is always good.... Thank you all for being a part of this......

The motorcycle shop is on my list next.......

Ethan......

P.s...... I am not sure what will get sent out..... Gotta figure out what is in stock......... Will announce on Wednesday ......tomorrow will be lost to a damned colonoscopy ..... E

Congrats, Cody! Both for winning and for not having to get a colonoscopy! Mr. Becker, I hope that procedure goes ... smoothly.;)

Congrats!

I've never had a colonoscopy... but can't imagine that they're all that fun. That, and I've spent more days at a hospital than I have in my life recently, so I don't really feel like going back to inquire if I need one :p.

This was a very interesting contest, everyone had awesome ideas :).

Well its official... that just made my night!

Mr. Becker - thank you for not only starting this contest, but also selecting me as the winner! I hope the lighter trick serves you well, its actually made it into my EDC.

Whatever the prize is I'm very excited to see what it is, and rest assured, pics will definitely be soon to follow.

Best of luck tomorrow - hopefully all goes well.

Cody congrats well done.
Ethan. Good luck with thecolonoscopy and thanks for the fun.

Congrats, Cody!
Great thread, everyone; lots of really good ideas. Funny, Cody - there's actually a little waterproofer/lever holder that's commercially available now - for $14.95, which is at least 10000 times more money than yours.

And Ethan - good luck tomorrow. You aren't kidding about "losing a day"....plus the day before prep regimen...argh. My first one was 2 years ago and it turned a herniated L4-L5 disc into a ruptured disc.

Congratz Cody! This was a fun exercise and I learned a lot from the other contestants. Maybe the idea thread can remain open with regards to future inner tube ideas? I'd sure love to contribute if I'd come up with other things.

Thanks Ethan for hosting the contest, they're always a lotta fun.

Congrats Cody!

Thanks for the contest, Ethan - and hope everything went well.

I found a sabre ground Sixteen that needs a new home....... So that is the prize..... Will get it out tomorrow or Friday .......

Once again, you all made me proud to know you...... Thank you once again for sharing all the great ideas.......

Ethan

Thanks for the kind wishes......Monday's procedure went smoothly..... The GI Doc and the staff at the hospital were really nice and competent.. Groggy as hell Monday and yesterday was like a severe hangover without the headache.... No gumption ... Not fun, but all is well that ends well.... The "prep" is the worst part, as others have noted..... The drugs are very effective ...No memories....Yay!!!......

Wow that is awesome! That is definitely one of the coolest prizes you could have picked! I cannot thank you enough for your generosity here! The sabre 16 is one knife that I've been looking for for a while but had my doubts that I would find one.

In regards to the procedure - glad to hear everything went well for you.
