Integrals

Here's one I made last year. Lots of respect for makers that do them all the time :)

Here is a lopsided integral I did a couple of years ago.

Guys, Stumbled on this thread and though it's been going for a while, I have a name for you. James Gibson, a JS from the Pidgeon Forge, TN area (he may even be testing for MS this year) makes a lot of forged integrals. In fact he is the person that got me interrested in making them.

I've now made 4 or 5, but this was my first one:

http://www.burtfoster.com/hunters/hunter_15.htm

I've really gotten to like making them, since they are different and require a totally different approach to design than a bar stock knife.

Burt - this one is lovely! I like your stuff generally and this one is on par with the rest. We met at the Reno show - I was the guy with the French accent standing at the door from early on, and I bought Don Fogg's sword.

Edited: wanted to open a new thread but had this thread opened and posted a reply insted . But as it fit's (although the knife is not up the rest of the ones displayed) I just leave it here too :D.

Finished the little integral fighter today. Grinding and finishing the little scales was quite a pita but I think the result came out ok.

Here's a pic of the blade in progress and one of the finished knife and australian burlwood stand:

The quality of the pics is not the best, I'm still trying to improve, the damascus seems to be dirty and washed out but that's just the pics.

For the burl stand I utilized my mill and tried some "fancy" rounded transition from the base to the actual stand on top. I thought this would make a nice gift for the customer so he can put it on his desk. I did that before for Dudleys and other customers dwarfs but they were not as fancy as this one.

I left the mammoth scales a bit thicker than my "mind-for visual-appeal" wanted me to make them, so the customer has a good and full grip on his new letter opener (reminded me of the frign' huge bumble bee that visited my shop today and gave me the shock of my lifetime when she suddenly flew by while I was grinding away :D) .

Looking forward to your comments.

Best regards,
Marcus

Really like the integrals posted in this thread! I've always admired the integrals and managed to acquire two. Not as fancy but are still functional. Top knife by Ken Largin in M-2; bottom knife is Ron Leuschen's 'Survivor' in forged O-1.

Clyde, I have never considered knives like the top one to be integrals. To me they are just full tang knives with small handle slabs. Having one of Ron's integrals myself, I have an appreciation for your Little Hen integral. Too bad Ron seems to have disappeared from the knifemaking world.

I can see what you mean, Keith. That one was my first attempt at having a knife made where I knew the blade, guard & handle would never weaken or separate. Ron loves the knifemaking life, especially working with O-1, but I think he needed a more stable paycheck coming in. I hope we hear from him again!

I can't believe they let that hack Foster post a pic of one of his "knives" on this thread!

MuHuHaHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Burt said he's only made 4 or 5, but the two of his that I've actually seen and held, were two of my favorites by anyone.

A forged integral is a funny thing, because laying in a 2D photo, they often seem so simple. The can indeed be a royal pain to clean up, and finish. There are many aspects that if done correctly, just add to the flow and simple elegance. If done wrong, they GLARE you in the eye like staring at the SUN!!! Okay, that was overly dramatic.

One of my JS knives is an integral bowie/dirk.

I've got an integral damascus hunter on the bench that's about three hours from completion... but that's 3 hours I don't really have to "play" with right now.

Thanks for posting that Burt... it's one of my favorite knives, period.

I'd like to see super sophisticated integrals. I think a top level bladesmith could even do a D-guard integral. That would be a major challenge...

Can I have it? ;) ;) ;) :D

Joss, while not forged, I have seen pics of an integral D-guard by Wolfgang Loerchner... it was an extremely humbling and beautiful piece.

I have seen some integral knives made by Jerry Jean and Mike Leach, Jean's version were very technicals (sophisticated ?) with his 'tongue and groove 'method , Leach knive were massive . None , I believe, were forged.

Kit, Jason: Boy they are fine!

Marcus: That little mini is outstanding! Thank you for posting that, and congrats on such fine work!

Burt's small hunter has everything I like about an integral. Simplicity displayed and complexity hidden.

Nick, Is there anything that Wolfe can't humble all of us with? Wow. Looking forward to seeing your project too.

Cool thread.

Ya know what would make it cooler? A pic of that big awesome Tai Goo integral of yours - that's what. Pretty please? :)

Roger

Tai Goo made this for me in 2004. You may read more about it here. 'Simply' wonderful. :D

It wouldn't be fair to not post my two other favorites in this style, made by Hill Pearce. All are semi-integrals.

Thanks for asking, Roger. As in all of knifemaking--the sky is the limit.

Indeed !!!

Coop, That Pearce Medeteranean Bowie Is both an all time favorite
of mine, and a powerful inspiration.

If ever a book is written on the history of knifemaking in America,
THAT piece belongs on the front cover.
