Introduction and a WIP

A beautiful knife and, knowing the amount of exceptional work put into it, a heirloom quality piece any collector would be thrilled to own! :)

Thanks again for an incredible WIP.

Thanks everyone, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out:D

Still lots of room for improvement, though. Just so you know that I'm not oblivious to all the flaws in my work, I'll try to list the most apparent ones.

-The handle has a couple of natural voids or something, the most obvious one can be seen near the pin on the finished photo.
-The grind could have been higher.
-The heel/dropped edge would look nicer if it was curved instead of square.
-The handle wood is a bit softer than would be ideal.
-The blade finish can always be better. I think an 800 grit finish might look nicer.
-The grinds aren't as crisp as they could be. Things got somewhat washed out with the hand sanding.
-The guard fit is good, but not perfect.
-The design, while I think it looks nice, is a bit boring.

Having said all that, It's a nice knife, and I learned a lot by making it.

Thanks again for all the encouragement, and remember, I still have hundreds of photos left over, so if there's anything you'd like to see more of just let me know.

Great WIP Will. Thanks for sharing mate. Have you thought about joining the Australian Knife Makers Guild?

Thanks, Matt.
Yes, I am interested in joining the Australian Knife Makers Guild. I'll have to start working on some knives to submit:thumbup:.

Thank you for taking the time to photograph, post and write your process for us - i have learned a great deal and I hope that with practice (and a bucket load more patience) to make something as beautiful!

What a great WIP. Thanks so much for taking the time to show us through all the steps. I'll be saving it for future reference.

Garry

Cheers, guys.

I hope to make another, less in depth, WiP soon. Just gotta get a few shop upgrades sorted and then I can begin.

this was a fantastic WiP thread, thank you so much for sharing it.
The end result is a very clean and deadly looking knife. Nice job :)

G'day Will
Great WIP, really well done. Good looking knife, hard self critic you just did there, with that kind of self examination you will move ahead quickly in knife making. Voids are almost inevitable in wood, if they are small enough you can sand with say 600 paper and push the really fine dust into the void, this way the colour matches. Hit with super thin super glue, standard will just sit on top, it needs to wick in. Re-sand and void is gone. This is only good for non structural minor voids. Hope to see you at a show sometime.

Cheers
Shawn

Thanks, guys.

Lorien, it was the WiP thread that you and Mr Wheeler put together that gave me the idea to make this one, so thanks for the inspiration

Shawn, thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind for my next wooden handle. I hope to attend a show soon.

Will,

It was great meeting you yesterday, I really enjoyed our chat. Lets keep in touch and if make it to Canada I would gladly host you.

Everyone,

I have handled this knife and let me tell you all, the fit and finish is great. Well designed and executed, as well as super clean. Very well done knife and WIP

James

Thank you, James.

You gave me a lot of really useful advice, and fascinating insight into the wider knifemaking community.
