I find myself needing a tablet more and more.

I already have the Kindle Fire, and it doesn't meet my web or business app needs.

What would you recommend, and why?

I played around with a Galaxy Tab 10.1, and found it too large for what I'd want it for (ebooks, games, movies, etc). It's too large and heavy to use with one hand, and even with 2 hands, you'll need to put it down on something or lean it on your lap with your knees up or something, because the weight will tire and fatigue your arms. YMMV. I think it's pretty lame that it uses a proprietary charging port, and not the standard micro USB that everything else uses these days (except Apple products).

If you can live without expandable storage and a rear facing camera, and don't need 4G/3G connectivity, it's really hard to beat the Nexus 7 for features and price. For $200 (8gb model, $250 for 16gb) you get a 1.3ghz quad core processor with the best graphics processing out there. It comes with Android 4.1 Jellybean, and since it's a Google product, support and updates will come quickly. If you need internet but aren't around a wi-fi hotspot, you can always turn your smartphone into a mobile hotspot (DO NOT get this service through your provider, you can buy an app like PdaNet with a one-time charge that's less than your carrier's monthly fee). It also has phenomenal battery life.

The new Kindle Fires are cool, but I don't think your app selection will be any better than your current Kindle unless you hack/root it, which I don't think anybody has done yet.

The iPad 3 is cool of course, and has the best screen on any tablet, but it costs twice as much as a Nexus 7 for the same 16gb capacity (and another $100 for each jump).

phonearena.com is where I go for news and reviews. They do great video reviews that go way beyond just outlying specs and features.

I have always been a fan of apple iOS products but the new Microsoft Surface tablet strikes me as very interesting. Some people need and want that windows experience and I think the pro version offers a fully functional desktop-like interface.

A friend of mine bought a refurb Barnes & Noble Nook and stuck in some aftermarket chip to make it an android tablet. He thinks it's great. Try googling it if you're interested.

I can only offer a fairly uninformed opinion, but what the heck. Everyone I know that uses a tablet uses the iPad. They all rave about it. It seems to have millions of apps and unless there is some specialized program that you need that is available on another platform, you can be sure if an app exists, it exists for the iPad.

It seems pretty expensive, but if it works, and you use it every day, that few hundred dollars isn't going to make that much of a difference.

If you know a lot about technology, you might be able to find something for less that works just as well\bettter for you, but if you get the iPad, you won't regret it.

First of all let me say I'm a bit of a android fan boy. But I own a ipad. So far I haven't played with a android tablet as smooth as the ipad. From opening apps or just flipping through screens.

I'm the kind of person who when it comes to technology will try to get the (reasonably) best tool for the job. Cowon MP3 players, Samsung phones, Thinkpad laptops, Playstation 3 etc. I went for the iPad 2 over every other similar device back then and from what I can tell would go for the iPad 3 over any similar device today.

Some day other manufacturers will have caught up with Apple and will eventually overtake them when it comes to tablets - just like what happened with MP3 players and smart phones. but that day hasn't come yet.

If you like to customize and fool with your electronic go Galaxy. There are many custom ROMs out there and you can definitely have it your way. Also you have a choice of size from 5 inch up to the 10.1. If you do not like to mess with things go with the iPad. It is fine out of the box and not very customizable. Also if cost is a factor the scale would lean towards Android devices.

iPad.

Tried other tablets, and they are all inferior to the iPad.

The various Android based tablets I tried had counter intuitive interfaces, and crashed constantly.

The devices themselves were clunky and unrefined.

I also hate how each manufacturer has their own version of the Android OS; zero standardization across devices.

The company I work for recently authorized the use of Android devices, and it's been a nightmare due to this problem.

I see...that's the reason I root mine and run a custom ROM...not for the faint of heart...but it gets me the tablet and screen I want with the software (android) I want also. Customization is the name of that game. For those wanting simplicity...Apple is the way to go.

I agree. For people who want to customize everything and tinker, Android may be a better choice.

iPads are pretty easy to jailbreak now, so that opens up a few options.

I've owned an ipad 2 since it came out. The app options are really nice as well as basic tablet duties. Internet surfing, mail and music. The only negative would be that it can't play flash type media. If you surf websites that use Adobe flash then your out of luck. A minor inconveinence to me as I don't frequent those websites. Overall, I'd recommend the ipad.

I got an ipad2 for Christmas this year and so far I have been very happy with it. I already used an iphone so I was used to the OS a little bit. I have played with android phones but not android tablets so I don't have a full basis for comparison.

The ipad to me seems very nice. The hardware is especially nice and the software works pretty well too. The battery lasts a long time during use. I mostly use mine for checking email, browsing the net and checking ebay. I also read a few PDF's on it, but not much gaming and no music. I think it would work well for streaming netflix if I needed to do that.

I am not an apple fan, if anything I'm more anti-apple but I do like some of their hardware that is much nicer than other brands such as the smaller ipods and the iphone. My complaint against other brands is that their OS is all a bit different and they don't standardize completely. And there is less continuity from model to model. For instance I had a Samsung smartphone and it was crap. Some of the features had been intentionally disabled. There was no support for my model, by the time I bought it and needed support they had already started selling a newer model and forgotten about mine. If the newer model had problems then by the time users figured that out the company would have moved on to the next model after that. At least with apple you know that all of the features will work like intended and when you buy the next model it will work the same way too.

I have tried to use itunes software and find that it is as bad as everything else from apple is good. Fortunately I don't really need to connect my ipad to my computer. I put my pdf's and photos on dropbox and download them to my ipad that way.

In my mind the ipad vs. android could be somewhat like saying Hinderer vs. ZT vs. Kershaw Blur. The Blur is a very nice knife and 1/10 the cost of the Hinderer. The ZT is a nice knife at 1/3 the cost of the Hinderer. I don't doubt that the Hinderer is a better knife, but for the big increase in price it is not really that much better. Of course "better" is in the eye of the beholder. When I bought my ipod years ago I was willing to spend twice as much for it as another good brand because it was just nicer hardware. Same with the ipad, I would be willing to spend more for it than an android. If the price difference means more to a person then they might prefer to buy the cheaper brand and live with the slight differences.

FWIW the DOD has specified Andriod as the OS of choice for small PC.

I bought a kindle fire b/c of the lower price. after a while it was not accommodating to my needs. I eventually saved up the cash for an iPad (New iPad). It has almost replaced my laptop. I gave the kindle to my brother b/c he wanted a tablet. Later he also bit the bullet and bought an iPad. I have since used several tablets and they all work fine as long as you know their limitations. If you don't want to spend the money get a Nexus 7, it works very well. But I would highly recommend an iPad, since it has the most app support and if you ever want to sell it, it will have a higher resale value.

Thanks, everyone.

I like the Galaxy Tab, after messing around with one, and I like the fact you can get some productivity apps for free from the Play store. My phone is a Galaxy S III, and it is the first Samsung phone I've had that I didn't want to frisbee across the room. It works great.

However, I hear the the iPad is better for taking notes, reading PDF's, and some office tasks. Will it run QuickOffice? I need that functionality. I also need dropbox. I also need the ability to access a few secure websites with secure login. My phone can access all but one of them, so I need to access all without any difficulty.

The Nexus 7 doesn't have the ability to accept SD cards, otherwise it might work perfectly.

I don't necessarily need to watch movies or play games; that would be scondary to business applications, and book reading.

Any other comments?
