Iron bolsters?

If you look at the old catalogs (1880s to early 1900s) you will see that many patterns were offered with both iron and NS bolsters, with iron costing less. Here are some of my examples:

Queen

HSB

Globe

Ulster

Ulster

Southington

Valley Forge

A big 4 1/2" Sheffield England only marked jack. Arrayed throughout with that "metal" ,and having proud pivot pins in the rat's tail? . Nice old bone on the covers.

I gotta say (despite having no previous knowledge of iron bolsters) that the patina on those bolsters can look just as cool as it does on the carbon steel blades. What a fascinating and attractive aspect of our hobby.

Nice knife and picture Primble  If you used the punches and chisel once in a while they might get some character!:barf::D

We will never know, I'd say, Rob. I just thank heaven that the previous owner loved the patina, or alternately, did not own a buffing wheel!! Phew!!:)

Those Low-Carbon Steel Bolsters would never be the same again!!

Nor would the Higher-Carbon Steel Blades!! Nor the Medium-Carbon Steel pins!!!!!

Well, I have to go Iron a carboniferous [mostly (C6-H10-O5)n] shirt for tomorrow!!
Good night all!!

:D:D:D:D
Good thing everyone has a sense of humor around here!!:):)

Very hard to find the old IB knives with great patina intact on the bolsters and also with full blades, intact handles, etc. I love it when I do.

Carboniferous shirt !!! :eek::confused::confused::confused::D

OMG Primble that there is one beautiful and unique knife - I love everything about that one! NICE

Thank you Jeff - Lyle taught me to really appreciate the Farmer's Jack - and this one had quite the story, concerning it's journey to me. :)

If I had some pins and such, I might use them more. I am looking for the "right" knife to take apart for my first try at handle replacement.

I would have thought that a few of my friends would let me know where to get that stuff, by now!

When I do - I won't show it till I do it right, would not want to take the grief that comes with the Primble nick-name !!!:D:D:D

Poor ole Primble - Duncan and Mark have nearly broken his back from riding him so hard - becoming an ole sway-back. :o

Maybe I need iron/steel/or Carboniferous bolsters like my Primble Barlow.

Nice old knives throughout this thread. I think it is cool that the cutlery industry has returned to a notable use of bolster material similar to the ancient ones!

Did you know that your cotton shirt may contain over 20% carbon??
