Is a 120 dollars too much for this knife?

Was also eyeing that blade- like the lines and simplicity, found it for $114- seems too steep, but then I saw that the cutting edge is 3.25" and it's .275" thick... Will wait for reviews and a price drop or tag it along another purchase and get free shipping. Would have liked it in VG10, but then again it wouldn't be "Made in China".

Its insanely thick (7mm) FFG (thats a lot of machining) slab of Aus-8 with real nice Vox'd handles + kydex pants with a teklock.

Whats the issue with the price?

China does not always mean cheap, look at the epicenter for example. I wish the stereotypes would end.

the purpose of making a knife in china is to lower the cost. i know its a beefy blade but i still think its too much cash.

just my opinion.

Hello, new guy here. I've been lurking around these forums and picking up every knife in every store I could get my hands on, looking for my first ultimate EDC blade. I say first because I can already feel myself becoming a knife junkie. Anyway...

This knife has spoken to me more than any other I've come across. It just looks... mighty. Mighty is the best way I can describe it. I've had plenty of cheap, thin, folders over the years so I have been searching for a nice, thick, fixed blade that could work as an EDC. Weight isn't as big a concern to me as size, and this Boker Vox Bob is both compact and weighty. It's also stainless which was something I wanted.

I was going to pull the trigger on this knife but all the negative responses in this thread made me stop. I'm hoping someone could help me with my newb questions. It would be much appreciated. Here goes...

- AUS8 looks like a good steel to me. Stainless is a plus. It can get super sharp, that's a plus. It is tough for a stainless steel, right? All big pluses. Add in the fact that this little blade is 7mm thick... I just don't see a downside to it, but then again I'm a newb. So, what am I missing?

- If there is a custom made knife of similar size and price I'd be all for it, but I haven't found one on the internet. I'd prefer to buy American if possible, but if the item I'm looking for is made elsewhere and not in the US, I'll still buy it. Is there something comparable made in the US?

Honestly I really liked that knife for its overall shape and compactness ever since I saw it some months ago. It really did fit the role of a BOB knife.

And yes, the price though makes you say "ouchie".

Here's the proto version, not exactly the same as the production though.

People are steel snobs and like next gen super steels because they can keep an edge/baton through steel tubing better than previous "regular" steels.

Ignore them. Heat treatment > Steel.

For the price? No.

If you want a stout fix blade you can get a BK-2 however the Boker BoB has a lot of belly (wide blade) WITH a full flat ground which enables it to be an acceptable slicer regardless of its thickness while not being a boat anchor. ;)

Buy any knife you want as long as its from a reputable manufacture and which has no history of catastrophic failures. In due time you will learn what you like and dislike. ;)

Ignore people complaining about aus-8 and the price for a lowly china made knife. There is nothing wrong with the price taking into account the machining involved, what you get with it, who designed it and the company that stands behind it.

This Bark River PSK is less than $100, and it's American made with a hand finished convex grind.

I picked up this custom for $90 on the for sale forum here. Canadian made with CPM154 and ale colored G10. Mmm, beer.

I'm sure that Boker is a decent knife, but I would not spend $120 on AUS8 made in China. The fact that it's 7mm thick also makes me dislike it, as it's such a short blade it will make for an abismal slicer. If you need a pry bar, you can find a decent pry bar for much less. I've used SOG's AUS8 and was not too impressed. It sharpens easily, but became dull very quickly under regular use. It's not exceptionally tough or stainless; pretty average throughout. I prefer Buck's 420HC over it. Cheaper, made in America, and similar performance. In fact, I've put my 6mm thick Buck Nighthawk through hell for the past decade and have nothing but good to say. That's a 6.5" US made fixed blade that's about half the price of that Boker.

Absolutely. You could get a custom-made knife, with better steel, for cheaper than that. I know Snody has some small fixed blades for sale for about that much.

Thanks for the advice for and against this knife. It got me to take a look at a lot of knives I didn't know about. In the end I just liked the looks of the Boker Vox Bob too much to pass it up. I'm not disappointed in my final decision at all. It looks better in person than online. This knife is just amazing in the hand. It's both massive and compact at the same time, if that makes any sense. Between the size, shape and overall feel of the handle it is a supreme carving knife. It also has a very wide, full flat grind blade, and it came sharp as a razor out of the box. I haven't used it for food prep yet but I can tell it will work well in that regard. Extra bonus for being stainless. It's also just beautiful, a real work of art imho. I'm hyping the Boker Vox Bob up a lot here but I can't help it. I'm in love :)

I did look at several thick blade knives including the ESEE-5 and the BK2. Both of which I liked very much. The Boker Vox Bob just feels more solid and tank like than either of those.

Anyway, thanks again for the input.

Good for you then on your decision, which was informed and weighed.

We'd appreciate pics and and review if you can spare it sometime.

All those commenting the could get something similar for less money, I'd like to see it.

I don't think you're going to find a 7(!!!!)mm thick blade with sculpted G-10 handles and a matching Kydex sheath anywhere in any kind of steel for the same price. You disagree? Name ONE. Snody's been mentioned but his knife for that price has no handle scales, is thinner and is chisel ground. The Becker although fun is nowhere the same as this knife.

If this a lot of money? Offcourse! Is it expensive for what you're getting? Not at all.

People tend to forget that thicker blades simply command much higher prices because both the materials become a lot more expensive and it being thicker takes more work as well.

I don't really buy fixed bladed knives since I make my own but even I would never make a similar knife and sell it for that price....and I din't have very high self esteem when it comes to my own work.

All the comparisons I've seen sonfar are slanted. You want another small fixed blade at that thickness and detail...you're going to have to buy a Busse....and spend a heck of a lot more.

The handle material is actually Canvas Micarta with a red liner, not G-10. The advertising write up on the handle is that it is 3D Machined. I have no idea if that is common or not, but regardless the handle is very well designed and my hand locks into this knife.

I have never done a review or posted pictures on here, maybe I will after I have had the knife for awhile. Right now I can't stop playing with it lol! It's half art work, half tank and I just love it!

Here's a video I found on Youtube for the Boker Vox Bob. This guys seems to really like his as well...

no way, I would only go maybe $50 max for an aus8 and that is if I really like it. many other great choices. check out the izula 2

I did check out the IZULA 2, and just about every other knife made by ESEE. I'm sorry but the IZULA 2, as nice as it is, just isn't in the same class as this knife. I was ready to pull the trigger on an ESEE-5. I didn't feel the ESEE-5 was as nice as the Boker Vox Bob, and the IZULA 2 wasn't really even in the same ballpark.

For a bit more, $155 shipped, you can get a CUSTOM MADE knife of a similar style, in 1095 carbon

100_1617.jpg

from TAGannon who is a BF dealer.

Edit: Now I see the OP is a Brit. Shipping to UK? Probably cost you more than $155

That price is ridiculous, even for Boker. It's a nice looking knife, but I'd only pay about half that price for one.

I don't understand your point. For a knife non-effective for chopping, why would one think 1095 is better than a decent stainless steel? I'm sure TAGannon who made that knife (looks sweet) has his own overhead costs to justify his pricing. I have no problems with that, and respect it. But the only merits of 1095 is that it can take quite a beating, nothing more. It rusts very easily, and costs less than most stainless, no doubt Aus-8.

For a knife a little shy of 5/16" thick, I think the Vox Bob seems like a winner. I own several CS knives in Aus-8 and they're all good steel. They may be a fraction of the price, but they're also a fraction of the width. I saw the Vox Bob on NJK for $93. Vox knives are excellent; I already have a Vox Rold and Vox Rhino.
