I think it’s ridiculous they are asking $162 for the standard blue bugout.
I bought a mini bugout last year, and the $150 (I think that’s what a paid) price tag seemed a bit high, but do you wanna know how long that bothered me once it was in my hand?…About 2 seconds. It’s a well made knife and serves a purpose. It’s the perfect knife for those times when I want to carry a lightweight locking folder that disappears in my pocket.

Of the seven BM knives owned or gifted, plus the one lost in the yard - which have all been in service for at least five years - the Barrage, Griptilian and Violi closer to ten - not one has ever had a problem with omega springs or anything else either for that matter. Blade centering doesn't seem to be a problem with mine. Go figure haters. I want to see pictures of all these off centered BM knives with broken omega springs. Left to right: Barrage, Griptilian, Violi.

I’ve had experience with two Benchmade knives and on both the omega springs broke at least twice! I only had the knives for a year. There’s also blade play on both. I don’t think Benchmade knives are worth it.
Ummm...go back and re-read what you just wrote. Two Benchmades with both Omega Springs breaking at least twice? Within a year? I'm not smart but I'm not stupid.

Inconceivable.

I'm don't think you know what it means to break an Omega Spring.

I'm calling #BenchHate on this one. I'd love to hear the timeline on how what you described above can happen.

How dare you sir. I have owned 19 benchmades over the past month and both omega springs have broken at least half a dozen times on each one. I’ve even had a few springs just spontaneously combust on me. One actually attacked me. No joke.

Personally, I've not encountered any problems with my Benchmades. "Worth" is a relative-term. Depends on what you value, and how much your willing to spend. There are two types of people in the knife world: buyers and cryers. Over the years, I've purchased a few blades that seemed pricey. These would be: Al Mar, SOG, ZT, and Cold Steel. But most of them have increased in value, and they've performed as advertised. Watches, and guns are also, analogous to this.

I don’t have an uncentered BM with a broken omega spring.

But I do have a Benchmade Bugout that will not center no matter what I do. Drives me nuts! Haha.
I had a mini grip that had serious bladeplay unless I tightened it enough that it would be off-center.
I have a Mini Pika lockback with up/down play, but still love that knife.
And a Gold Class Torrent that rarely comes out of the box, although that may change soon as it’s a wonderful knife.

I have no photo’s at this time, nor do I appreciate being lumped in with “the haters.” 😜

Benchmades are what they are, have been for years. There current prices are more than I am willing to spend with my track record with them.
There are many other North American brands that I’m happier with. :)

I've had good luck with mine. That said it's been three years or so since I bought one, a 940 that I also like a lot.

You shoulda kept your original post! It made me chuckle. :) All in good fun. :)

You're fast. Beat me to the edit. 🙃

I guess I’ll take the time for an informative? post.

I’ve never had good luck with BM’s with the axis bar staying centered. The ones with the torsion bar assist seem to stay on center.

The Mini Pika as some up/down play, yes, but I’d be nitpicking as that was made before the era where everyone started analyzing every production knife like it should be a perfect specimen of machining brilliance at $80. I have full confidence in that lockback, and have so much confidence I had it engraved.

The Bugout being uncentered drives me bonkers, and I may have gotten a bad one (it happens). Solution = put it in my pocket, took it to work and put it through the paces. It’s held up just fine.

BM’s are decent to good quality knives and when I had to use CS for a pocket clip years back, they shipped me one for free.

I also like thinner handled knives and the Mini Barrage I owned had too thick of scales. The old flipper tab one BM made (can’t remember the name right now) was not their best offering quality-wise and the action wasn’t anything to write home about. Also thick handled.

At this point in my knife collecting/using life, I’d much rather support some newer makers with the $ that BM is wanting for their knives.

I miss my Spyderco Nirvana. Shoulda never sold that. 🤦‍♂️ Yup, that’s right…I mentioned Spyderco in a BM thread. 😂🤣

Thanks for the enjoyable back and forth Boattale Boattale

I must be one of the lucky ones out there, I have had over 20 Benchmades and not one single spring failure. My 581 Barrage had centering issues, but hey, the blade doesn't hit the liners so I don't care. Do I care that they did anything political, nope, not in the least, unfortunately companies have to do things that even they might not want, just to keep in good graces with local jurisdicitions. (pure speculation on my part, as I don't know what their motivations were for destroying guns) Are they overpriced? well that is all relative these days, 99% of everything sold these days is overpriced with no sign of that changing anytime soon.

When asking about value for your money, I think you have to narrow it down to which model knife you are buying, just like cars, one may appeal more to you than to me, and any manufacturer can make a lemon or have quality issues.

The argument of US made vs. China made will never end and everyone should just move on, the argument itself is a no-win. I will say that when Reate, WE, etc. first came on the scene they appeared to be stellar values as they were priced below US manufacturers by a fair margin, but that didn't last long. The models I have looked up all currently, appear to sell for the same or even more. (I am only speaking of the "higher" end knife brands, because just like everthing else in life there are exceptions and apparently several brands from China that do actually offer a good value.)

A bad Omega Spring was the ruin of my first marriage. It also drove me to drink…and worse. Oh, the things I’ve done because of that butterfly. I feel your pain!

Damn you all to hell, Benchmade!

I guess different people have different experiences. I have 5 Benchmades, My Adamas I've had for 9 years. I have never had an Omega spring break. I have never had any blade play on any of them. Whether Benchmade knives are "worth it" depends on how you define :worth".

I've got a baker's dozen of Benchmade knives and there's a few more I'd definitely like to buy. The Griptilian is such a reliable work knife and the Crooked River was what really got me into knife collecting. Now that everyone and their dog can produce knives with Axis lock variants, I would think that at some point their prices might decrease...maybe...possibly. It could happen.

That butterfly tax can be a bit daunting and the recent price increases make me glad I bought as many of them already as I have, because of things like needing money for gas and eating.
