Is Dull, Drab, Ugly and Agressive the New Measure of Beauty?

I see both traditional and 'tactical' knives as very useful. Right now I have a full flat ground G10 Endura in my pocket. It's semi-large and has the OD looking G10 but it's far from being ugly and aggressive. I like the subdued look of it very much. I also love it because it cuts like mad. I have no use for it to be a weapon ever. I also have a Victorinox Farmer and a Case Medium Stockman that frequent my pocket. I like them all equally and use them all.

Different knife for different tasks.

That one was made and delivered to a customer specifically for his Red Stag hunt in New Zealand , upon completion of the hunt , he left it with his guide as a tip. It was a gift knife made just for his trip , I just wanted to find out how it would perform in that environment :)

** One thing we can all agree on , the plural of knife is knives. **
This thread needs some humor , so for your enjoyment...

Mr. Wylie
Did I plural it wrong? If so opss! Is knifes a word? Would it be the knife's sheath? lol... Anyways....

I can't stop drooling over that piece!! I might have to walk/swim and run to New Zealand and get that work of art from the guide!!! The clean lines and rounded soft style just screams comfort!!!! Any chance you want to see how one performs in the great wilderness of Upstate/Central New York?? I'd give an ear and a toe to use and review her!!!

I'm not even sure it has to be "tactical" to be part of this group. I think the OP is also talking about knifes that are more "raw" and "industrial" looking. A knife you might see in the latest SAW movie. Any knife that is made to invoke fear, terror or heighten threat awareness.... This type of knife might be seen a bit more readily as a weapon as apposed to a tool.

how does something that is so beautiful invoke fear, terror etc???

raw metal, industrial design is very beautiful.

I just think as a society we are conditioned to feel a certain way about things. I guess it could be thanks to classical conditioning??? Things that are raw or industrial are often seen as dirty, cold. unfinished and just raw. Framing and duct work are covered because people see them as ugly. Bare steel is painted because people don't like the look of it. We have been conditioned to think these things. Often when people want to invoke fear they will use things that are raw looking. Hatchets, battle axes, wrought iron gates, chain, ect... Take what I say with a grain of salt... Just the musings of a crazy Zombie. And I agree raw metal is beautiful, but not everyone would agree with us. I can find beauty in most things, so it's not often that I associate things with fear.

See this is what this thread SHOULD be about!! Good genuine discussion!!

I used to really like the tactical knives and most are pretty decent knives. I look for something that is more useful than prying and a tacticool look now. Those 1/4" thick knives don't slice to well.

Most Soldiers in Iraq and Afganistan mostly carry the Benchmade or Gerber knives sold at the PX.

Some may want this:

Some ( like me ) would prefer this:

Or this (again me - and one similar is in front of the shop awaiting repair) :

So it is all good , buy what ya like , use what ya like , and don't worry about what anyone else buys or likes...unless you are in it to buy & make a profit , if so , you picked a hard way to make a buck.

^Agreed

BUT...... I for some reason like to read people and understand why people do the things they do. Is there any reason for me to know or want to know? Not really, simply my own kookieness. But like I said a few pages back, this forum and it's members only represents a tiny portion of the market. I'd be willing to bet that we are really an insignificant portion of knife buyers. 8)

i like knives that i can take down and clean with Hoppes #9, like one would a rifle at the end of a good day putting lead downrange.

I would agree to that , when you look at the current numbers here on BF , Members: 149,442, Active Members: 16,155

I would say in the grand scheme of things , we are but a small portion of the buyers , though most of us are buyers of multiple styles , manufactures and makers. Some are collectors , some are users , some are both.

According to knife rights.org , 80% of the pocket knives are one hand openers , which tells me that traditionals ( slip joints , lock backs , etc ) make up the minority. I find that # very interesting.

well one thing is clear ,all of us are really digging knives. do'nt you think we should move on to some other knife areas puddin people.

the old pretty slipjoints served their purpose well and tac knives also work well but, with much less class. the excuse of the tac knives being easier to open is only a good excuse to a certain degree like when urgency is an issue. i honestly am not so lazy that i will complain about how inconvenient it is to stick my hand a little deeper in my pocket for a knife and then have to safely open it with 2 hands(if you even need 2 hands often if the blade sticks up high enough you can open it with one hand). slipjoints were good enough for my dad, grandpa, and great grandpa so they are good enough for me. the only reason i personally would use a tac knife for harder chores is because i would be less heartbroken if it broke than if it were one of my prized slipjoints.

and we need more pictures...just because....

People today really don't use knives, nor do that have to depend on them everyday. If they did you woould see way more of this (shown above) style blade. The camping and military style knives are pretty much worthless to people that spend a lot of time outdoors. The knievs sold today are nothing more than a redesigned Axe or Hawk. Nothing wrong with than I guess, they are fun to play with. I'd just hate to be stuck with one of those camping/military things when I needed a real knife.
